Talksport ranked the 30 biggest football clubs in Britain 10:26 - Sep 1 with 19361 viewsdirk_doone

This topic seems to be discussed on here a lot by our obsessed visitor from Little Pompey so here are all the main lists that take a range of criteria into account.

Talksport give a very balanced, objective view, taking a range of criteria into account:

An alternative list from 1Sports1, also taking a range of criteria into account:

Your owner didnt have his assets frozen , the stock market crash happened and you his dad was investigated for smuggling weapons. You might want to check history. Your owner didnt actually put money into the club - he took a load of loans on the club which he guaranteed. It was always going to end bitterly. A small club like yourself at the time couldnt sustain that sort of level of wage bill.

Surely if Gaos assets where frozen he wouldnt be able to sell players as his assets are frozen.......

As for
"We haven't had a 23k+ stadium for a quarter of a century,"
shouldnt that be
"We haven't NEEDED a 23k+ stadium for a quarter of a century,"
[Post edited 8 Sep 2020 14:07]

The point you are missing, is that our owner never had his assets stolen, never went to prison, never sold arms to Angola. Think about it, I'm sure you will get it.

But due to circumstances, the clubs assets were sold quickfire. if Gao's assets were frozen, he would sell players and put the money into new accounts. When fat Kat sold her major stake, she decided to sell you biggest asset, which would be rather similar.

You only became a 'big club' when you had a shiny new stadium. That is what shiny stadiums do.

When Leicester won the league, they were not a top 4 size club.

You have recently had 4 top 8 finishes, probably the biggest achievement ever for your club after finishing second in the league. That was a major success for your club, just enjoy it, it possibly won't ever happen again.

As for our club, we have achieved more than your club this century, despite the collapse, and we even forfeited a chase for the 5th spot to concentrate on the FA cup. Your club have never been anywhere near the 5th spot for 30 years.

Wigan won the FA Cup in 2013 you are right you are about the same level as them, as for the fact that we have never been anywhere near 5th for 30 years, what about 2014/15th when we finished 7th we were in the top 3 at Xmas and only 4 points off it come the final table, going into the final day with a chance of 5th

Or the following year 6th when we were 3 points off it going into the final game and would have finished there if Utd had lost .

You need to check a few facts before you start creating Portsmyths, anyore stories about dock strikes that didn't happen or the fact we stole your food that you want to bring up

So, 4 points off, and 3 points and 12 goals behind ie effectively 4 points.

4 points isn't that close Nick, despite what you like to think.

Wigan have only ever finished in the top ten once, and have only ever been to one FA cup final. Hardly similar

Over the last 60 years Wigan are pretty similar to Little Pompey tbh.

They've had one more season in the PL, you've had one more Cup final, home crowds much the same this century and both spent more than 50 of the last 60 years as lower League fodder.

That's pretty similar isn't it?, to anyone alive today it is for sure.

What your club have been really good at over the last 40 years is being in and around the 2nd tier clubs without ever achieving too much.

Except for the fact that Wigan haven't spent more time in the top league, and Pompey have had a third times as big attendances, despite having a smaller stadium against Wigan's brand new stadium.

And these were the good years for Wigan, although they obviously won something, unlike your club.

Wigan Twitter 304k little Pompey 145.9k .

Pompey have lost 100 followers since I last looked an hour ago , goes to prove they are constantly on the decline !

Enjoy these heady days for your club. They are pretty good for a middle sized club. Definitely a 20-25 size club, although at the moment you are around 15-18.

Sorry 8-8 Top Tier draw last 60 years.

I also got attendances wrong this century, you blow them out the water 17,000 v 14,000 average.

Still 14,000's good for a Rugby town

Wigan have spent as much time in the PL as your club in the last 15 years, have won the FA cup ie matching your club's entire history, and have won the 3rd level league twice ie same as your club's entire history. Maybe they are a bigger club?

Course they are,

Last 60 years (no one can remember before then) in the Top tier,
Saints 42, Little Pompey 8, Little Wigan 8.
And the Rugby town has similar support to you.

Now your both Third Div dross, both found your level.

Not sure what the 60 year thing is tbh, that's rather obscure, we were talking about the last 15 years ie where you have spent as much time in the 3rd level as Wigan, but of course they won those leagues.

Hardly anyone alive can remember more than 60 years ago, (is that obscure?) that's why no one alive can rememember Little Pompey being any good in the Top Tier.

They can well remember playing Port Vale, Plymouth, Peterboro et al many times in lower leagues, but you can count on two hands the number of times theTop teams have ventured down the M275.

Deary deary me. Look back in the day when Pompey were relevant then home crowds mattered but nowadays a clubs support is not judged by how many go through the turnstiles . Income is generated by their online footprint.

The more followers you have the more exposure you get the more revenue you can generate. If you dismiss twitter Facebook and such you are just showing what a dinasour you are. Saints are a worldwide brand now with millions around the globe eagerly hoovering the news coming out of St Mary's , from Telford to Tokyo and Toronto Saints fans eagerly follow their team on match days.

I know you love the past but I'm afraid those days have gone pops. Pompey have missed the boat , they are losing followers , the younger generation are deserting the club for the bigger teams like saints and the London clubs or city , Utd and Liverpool.

The young fans want to see their heroes wearing the 3 Lions on their shirts not some unknown African country that you claim to be an International cap worth having.

I bet the young pompyites dream of following in the steps of JWP playing in the top league and playing for England , what an example of how to escape the footballing wilderness that is Portsmouth.

But eh ho Old fella , you keep on believing what you believe , history needs to be preserved like the memories of those who fought in the wars soon nobody will be alive to tell those wonderful stories of a packed old girl with the sailors hats being flung in the air when they scored.

Trust no one in a circus.

In the last 60 years, we have played Man Utd 28 times, for which you would need 6 hands to count (if you need them), almost exactly the same number of times we have played Peterborough.

You're not very good at this are you?
