August saw Tottenham Hotspur in the news for all the wrong reasons as West Brom made direct accusations about the London Club unsettling their player and Saints suffering similar problems, but it's ll about to start again.

According to statements from the player in the press, Victor Wanyama wants to put the troubles of August behind him and concentrate on playing for Saints, well for the time being at least.

Wanyama has made his position clear and stated that he is going to concentrate on football and let his agent negotiate with Southampton about a possible extension to his contract, but that is not good enough for some.

Tottenham Hotspur have a certain reputation in football about the way they go about transfers as Saints and West Bromwich Albion found out, so the big question is whether the club described as North London Yobboes 14 years ago by Rupert Lowe after the way they had poached Glenn Hoddle and then made derisory offers for Dean Richards, have finally been the Leopard who has changed their spots or whether we are now going to see another orchestrated campaign in the media.

If we do then perhaps it will not have Spurs behind it, perhaps it will just be some lazy hacks who have something against Saints, certainly there are a few of those about.

So it is worrying to see a story appearing suggesting that Wanyama himself might try to force a move through in January.

The Sun are the originators of the rumour and several other outlets are taking up the story.

The Sun is claiming that Wanyama has snubbed offers from Saints of an extended contract and will renew his attempts to try and engineer a move to Spurs in the January transfer window.

The Sun referring only to "sources" claims that the "source said.

"It’s not in Victor’s interests to sign an extension. He loved working with Mauricio and would still like the move to happen.”

The good news is that there appears to be little substance behind the claim, however it does seem that someone somewhere wants to try and see this move resurrected in January, perhaps it's Tottenham Hotspur, perhaps it's the players agent, perhaps it's even Wanyama himself, we will perhaps soon find out !

From a playing point of view Saints are well equipped should wanyama go sooner than later, they have Romeu & Jordie Clasie signed in the past few months both of whom are holding midfielders and James Ward Prowse is also being touted for this position going forward, of course it would be blow to lose the Kenyan, but it would not be a terminal one.

montecristo added 09:35 - Oct 12 You worry far too much about this kind of thing, and in any event giving such doubtful rumors publicity only adds fuel to a non existant fire.If you let the media know that Southampton is a push over in the transfer market then they will simply prey on you. Its time for the club to show some steel, send these hacks packing by emphtically refusing to discuss transfers unless the club wants to sell.

SonicBoom added 11:42 - Oct 12 In any situation like this the player could kill it all stone dead but they never do. Blaming the press is pointless. Let's face it Wanyama wants out. He probably sees Spurs as more attractive as it's London and they pay more money. I just hope the club refuses to sell until the summer. Letting him go in January is weak unless we get an stupid premium for him.

BoondockSaint added 13:45 - Oct 12 Let Saints just put out a statement that they will no longer deal with Spuds because of their past behavior. End of story. The team that could really use him is Arsenal-they are traditionally weak physically in the center. That would be a London club, Champions League, big money for him and us, and a poke in the eye to Spuds.

pintsizedsaint added 14:25 - Oct 12 Hang on: Somebody (perhaps SFC in backchannel mode) have already communicated (via the Telegraph) that they will not sell to Spurs as they see them as a direct rival - and were annoyed with their approach for Wanyama (and others) previously. I very much doubt Wanyama will go in January - unless Spurs/Arsenal put in a silly offer (and that ain't happening with Spurs - is it!). Spurs are likely to wait until Summer and put a reduced offer on the table: just like with Clyne both player and buying club will know that there is only one year left and Saints would rather get some cash than see Wanyama leave next summer for nothing. It's fairly likely that Wanyama will not sign a contract extension and so Saints will start planning ahead (they've already got Clasie and Romeu - so perhaps Vilhena as a ACM complement to JWP?) As such I think Wanyama will go in the summer - but on our terms and only after we have planned for it. Just like Cedric in the Clyne situation. And it may not be to Spurs though! In fact, i'm sure it will be anybody but Spurs at the moment.

FindAndDestroy added 14:29 - Oct 12 I dont think Spud will be coming back to Southampton anytime time soon for any dealings, Les made it clear, that Spud is now considered as a rival, and we will not be selling anything to them... i just hope he stands by his words...

SanMarco added 14:29 - Oct 12 Although I hate the tabloids I am inclined to agree with Sonic on this one. Wanyama obviously wants out and will go. He may need reminding that he is in no position to 'force' a move in January though. There can be a tendency to believe what you want to from the press drivel. After all, why should we believe the earlier stuff about him putting Spurs behind him? It is just press gossip even if it comes from SFC (who after all have their own agenda). Anyone know whether he is in Kenya at the moment as these things often happen on international breaks when players 'forget' that what they say will get back to blighty. Would we be allowed to do that BoondockSaint? I can imagine 'free market' mantras like 'in restraint of trade' and anyway if Wanyama wants to 'force' a move he will be in a stronger, Clyne type, position in the summer...

SaintBrock added 18:17 - Oct 12 I am 100% certain that Victor & Sadio will be forced to stick to their contracts (-) 1 year , the mood music has changed significantly over the summer at SMS. Let's hope we sell both of them at the right time for us and to the highest bidders, ignoring their preferred option. If Stoke come in with a big wad sell them to Stoke! PS if they bugger off then Les should make sure we never sign another African.
