| Piers Morgan / GMB 08:52 - Apr 15 with 3650 views | Boris_ | F*cking hell they are unbearable at the moment. The whole program is just based on attacking the government for whatever they can, even when it's not relevant. Today once again Piers Morgan is shouting at people because VAT is charged on PPE and what a disgrace it is, even though it's completely irrelevant because the NHS are VAT registered so will claim back. Highlights that Piers knows feck all about BUSINESS. He's just been on the attack because the minister doesn't know how many social care workers, including carers in private care homes have died... 30,000 homes across the country as well. How is it feasible unless care homes report the deaths themselves? 19 nurses/Doctors have died from Covid-19, considering more than 1 in 40 people in the UK work for the NHS, 19 deaths from NHS workers actually shows that there is no increased risk of dying whilst working at hospital which suggests that PPE is largely getting to where it needs to be. How many of those 19 nurses/doctors caught Covid in hospital? In fact, how many of our current death toll died BECAUSE of Covid 19 as opposed to WITH Covid 19... that's the number I want to see. Eddie Large apparently died of Coronavirus, yet his wife was on TV saying he had been in hospital with heart failure for a few weeks and was never expected to survive/leave hospital. Should his cause of death be Coronavirus of Heart Failure? [Post edited 15 Apr 2020 9:01]

| Piers Morgan / GMB on 16:07 - Apr 16 by 1885_SFC | Taiwan’s healthcare system is regularly lauded as among the world’s best, ranking ninth in last year’s Bloomberg Health Care Efficiency Index. Citizens enjoy universal health coverage and medical standards are generally on par with those of global leaders... no thanks to China - who continually block Taiwan's membership of the W.H.O. The likes of the United States, Japan, Germany, and Australia are all continual backers of Taiwan joining the W.H.O. - but China is firmly against it - so that's that. The sooner the W.H.O is overhauled and stops pandering to China - the better. |
https://www.express.co.uk/news/uk/1269233/Trump-news-WHO-funding-uk-world-health Reacting to the US President's decision to pull funding to the WHO, Mr Snowdon said the organisation's response to COVID-19 has been “dangerously inept and often bizarre”. Writing in the Daily Telegraph, he said Mr Trump is “right to threaten to defund the WHO”, adding: “If it cannot be reformed, it should be replaced." "It needs to be made clear that the WHO leadership has to be replaced and the agency has to return to its core mission of tackling epidemics with transparency, honesty and a single-minded focus.

You are politicizing this as much as anyone. You are blaming certain people as much as anyone. You refuse to discuss China being to blame and the WHO messing up, as you say now is not the time. But it is OK for you to blame others LOL. You are one messed up cookie. |
You're a fine one to talk about mental stability Alan, you're about as mental as they come.

I'm sure it's got a great healthcare system. What's that got to do with the more general problem of its tricky international status which is at the root of all this?

It's got everything to do with it. Not a member of the W.H.O. - but up there with the best of healthcare and knows what it's on about. So when Taiwan says, back in December, the virus DOES spread human-to-human - the opposite of what China was saying - it's looked upon as a 'rogue state' and not to be believed. It couldn't be more political!

Spot on sir. And in the process of being so political the WHO have factually been responsible for deaths. Had they listened, and done the right and neutral thing, a lot of this could have been avoided. Hence Trump is right to be pissed at them.

I didn't say it wasn't political. I agree with you, Taiwan is very political. The point I was making is that having a great healthcare system doesn't make it any more or less political. Taiwan is political. Always has been and the WHO does not exist in a vacuum and is part of the UN and China is a permanent member of the security council. Tricky, no. And what the WHO should have just thrown diplomacy to the wind, and told China that it was going to listen to Taiwan rather than China, even though the outbreak was in mainland China. What planet are you on?

Also... Your argument seems to be that the WHO should have listened to Taiwan instead of China and had they done so, they would have taken things much more seriously much much sooner and saved lives. I think that's what you are saving, yes? And I think we are talking about the period from late December to around 20 Jan when human to human transmission wasn't acknowledged, yes? And yet the guy who is pointing the finger at the WHO spent pretty much the whole of February downplaying the extent of the virus in the US and even towards the of March was talking of the 'beautiful timeline' of the whole thing being over by Easter.

