Just hope it works out with him.
Couldn't bear to see a legend get ripped apart by our fans.

Bare bones.

If he gets the job it will be a case of "finally". I've been expecting him to be appointed either by you or Blackburn for the last five years or so.

He has earned a crack at a Championship club as he has done exceptionally well at Wycombe, a club who average little more than 5,500, over a long period.

I wouldn't want to be the man who succeeds him at Adams Park.

Maybe a straight swap with Critchley going to wycombe?
welcome on board btw....

yeah i suppose that's fair. I'm probably overreacting.
But plenty were horrible about Gerry second time around, and loads have been nasty about Ollie in the past with stupid nicknames etc on here.
At least he'll have the (initial) full support of everyone. Sat should be a great atmosphere.

Which will last until blunder number 475 of the season and Blackburn score!

More seriously, I said before Saturday, that I wouldn't be THAT unhappy if NC went, because we need 'something' to get those points.

Whether that's a new manager we will find out, but, you're right, we can usually manage to get behind a new man for a few games at least!

I'd like to know how many Wycombe games people against him have watched.

As to his style, I'd like to know how you make a pure footballing side out of a club with an average gate of 5.5k that is consistently challenging in a league position that is currently 12 below the one we find ourselves in. How does anyone on here have a scoobies what his preferred style of play will be with the players we have here where despite our current position he will have resources at his disposal he could only dream of at Wycombe.

There isn't a manager out there, that would take this job, that isn't a risk, however I reckon the positives he brings far outweigh that and I for one will be very happy if he comes here.

I far prefer him to Nathan Jones, or Chris Wilder.

Do you think the accounts on twitter that were demanding Dyche in the summer and Wilder now are gonna give Ainsworth a fair crack of the whip?

Who cares?

As long as us at LR do, that's all that matters.

In talks with Wycombe re compensation I hear

Whoops. Really should check earlier post
[Post edited 20 Feb 2023 15:05]

If Gareth does come then fans should note that despite all the talk of being constrained by FFP the board will have found a way to first settle the contracts of Critchley and his coaching staff, and then pay Wycombe compensation for Ainsworth.

In the politest way possible...this is nonsense.

None of our players have achieved anything noteworthy in their careers, with the exception of probably Dieng and even then he only played the easy group games last year whilst Mendy was injured.

If whoever they've previously played for, and wherever they've come from, gives them a feeling of superiority over any manager, then again all that suggests to me is that it is them who are the problem and not anyone else. So anyone with that attitude can bugger off.

To be quite frank its no different to hearing of one of our players slagging off NC in a pub last week - NC may have been terrible but all that says to me about that player is he's a twt who we're better off without.

Agreed. However we're stuck with these t**** until the summer. Like everyone else on this board I've got absolutely no idea what's gone on behind the scenes these last few months but it would appear half a dozen or so of our brave boys have downed tools. NC? Big Les? The Board? or a combination of all of them? Think whoever comes in (GA or otherwise) is on a hiding to f*** all with this lot and we certainly haven't got anyone else knocking on the first team door. Never mind the paddle, we haven't even got a canoe in a swamp of poo.

Sky reporting we're in talks with Wild Thing on 13:10 - Feb 20 by CynicalR

What happens if the reason why he's been at Wycombe Wanderers for 10 years with no-one else taking a punt on him is because he's not good enough?

What happens when players used to working with coaches of the calibre of Beale and before him Mark Warburton justifiably ask what this man has done in his career to justify his appointment at a club of this level and coach players like them? What if the old 'show us your medals' comes out and he can point to being Port Vale's player of the year in 1998?

What happens when seasoned defenders make his long-ball game look like a relic from the 1980s?

There's a lot of reasons why fans will be quick to turn against him.

Something to remember is also that he isn't a club legend but a cult hero which will not afford him the respect both Francis in his second spell and Wilkins got despite clearly being the wrong person for the job.

This has the potential to be a nightmare both on and off the pitch.

Warburton had managed one of the biggest clubs in Europe and also had a decent record in this division.

