Got to Southampton early today, passing City art gallery, so popped in. My parents are from Manchester so I’ve seen a lot of Lowry pics of places up there that I know, so this one caught my eye. Says the bridge closed in 1977, so before my Saints time but many of you on here must remember it and I thought you might welcome a memory jogger. Interested to hear any stories/memories. Looks like quite a thing. |  |

I only went on it a few times when I was younger as I never had much call to go to the East side of the city before 1977.
I went in one of the Floating Bridges when it became a night club in the early 1980, firstly it was Floaters and then it became Riverside, a club that catered for the Alternative music crowd on a Friday night with DJ Hammy, who is a legend in the city and on Saturdays for a more soul orientated night.
It also hosted a lot of Indie/Alternative bands , who were doing the circuit of venues that held 400 or so.
Had some great nights in there both on Fridays and watching bands |  |

I went on it plenty of times when i a little kid, my old man kept in his fishing boat in a yard next to it.
We still have a laugh about the time we saw a human turd floating by on trip to Woolston and I asked him what was that?

Postscript: Talking to my Dad (90) this evening about seeing this picture, he tells me that as he was leaving his Wedding reception in Salford (1963) soneone said to him “see that man over there, that’s L S Lowry”. He’d apparently been eating in the same hotel.

Thats a good story to be able to tell people and a nice connection to mention in this thread.
The best I can come up with is David Lowery of Californian alternative bands Camper Van Beethoven & Cracker, whom I have seen on a number of occasions on rare trips to England, would often play Pictures Of Matchstick Men as an encore, a song that was a hit in the 1960's for Status Quo in tribute to his almost namesake | |

That’s a great story, I actually have a connection to the floating bridge too. My brothers wife’s grandad was the last captain of the ferry, which always makes me chuckle when people sing about him singing the Woolston ferry song | | | |
