I lived and worked in Ukraine (in oil & gas as I've mentioned before) and I know the people pretty well.
They work hard and play hard, their hospitality and work ethic is amazing. To see them casually kicking land mines off the road doesn't surprise me at all, nor the fighting spirit of their men and women.
During the 2014 invasion the army turned up at our workshop (oil and gas production site east of Poltava) on their way to Crimea with two tanks on flatbeds that wouldn't start. We got them in and changed the fuel filters and a few other bits and got them sorted. We ended up sitting with them all in a tea shack with a table full of food and litres of Ukrainian Vodka drinking toast after toast to Ukraine, UK and everything else apart from Putin. Those officers and lads were probably on about 2 quid a day but were cheerful, strong and great fun. In the morning they were all up and away no problem, laughing at us expats who were all like dogshit to a man.
They are a great race of people and it's been no surprise to me how they've p*ssed all over the Russians so far. One thing I can't believe though is how Putin seemed to think it would all be over in three days. A serious misjudgement indeed. | | | |

The big miscalculation was going for Kiev and the cities east from there. Their defeats along that border have given the Ukrainians, and the West a real feel that the whole Russian invasion can be repulsed. If they had stuck to the Donbas, which is where their support lies, they might have got away with it. Easy to see that now. But it has been edifying to see just how sh1t their military is turning out to be. Whatever happens, Putin’s bid to be a world leader will end in ignominy.
Unless Germany, France and Italy cave in (most likely), the ongoing economic damage to Russia will be debilitating, along with the huge knock to national pride. The West will help Ukraine on the way to recovery, and the Russians may not even get their land corridor to Crimea. We cannot trust the French, and probably not the Germans either, and as long as Putin knows there are splits in NATO, he will continue to believe his delusions, because he will not be slapped down every time he raises his head.