Beale may have been unknown to most fans in the country but inside the game he already had a reputation as 'one to watch'.

Gareth Ainsworth has managed Wycombe Wanders in the 3rd division for 9 out of the last 10 years and no other club has been heavily linked with him bar us.

There is a BIG difference.

Ainsworth has won more promotions than both Beale and Warburton combined, he's played more professional games at every level than Beale and Warburton combined, he's managed more professional games than Beale and Warburton combined (no idea if that's true, but if we're just saying silly things then this seems possible), he's got more hair and a better figure than both...

I mean, come on. He's the only guy who got Wycombe Wanderers promoted in 130 years. I doubt Mick Beale would work hard enough to pull that off.

Are you really saying the players will only respond to a suitable CV that compares with Mark Warburton? If so what was that three month losing run last season all about? The players have won one game in 18. Let's not worry too much about their feelings.

What have our players done in their careers? As Ainsworth has done more than any of them

All appointments are risks and he might not be good enough but we just sacked a manager who was one of only 15 with a certain coaching licence and our overpaid mugs of players didn't like him so fck em at the end of the day

I agree with that last sentiment but we DO need 20 players who want to play to get those 9 or so points!

As far as this goes I'd be asking the players in return what they've done in their careers to justify being sniffy about who is managing them.

Also hasn't been a problem with loads of managers down the years - Arsene Wenger being probably the best example!

I agree, talk of burning a previous rep is overrated. In any event, if Gareth is in the running I'd like to think that it's based on merit rather than any previous association as a player.

That’s the point though isn’t it, if Ainsworth had never played for us he wouldn’t be even thought of as an option.
Then again Les wouldn’t be our DOF.

We are doing what we did in 2001. Owners fear relegation, bring someone in to appease the fans and deflect attention away from them.

Didn’t work then, I fear it won’t work now.

If the results suffer he, or whoever else gets the job, will get ripped apart. Just like every other Manager previously and the current DoF, CEO and owners are.
That's why I posted the other day that football in general should move away from social media, it's not a good place to be and, as you rightly say, doesn't seem to fit the narrative of the people at the ground.

"He has to go" That should be their new motto.

Fair points.

I've only ever seen his teams on the telly, but really hated the style of play. Fully accept that I'm talking about a small sample size as well - maybe ten games or so. I don't really buy the line of thinking that it's harder for a lower-budget team to play nice attacking football than long ball, but I may well be wrong.

Like you, I'll also be hoping that he would feel able to play decent football should he land at Rangers. Because I like watching us, and because I like him.

He was entrusted by QPR in the development of Eze. Eze developed well there and was very positive about him. Wycombe likewise have attracted and developed a lot of young talent during his time there. Players who have been with him generally sing his praises. His record on a shoestring budget is admirable. Tactically he has been shown to be pretty astute at getting the best out of his squad. Can see the attraction for us.

Never knowingly understood

It doesn't work like that.

The homegrown players have been exposed to the management of a former England manager, Warburton who was one of the most respected coaches at this level an Michael Beale who was/is considered one of the best young coaches in the country and, possibly, further afield.

We have players we've brought in who have played at Chelsea, Liverpool, PSV Eindhoven, Spurs and Manchester United and they will ask questions about someone who the most high-profile club he has managed is Wycombe Wanderers and the most high-profile player is Adebayo Akinfenwa.

Unless he is brought in by the club expecting relegation and getting the building blocks in already, he will have a couple of months at best to win the players over.

It's unlikely to happen in my opinion.

"....he will have a couple of months at best to win the players over."

Again, that applies to anyone!

And for one reason or another Warburton, Beale and Critchley didn't 'work'.

Wilder, 3rd in the betting, did wonders in the PL over a long period of time, didn't work at all at Middlesboro.

Some managers don't fit at some clubs, like players.

Ha! True.

But I'd have thought he may have reached that stage to prove himself at another club - and one that he has an affinity with, even if it is a basket case.

And anyway, he has a record of getting clubs promoted from League One...
