Southampton Considering Alternative To Danny Rohl Wednesday, 19th Mar 2025 14:00 Sheffield Wednesday supporters might be pleased to hear that Saints are said to be looking at an alternative to Danny Rohl, should the Owls owner play hard ball in the summer over the high by out clause that would need to be paid.
The man in question that Southampton are pursuing according to footballleagueworld.co.uk is Liam Rosenior.
The 40 year old former Hull Manager is currently at French Ligue 1 Strasbourg.
Rosenior has extensive experience as a player in both the Premier League & Championship,
But as a manager he is not so experienced, his first permanent position was only in November 2022 when he was appointed Hull City manager, he faced Saints in two games last season when his Hull side narrowly missed out on the play offs finishing 7th.
With the season barely finished Rosenior was sacked, with Hull City owner, Acun Ilicali saying that Rosenior had been sacked over a difference on football philosophy between the two with Ilicali wanting attacking football and Rosenior unable to offer that as a manager.
He was not out of work long, on July 25th 2024, he was appointed Head coach of Strasbourg on a 3 year contract.
In his 26 matches so far for Strasbourg in Ligue 1 he has presided over 26 games, winning 13, drawing 7 and losing just 7.
That sees Strasbourg 7th in Ligue 1, Paris St Germain are top with 68 points, 19 points ahead of their nearest rival, Marseille who are in 2nd with 49 points, Monaco are 3rd with 47 points and Strasbourg are just 4 points behind them, so there is still a lot to play for this season.
That beggars the question as to why Rosenior would swap a top flight European League and potential European qualification, perhaps even in the Champions League for the Championship.
Despite his lack of experience he might be a good fit for Southampton, but I suspect this is more about his agents looking to improve his contract in the summer at Strasbourg.

And if Strasbourg wants money as well, we'll end up with our 3rd or 4th choice as usual.... Splash the cash and buy one fewer player—simple! I'd be happy with either Röhl or Rosenior so get it done!

I'd much rather see Henrik Rydström than Rosenior , much more experience and he's improving with experience.

If he does come here it will not please a lot of our fans because his/ philosophy is the same as Russell's All based on possession and playing out from the keeper

Is this an early April Fool’s windup?

Good manager based on what he’s done so far. Hull gave us massive problems last season. As you say, could be agency talk

Only Sports Republic would recruit another possession obsessed coach.

The question is (assuming that Juric doesn't outlast the summer) ...what do we expect from a new manager. Big Q. about Rosenior is...what formation does he want to play? Someone noted that we have had a succession of our former managers who all had careers as defenders, and not since Koeman have we had anyone will real attacking intent. That maybe slightly unfair on Ralph Hasenhuttl (who was a striker) but if he hadn't persuaded the club to sign Danny Ings, we might have been relegated much sooner. Rosenoir's sacking from Hull related to their owner's demand for more attacking football. Any new manager will start with a clean sheet, (allowing for the obvious changes in player personnel already been widely-publicised) and he will want to import new names, but finding a suitable manager for a Championship club maybe less-challenging than getting someone to manage a Prem. club ...nd avoid the obvious threat of relegation . Unless publicity about these two is just " smoke and mirrors " and the club does intend to replace Juric with a proven " big name " manager with some success in the English game, we will once again employ someone from another country, and another league and expect him to bring his magic-wand" with him, along with his own staff from previous clubs. IF there is money left over, we may be able to buy some decent players for him to utilise.

Wouldn't it be nice if there was a promising young British manager somewhere - already with some proven ability to manage and not related to Russell Martin or Lucy Pinder, , who actually WANTED to come to St Marys! I get the feelint that Rohl and Rosenior are just the first of
