This weekend is being hailed as a success for women's football with a big push from sky tv etc and televised games on a day when there was little other football shown live/
Several clubs had record attendances , but the truth is for all the media attention, they were little more than the usual League two or National conference turnouts.
Chelsea's 4-0 win over Manchester City was watched by 3,174 - the biggest attendance at the Academy Stadium so far this season - while Birmingham City also recorded their largest crowd this campaign with 1,386 at St Andrew's for the defeat by Villa.
There was a new record crowd registered for Spurs at The Hive as 2,896 saw them draw with league leaders Arsenal - live on BBC One - and Brighton had 3,566 fans at the Amex.
This was the big push weekend after a couple of years of the women's game being given equal billing in all the media especially Sky & the BBC, yet the crowds did not flock to watch.
Most people I speak to are supportive of womens football, but having it pushed down their throats on the front pages so to speak of the BBC & Sky is putting them off, it is given equal billing, yet it is not an equal product, it is being pushed for the sake of being pushed and if it is not careful it will die.
Possibly not a PC viewpoint, as i say I want to see it succeed, but I fear it wont

I've said it before and I'll say it again..the standard of womans football is shyte...it doesn't deserve the coverage it gets and its not the next big thing that many broadcasters desire.
I expect the game you watched on Saturday afternoon Nick, was of a higher level.
Uk media is in full ticking the box mode currently..and many great shows have been reduced to tedium due to the current objectives. |

Nick as I understand it, is saying that it's great for women to play football if they want to, and it's great for people to watch it, if they want to. It's great that it's promoted and good luck to them. But it's not the same as mens football and clearly isn't as popular, going by the attendances at the weekend. They shouldn't be saying Chelsea got beaten at home or Southampton lose their top striker to covid when they are talking about the women's team. There should be a section for womens game, not mixed in with the men's game. They should say Chelsea women, Southampton women etc. The fact that they don't say this, is where people rightly say, it's being rammed down peoples throats. [Post edited 15 Nov 2021 16:25]

What I am trying to say is that I don’t think that anyone is trying to build it up to be better than it is. The impression I have is that they are just trying to give it more coverage as as been happening in other sports for years. No one bats an eyelid when women’s tennis, athletics, etc etc get mentioned in the media. There seems to be a concerted effort to give women’s football the same standing. I know for those who think that women should still spend their time between the kitchen and the supermarket 😉, but as I have said, eventually it will find its own level and we will have to find something else to moan about. As with all other sports, it has nothing to do with women being better or equally as good as the men, it is just about women competing and being treated equally. It will ultimately succeed or fail on TV depending on an audience so, as I say, if the current effort to grow the audience doesn’t work, it will be given less importance.

Why dont they give Ladies Football their own TV channel , there is one for the Golf , F1 , Darts when its on , Cricket , there is even a NFL Channel.
Another option to judge the appeal is make Corrie , Eastenders and womens football Pay per View , that way they can generate their own income and if it becomes super popular then they can reap all the benefits. The income could increase the ladies wages or more likely we would have Brad Pitt and George Clooney being transferred from Corrie to Eastenders

You have a choice whether to watch it or not. I don’t like boxing or horse racing so just zone out when that stuff is “forced down my throat” on the news or elsewhere. I’m not sure that there is anything wrong with equal opportunities either.
Back in the 60’s I loved motor racing, especially Formula 1 and Formula 5000 but if you were lucky you might catch a bit of the British Grand Prix on the news but none of the others and you could forget live coverage. Now I don’t bother with it anymore it is all over the place. That didn’t just happen over night. I’d be really surprised if women’s football ever gets as big as men’s in this country but you can’t blame people for trying to market it. When I was a kid none of the London editions of national newspapers used to carry reports of Saints games and as tv coverage was also very limited I, as a minority Saints fan in London, received virtually no media coverage. Coverage is now available for multiple minority interest sports thankfully. Just look at the way that some of the martial arts sports take off when a Brit does well in the Olympics. Any sport for that matter. People who are interested pick it up, people who don’t ignore it and get in with other stuff. As I have said before, there is clearly a concerted effort to push women’s football (which is growing by the way) but at a certain point, if the interest isn’t there, it will get pushed back down the agenda. | | | |

Football so Christine Sinclair ( who is she you all ask ) considered the best lady footballer in the world , well I would be surprised if she made the top 10,000,000 in the world .

Round up a bunch of reasonably competent male footballers who decide that they are now women and romp to success with a 100% record and a whole season of clean-sheets.
This wouldn't be at all fair on the women who genuinely play and enjoy football or their (relatively few) fans.

It seems that I have a different opinion of what “forced down your throat” means than others. To me it means you are forced to consume something whether you want to or not. I have never felt forced to watch women’s football and when result come up I do what I do when I am not interested in something and either turn the channel over or look at my phone.
