Top 3 moments at St Mary’s on 23:49 - Apr 26 by Gennaro_Contaldo
I think this is my number 1, above many others. Koeman taking the p*ss, the best Saints team for many years, a great comeback.
A few points of that game
Pelles goal, superb finish, the same player that was booed a few weeks earlier Pelle and ward prowse contribution to the winner, pure battling and hard work, two More players given endless grief by our sh1t fans Claise started, missed a trick here he is better player than our fan realised

You're right, TCM. It was 2001.
I was lucky enough to go on a tour a few weeks before it opened and it was really exciting. I must have driven past the construction site every day during the build and to see it complete was great.

The loudest I have ever heard St Marys when the goal went in. Remember Norwich fans commenting on forums that they'd never heard noise like it at a football match too.

Until the Norwich fans heard the loud sounds of screaming, wailing, frantic bell ringing and mass panic when they invaded the Fratton Park pitch a few years later
Mirror most of those said here, the league cup midweek game against the skates is my highlight though, absolutely venemous atmosphere that day and the skates buckled under the pressure.
Also got a real soft spot for that cup game against Spurs in the 2003 run, the goal from Svensson was superb.

The roar from the crowd of a crucial goal scored is worth so much more than the moronic continuous chanting, bell ringing and drums like they do down the road. How anyone would want to stand/sit near someone who rings a bell all game is beyond me.

I like this quote from the Guardian match report:
"Portsmouth have toiled in Southampton 's shadow for an aeon now but never looked capable of lifting themselves for this occasion."
The last derby at the Dell in 1996 was similar to that first one at St Mary's.

I also flew back to England in August, 2001 for the first games at St Mary's. But, the friendly v Espanyol which preceded the league game v Chelsea was the one that really gave me that wow moment. We may decry St Mary's now but seeing the sheer size of it after the cramped conditions at the Dell was really impressive at the time. In the days of terracing, St Mary's would have had a 60,000+ capacity, and probably much more than that as even little Fratton Park had an official capacity of 59,000 (obviously never needed) in the days of terracing, and St Mary's is clearly a much bigger structure than that.

Says the fan whose club has never had an attendance over 35k at home, despite being around for 135 years.

That game in 'the 96 was strange, we'd heard how their fans would be deafening, how their team were going to cause a shock/upset and how the sucmmers wouldn't know what hit them.
In reality it was a walk over on the pitch, their fans were absolutely silent most of the game and we probably should have won by way more.
It was almost (almost) disappointing in how easy the whole thing was.

A bit like the final PL meeting at Fratton park then

I remember my Pompey mates telling me that the wrong fans snapped up their tickets for that match.

The 3 goal victory doesn't even make it into the top 5 biggest derby wins though:
