Cricket 2026 County/International Thread 10:53 - Jan 31 with 11205 viewsSuperhoops2808

https://www.fansnetwork.co.uk/

I've started a new thread for the 2026 season, and I've started it now because the T20 World Cup starts a week today. (And in fact 2 months and we will be chatting county cricket red ball)

In a group with Italy, Nepal and Scotland and a pretty solid squad I expect that we will progress beyond the group stage. After that who knows and will depend on fitness. Curran and Salt played very well in the first game warm up game v Sri Lanka but tougher tests are ahead. Anyway, here is the squad for England (albeit still provisional).

Harry Brook (captain), Rehan Ahmed, Jofra Archer, Tom Banton, Jacob Bethell, Jos Buttler, Sam Curran, Liam Dawson, Ben Duckett, Will Jacks, Jamie Overton, Adil Rashid, Phil Salt, Josh Tongue, Luke Wood.

Be relying on Archer to stay fit (as per usual) - But hope that Brook finally stands up as captain, and Banton and Jacks perfom like we know they can at county level. If all that clicks should be a good watch.

I really like Buttler as a player and as a person, you are quite right he is undoubtably a class white ball player but his last 10 innings are 2, 7, 3, 3, 21, 26, 25, 39 and 17. In his last two innings he looked like he had never played cricket before in his life. He is totally out of touch and something needs to change. Perhaps moving him down the order to protect him might help? I am no expert but this cannot continue if we want to win this tournament.

Also, on balance, it should also be pointed out that his opening partner (Salt) apart from one innings has also failed which has not helped.

Certainly an option, worked moving Brook up the order. Flexibility could win us the tournament

Those last 5-6 overs were brilliant to watch.

If we did drop Butler, who would keep wicket? Do we have another keeper in the squad? (genuine question as I don't know)

Has all the makings of a fantastic, double barrelled name….

Up there with Derek Dougan Love, from ‘The Chancer’ fame. Clive Owen from memory.

Banton is automatic choice

Have Jacks open and for those that dont think that Jos should be dropped move him down the order. Jacks has really shone this tournament so get him up the order. Or use Banton in to open as he also does for Somerset.

Lets face it, Somerset are one of the best T20 county sides, so use these players in their right positions.

Really is a shame Jamie Smith managed to play his way out of form through the Ashes so spectacularly just before this tournament. When he's on song, he's be a decent option to both open and keep wicket.

If we drop Buttler, who goes in as wicketkeeper.

But with Salt and Buttler both struggling for form, am i missing something with Ben Duckett consistently only used as drinks carrier, or is he unavailable.

i dont think there will be any changes, but must be massively frustrating for Duckett on the sidelines !!

Even with England playing at their very best - this is an ICC tournament being played in India.

So I think I know what will happen!

Correct

And I also think management are too belligerent to make any changes and the lack of runs at the top of the order will cost us any chance anyway

Anyone know the reason Duckett has not played one single game so far...

At test level yes.

Untried at t20 though in recent times and Buttler and Salt been awful bar one innings for Salt, so by way of your argument, why on earth are they still given chances.

And why is Duckett in the squad then, if he should not be considered at all.

Should have put someone else there, if that's the case.....

Wasn't my argument, just stating why he wasn't being picked. I think if he was in form then they may well have dropped Buttler. But what's the point when he has about 1 run in 6 months? Stick with Buttler, more chance he comes good.

I wouldn't drop Butler, I think he'll top score Thursday and come good. In terms of wicket keeper, we have Salt, Brook and Banton who can all Keep wicket.

Yes i agree.

Like most, somehow i think Buttler will come good, just because of the character and class of the man. Lets hope so.

We need all our players to perform against India as that is about as tough a challenge as there is right now.

S Africa struggling a bit against N Zealand, 101-5 after 14 overs, with all the key batters already back in the hutch. Interesting viewing, think I'll watch this and delay watching the highlights of Wang Chuqin and Lin Yun-Ju hammering smashes at each other in the Singapore Smash men's singles table tennis final.

All change, Jansen hits a 27 ball 50. This could be a real belter of a match.

Finn Allen!

100 off - wait for it - 33 balls! Astonishing!

NZ win by a mere nine wickets.

What an innings from Allen.
Their openers were on a different planet there.

Who knows what will happen tomorrow but India will probably get to the final.

Very pleasant surprise with that performance after getting stuffed by SA earlier in tournament.
We’re lacking in depth & missing some of bigger name players but still finding a way.
Hope another crack at you guys as should’ve won last time up & let slip.
Openers to be at least half as good in final…

Well. We had a good run. No way we chase that score down. Maybe a bit of sliding doors moment, when Brook dropped that catch, but our attack got absolutely taken to bits by a very strong batting line up. Will be a sad watch if we lose wickets early.
