Yesterday showed that when adversity rears its ugly head the United Kingdom is United ...on the other hand the EU is all over the place...the Germans main concern is Gas supply.

And why wouldn’t it be worried about its gas supply? We still have people without power a week after “a bit of wind” took out power lines in the south. The Russian invasion of Ukraine had all kinds of international ramifications. If we were so reliant on Russian gas don’t you think that would be a problem for us? As it it Russians own large bits of London and Chelsea FC. Doesn’t really affect most of our lives does it? But wait until petrol prices go through the roof, food prices go up even more and the hike in the cost of living climb even higher and you will see the divisions here widen.

Nice to see Moscow and Beijing concentrating efforts on 10:05 - Feb 24 by dirk_doone | Yes, as well as their extensive internet campaign directed from Moscow, Russia paid Nigel Farage and other Brexit campaigners through Arron Banks, who received the money from Moscow in the guise of returns on a bogus gold mine investment and visited the Russian embassy regularly throughout the campaign leading up to the referendum. Banks's Russian wife was instrumental. in controlling him. Russophile Dominic Cummings' widely reported falling out with the KGB when he was living in Moscow enabled him to return to England unsuspected to cause as much chaos as possible, starting with his highly effective Brexit propaganda. Matthew Elliott, the Chief Executive of the Vote Leave campaign, was a founding member of the pro-Putin, Conservative Friends of Russia group, which was another avenue used to funnel Russian money into the campaign." A group trip to Moscow attracted controversy, when it emerged that the Russian diplomat liaising with Conservative Friends of Russia was the son of a top-ranking Kremlin spy." Sir Malcolm Rifkind, who had served as a minister under Prime Ministers Margaret Thatcher and John Major, and was then chairman of the Intelligence and Security Committee, resigned from the Conservative Friends of Russia group, saying he had been unhappy for some time about the group's behaviour and "political direction. It emerged that the group's key contact at the Russian Embassy in London was First Secretary Sergey Nalobin, the son of a KGB/FSB general. Nalobin invited the group to hold its launch party in the Kensington garden of the Russian ambassador, Alexander Yakovenko." The Russia Report on Moscow's interference in the Brexit campaign was buried by the current government and when it eventually emerged was heavily censored. "Arron Banks, the millionaire businessman who bankrolled Nigel Farage’s campaign to quit the EU, had multiple meetings with Russian embassy officials in the run-up to the Brexit referendum, documents seen by the Observer suggest. Banks, who gave £12m of services to the campaign, becoming the biggest donor in UK history, has repeatedly denied any involvement with Russian officials, or that Russian money played any part in the Brexit campaign. The Observer has seen documents which a senior Tory MP says, if correct, raise urgent and troubling questions about his relationship with the Russian government. The communications suggest: Multiple meetings between the leaders of Leave.EU and high-ranking Russian officials, from November 2015 to 2017. Two meetings in the week Leave.EU launched its official campaign. An introduction to a Russian businessman, by the Russian ambassador, the day after Leave.EU launched its campaign, who reportedly offered Banks a multibillion dollar opportunity to buy Russian goldmines. A trip to Moscow in February 2016 to meet key partners and financiers behind a gold project, including a Russian bank". [Post edited 24 Feb 2022 11:25]

Good post. Russia's cyber intelligence Services seed social media - particularly "Echo Chamber" groups with messages that further its aims and policies. The classic case being fracking. Protest groups were constantly recycling and refeeding erroneous "facts" or data placed by spoofed userids and taken out of context - the most obvious being that fracking causes earthquakes - endlessly repeated and reinforced by people who had no idea what they were talking about. For the record it is our present Government who caved in to protesters when the majority of the country were in favour. No wonder Putin does not feel alarmed by sanctions. It is in Russia's interests to see that Britain does not become energy self sufficient and particularly remains a) a net importer of gas and b) has no onshore reserves such as those provided by shale gas (offshore gas fields are easily sabotaged by submarine "accidents"). We will see Russia influencing the nuclear debate too for similar reasons, because power lines under the channel from France are just as vulnerable.

That's just pathetic...you think that a maniac holding us to ransom would cause division in the occupants of the united kingdom!! All 4 nations became one again yesterday..that is great to see...party politics and nationalism dissolved under the very real threat of war in Europe and obviously there in the UK. It would be a pretty pathetic person who started to complain about commodity prices in the midst of war....although I think you might of just shown your hand there Sogs.

Go back and look at history. It starts off with solidarity and then the cracks start appearing. We were already on shaky ground economically before this with the effects of Brexit and Covid. I am not talking about support for Ukraine wavering but with the gap between the have and have nots widening even more so will public dissatisfaction.

Nice to see Moscow and Beijing concentrating efforts on 21:59 - Dec 23 by dirk_doone | Brexit was important for Putin to weaken the EU and pave the way for the reestablishment of the Eastern Bloc, and that's why he financed it. With the UK in it, the EU was a power to be reckoned with, which stood between Russia and the the USA and was almost their equal. Russia would not have risked invading Ukraine or the surrounding countries but now the balance of power has been tipped in its favour. If it could prise just one more country away from the EU, it would undoubtedly invade and reestablish control over Eastern Europe. It's certainly poised to do so. [Post edited 23 Dec 2021 22:00]

The UK's Defence Secretary Ben Wallace organised a donor conference of military aid on Friday evening, which was held virtually. Every nation agreed to contribute." Meanwhile in Brussels they have agreed that Lorry drivers arriving from Dover will have all Ham sandwiches confiscated but Cheese is ok as long as it Brie , cheddar will need to be laboratory tested on arrival for traces of Branstone pickle.

It's wishful thinking on the part of Brexit voters to say categorically that 'Russia didn't change the outcome'. We don't know it they did, or if they didn't, and for me I am pretty sure that the vote itself was not rigged, so we as a country can't pass the blame for Brexit onto Putin. My guess, however, would be that far more people are now aware of (1) what Putin has been up to for all these years in terms of doing his best to create division in the West (2) what an absolute c*nt he is and (3) the extent to which the UK have let his cronies occupy properties and positions of influence in the UK. The voices criticising Biden and Nato in the early days of the invasion seem to me to have died down a little. But these Putin stooges will be back. Keep 'em peeled.
