Getting all nostalgic, what’s everyone’s favourite World Cup.
The first one that I can remember was the 82 in Spain and I loved all it. Getting home from primary school to see Bryan Robson score after about 25 seconds against France, Brazil being mesmerizing, their comeback against Russia with two sensational goals, their kits, their cool names, being heartbroken when they got knocked out. Northern Ireland being great underdogs, crazy semi finals and ace Italian celebrations.
It was perfect.
86 was great as was 1990. 94 was crap, 98 was decent, 2002 was enjoyable as I’d moved down here and saw Ingerland support for the first time and it was great being battered in town before the 1 O’Clock news. 2006 should have been a belter but England were last and I don’t really remember too much about it to be honest. 2014 in South Africa wasn’t the best and again, wasn’t particularly memorable. 2018 was very good and was probably the best in the last twenty years. Qatar 2022, I tried but couldn’t get into it.
Will give this year a go but will probably end up watching a lot of You Tube clips on Spain 82 instead. |  | | |  |

Those two Brazilian goals against USSR were ridiculous. That was my first World Cup and that Brazil team could have been remembered for all time if they had given a second thought to defending. Another huge memory is the France v W Germany semi. Next door weren't in to football but they had French exchange students and they came round ours to watch. My old man was never the best host, so he took it in himself to support the Germans (which must have hurt him) and laughed his head off at the French penalty defeat
1990 is probably my favourite as it happened just as I finished my GCSEs, I loved the music scene of that year and I discovered all sorts of new ways to pass the time as I left school so it all fitted in perfectly. However, it was probably a dull tournament (it brought about the back pass rule change two years later) and we just look at England's comparative success. I'm still not over those penalties and thats not the case with subsequent tournaments |  | | |

Exactly the same memories re: 82. Coming home from school and watching England v France. Seeing a Brazil team play like no other team I had every seen and thinking every Brazil team would be like that. Then when they got knocked out by Italy in the typically Brazil manner of trying to win the game when a draw would have advanced them.
Hoping that Keegan would get fit after he slipped in the bath. And him so nearly scoring when he came on as a late sub but we were knocked out despite not losing a game in the tournament or losing a penalty shoot out... |  |

1990 especially if you're Irish..but so many other things stick in the memory, Gazza, Roger Milla, Colombian wild hair , 3 tenors, Toto Schielieza, opening credits with Nesum Dorma gave me goose bumps. Boring final but brilliant tournament, hasn't really been a good one since in my opinion. [Post edited 10 Jun 10:22]

1966 was favourite because England won the trophy.
Fondest memories involving England were beating Argentina with Alf Ramsey calling the dirty two hats animals.
Beating Portugal in the semis or was it the quarters and of course the final win over West Germany with the immortal quote from Kenneth Wolstenholme when Geoff Hurst scored his hat trick,
« There are some people on the pitch, they think it’s all over, it is now » as the ball hit the back of the net.
Other fond memories are watching Beckenbauer, Eusebio, the North Koreans playing Portugal at Goodison and the crowd going bonkers when the underdogs went 3-0 up. The disappointment of seeing Brazil knocked out in the group stage and the unbridled joy of watching the Italians suffer the same fate. It was the season for overripe tomatoes and that’s what they were pelted with when they arrived home.
None of the tournaments since have got me excited as much, just disappointment and resignation. | | | |

The Brazil team in 1970 wasn't too shabby either....Italy taken apart in final...Jairzinho goal at the end...people my age can recite the build up commentary to that one off by heart. | | | |

My first World Cup in 1970 in Mexico was the one that really got me into watching and loving football. It was Just four years after we’d won it and as a young 9 year old kid it all seemed so exciting. England the holders the likes of Bobby Moore and Geoff Hurst on show I was mesmerised by it all. Seeing the magical Brazilians with Pelle, Rivelino, Carlos Alberto and Jairzinho playing was great.
That save by Gordon Banks from Pelle, to this day I’ve never seen a better save.
The Quarter final against West Germany in the searing heat , England 2-0 up but that man Gerd Muller broke our hearts. We lost 3-2 . I was so upset.
Watching the Brazil v Italy final brilliant football, brilliant goals, Brazil 4-1 winners .
That tournament got me hooked on the game and I still love it now and I would still watch saints if they were in the conference . Love it , love the beers with mates, love the away days. |  |

'82 was the first I remember, especially Keegan missing what seemed a simple header at the back post against Spain. The Brazil v Italy game is still one of the best games I've watched, that Brazil team was excellent, Zico, Socrates and Falcao who's celebration when scoring certainly struck a chord with my 7 year old self
"90 was probably my favourite, I was 15, England were very good and I grew up in a town with loads of 2nd generation Italians who always go pretty nuts when the Azzurri do well, there were huge celebrations in Woking when they won in 2006
Went to the 3 England group games in 2006, its 20 years ago today that we played Paraguay in Frankfurt, which was great experience as I'd always wanted to go to a World Cup. Glad I did it when I had the time and money, wouldn't do it now though
I watched the re-run of the '66 final when it was on the other day, probably an unpopular opinion but I was shocked at how poor the standard was |  |

That Germany v France game was a big one for my family. My parents operated a very strict yellow/red card behaviour policy. Yellow card = Pyjamas on, Red Card = Straight to bed.
My two brothers had words just before kick off, my dad wanting to watch the game with kids, gave them both a straight red. I loved it, brilliant game, extra time, penalties, goalkeeper decapitating a player, stayed up way after my bed time.
It formed a big part of my best man speech for my brother 25 years later. | | | |

In 1986 I stole stickers from someone’s drawer at school. I got them home and found most of them were swaps. I felt so guilty but at least I learned that crime doesn’t pay.
That was my first proper World Cup. I remember Lineker scoring loads and everyone hating Diego.
I used to laugh at the names of some of the South Koreans in the Panini sticker album. When you’re 7 something like “Lee Bum Suk” is the funniest thing ever.
1990 was probably my favourite because I was old enough to follow it more closely. The football wasn’t sparkling but there was a lot of drama. I went to Italy for the first time later that summer. I’d just started supporting Saints and they were great in 89-90 so I was really enjoying my football.
I have to say I can’t remember much about any World Cups since. They all blur into one. I went off England at some point in the 90s, possibly because MLT was so poorly treated. |  |

Cha Bum-Kun amused me when I was 11 and still does to this day, I'm 51 now

2006 England were last? They got to the quarter finals but lost on pens against Portugal after Rooney sending off and Becks got injured. Owen got injured earlier in the tourney too.
2010 was South Africa was the worst by far, those friggin vuvuzelas! Lampard ghost goal against Germany.
I generally have enjoyed most world cups (apart from 2010) since 1998 when I was old enough to remember. 2014 was awful in terms of England performance with not getting out of the group with Uruguay/Italy/Costa Rica (luckily I had Glasto to get me over it) [Post edited 12 Jun 21:29]