From the FT: Taiwan says WHO failed to act on coronavirus transmission warning Relationship with Beijing blamed for not sharing alert over human-to-human infection Taiwan has accused the World Health Organization of failing to communicate an early warning about transmission of the coronavirus between humans, slowing the global response to the pandemic. Health officials in Taipei said they alerted the WHO at the end of December about the risk of human-to-human transmission of the new virus but said its concerns were not passed on to other countries. Taiwan is excluded from the WHO because China, which claims it as part of its territory, demands that third countries and international bodies do not treat it in any way that resembles how independent states are treated. The WHO’s relationship with China has been criticised in the past, with some accusing the organisation of overly praising Beijing’s handling of the coronavirus outbreak despite allegations local officials had initially covered it up. Taiwan said its doctors had heard from mainland colleagues that medical staff were getting ill – a sign of human-to-human transmission. Taipei officials said they reported this to both International Health Regulations (IHR), a WHO framework for exchange of epidemic prevention and response data between 196 countries, and Chinese health authorities on December 31. Taiwanese government officials told the Financial Times the warning was not shared with other countries. “While the IHR’s internal website provides a platform for all countries to share information on the epidemic and their response, none of the information shared by our country’s [Centers for Disease Control] is being put up there,” said Chen Chien-jen, Taiwan’s vice-president. “The WHO could not obtain first-hand information to study and judge whether there was human-to-human transmission of Covid-19. This led it to announce human-to-human transmission with a delay, and an opportunity to raise the alert level both in China and the wider world was lost,” said Mr Chen, an epidemiologist by training who was health minister at the time of the Sars outbreak. China’s health ministry only confirmed human-to-human transmission on January 20, after the WHO said in mid-January there might be “limited” human-to-human transmission but stepped back from this view on the same day. Asked about the comments, the WHO said under its mandate it needed trust to “hold frank and open discussions on sometimes sensitive issues” and to enable this level of candour “requires that we respect the confidentiality of such communications”. Western countries have since been accused of failing to act even when they were warned about human-to-human transmission. The WHO has had to strike a delicate balance with China throughout the outbreak, with some accusing the organisation of being too pliant while medical experts said it had coped admirably. The challenge of managing the relationship extended to negotiations over the wording of a report following a joint mission to China last month. The nine-day trip comprised 12 WHO experts and 13 Chinese officials and was focused on the country’s response to the outbreak. Three of the WHO officials also visited Wuhan, the centre of the outbreak, as part of the mission. The WHO’s Bruce Aylward, the Canadian epidemiologist who led the team, described the process as “fantastic”. But he told the FT there was “huge back and forth” with Chinese officials about what went into the report.

Yes, that's what I read too. Maybe you are going to tell me that I am twisting things again but isn't this just as I posted. The criticism is that Taiwan were warning from the end of December and the WHO didn't acknowledge the human to human contact until Jan 20? That's what I said isn't it? You also haven't quote the whole article. There is this bit at the end: Despite the criticism, the WHO has impressed many medical professionals and public health experts with its speed and effectiveness. “The WHO has filled its leadership role admirably,” said Mark Woolhouse, professor of infectious disease epidemiology at Edinburgh University. “Though you could quibble a bit about timings, they have done all the right things so far.” You have take these things as you find them. A reasonable interpretation of all this would seem to me to be that Taiwan were right about the human to human contact and maybe the Chinese were reluctant to acknowledge the extent of the problem early doors. But to blame the WHO for listening to the Chinese seems to be being very 'wise after the event'. In retrospect, yes, they should have listened to Taiwan but the political status of Taiwan vis a vis China made that politically very tricky for them. And as the quote above suggests, apart from the timings they've done OK. Trump meanwhile takes this 'quibble' (that is exactly the right word) as an excuse to cut their funding when he himself is equally as guilty of downplaying the thing. That's no surprise to me - he doesn't care about the hypocrisy involved because he's shameless - as long as it deflects things towards the WHO, he is fine with it. Seriously, what am I missing? Actually, forget that - if you read this all differently that's fine. I am not sure that there is any point trying to agree about Trump.
