Pros and Cons of going up 09:03 - Dec 10 with 9036 viewsPatfromPoole

Pros

Prestige
Keeping Harwood-Bellis
Club finances will be a lot healthier
Not being stuck in the abyss
Keeps us at least one League above the Skates
More London away games

Cons

Winning less games next season
VAR
More games moved by SKY
Being in a totally predictable League where you know we would finish bottom 6
More expensive tickets for home games
No derby game with Skates
Sterile atmosphere in the Prem
Having to deal with Scousers / United fans in our end
Having to play bloody Boscombe

I was really gutted leaving Watford’s ground yesterday. But the more I think about it…….

So, punching below our weight, the coward's way out, and it's not even as if we look any more likely to win a trophy.

We've spent nearly all of my life in the top flight and it's where we belong. Be the best that you can be and if that means being the 15th best team in the country, so be it; It's better than being the 25th best. Even Bournemouth are clearly better than us right now. We were even afraid to play a pre-season game against them because we knew they'd beat us. That is not how we should be.

I'm in my mid 40's in my lifetime we've almost always been a top flight team, so yes to me it's where we belong.

I mean for 37 of the 44 years i've been alive we've been top flight.

Whereas in the same time period you've only been top flight for 8.

Not really a surprise i think we belong in the top flight is it?

For round figures, in the last 50 years, you have been TF for 38 years ie 76% or around three quarters of that time.

Well done, but that doesn’t mean you belong there. Since your club have existed, you have spent a third of the time in the TF. So you belong where you are, and have existed in various leagues.

You’ve had your spells in the top flight, and a had a good run, but the club became complacent, greedy and took their eye off the ball and dropped down. And I suggested this had happened a little while back, and it came to pass.

Your club just aint a perennial top flight club, you aint big enough, and the close proximity clubs have stolen your thunder in terms of getting the best local and nearby talent. If one or two out of Bristol City, Cardiff and Plymouth ever really get their act together, you will be really stuffed.

Bournemouth have just won 3-0 at Man U and their fans will be buzzing. No result in the championship can remotely match that high. I literally get no buzz when we beat the likes of QPR 2-1 at home

I agree. I can say, with a sparkle, Ihaveseen my team slug it out with Man City, and even come out on top. I was pleased but not ecstatic when we beat Leeds this season, and will no doubt raise a smile if we getawin off Ipswich. Good luck to those who will wet their pants over the rest of it. I actually get more of a thrill watching my grandsons teams win than our 70 percenters. Last season, Bree was a WTF? selection, now I hope for it every week. It is not that he is a better player though.

Yeah that would be great but for the one problem, we have been and we are. But you know facts don't tend to count for much in portsmyth so i don't expect you to understand that.

We're not a PL team and with RM in charge are unlikely to be so next season so a lot of this is useless speculation.

Perennial top flight clubs are the following:

Everton
Liverpool
Arsenal

Then
Villa
M United
M City
Chelsea
Newcastle
Spurs

Soton is nowhere near a Perennial top flight club. As I stated above, the dillusion is strong with some here.

Pro's
My friends and family not losing their jobs.
We've always been a top flight team so it's where we should be.
We might keep onto some of our better players.
cheaper away tickets.

Con's
We'd get beaten most weeks, and with Martin's tactics take an absolute hammering more than once
VAR
We'd attract more of the posh/out of town/overseas fans.
We'd probably still lose our best players.
The grounds are boring as there's no new ones to do.
The media coverage would do my head in.
I'd have to listen to the boring plastic bellends at walking talking about "their" club, when what they mean is they've watched a tv programme that showed a club from a city they've never been to and have no connection to, and how "their" club should sign our players.
Less games.
Less competition in games.
Even more boring football as more teams would set up to not lose instead of win.
Sh*t atmosphere at most away games (and most home games).

Spurs came up 76 with us, so aren't actually that far from the same sort of record.

It's interesting if you look at the stats actually, we're 27th in the all time table since football begun (though with fewer seasons than others because we didn't go pro and join the league immediately), and if you look at the modern era of the premier league we're 11th in the all time league table.

But yeah of course if i was in your position i'd do my best to ignore those facts as they don't paint you in a good light.

It's fine though i don't really feel the need to challenge your insecurity, if you want to believe what you want to believe that's fine by me.

Spurs have played almost double your amountof games in the top flight.

I believe the insecurity is with your here, and on this particular issue, is very strong. I've not mentioned my club.

You just need to accept your position in the overall English football structure, ie just another club, and a rather unremarkable one.

For round figures only Arsenal and Liverpool deserve 100% to be in the top flight. Most of the rest struggle to be more than 75%. You can take your raggedy @rse stastistics and stick them where they belong, in a stench ridden Fratton Park toilet.

Didn't arsenal technically get relegated but then reinstated in the top flight based on a technicality.

Just checked they were relegated in 1913 after finishing bottom of the league and spent one seaosn in the 2nd division

Edit to say:

Ah the never relegated thing IS a technicality, it was Woolwich Arsenal who were relegated but when they became just Arsenal (moving to north london) they have never been relegated
