There were some encouraging signs of us trying to play football at times during that half.

Fiorentina were not great but we did pretty well holding the ball and playing forward, IMO.

Worryingly neither were due to challenges. Kone just sat down and Madsen seemed to land awkwardly.

Do we sign them fragile or turn them like this?


I'd be interested to know whether most of our more serious injuries occur at home (or at the TSG)? Could it be something to do with our pitch? The curse strikes again - where is that Ghanian witch doctor?

I liked how Madsen, Vale & Chair combined & I thought we played some good football in that half. Burrell also ok on the right wing, but I'm sure he'd be better in the middle than Lloyd.

I thought Kone looked like a hamstring, but it could easily be his knee. Didn't Madsen get a knock while giving away a free kick?

First half thoughts
Charles - not much he could do with the goal - good first save but could not stop follow up. Distribution is excellent aside from one ball into Ellerslie Road stand.
Mbengue - played a solid first half
Dunne - Same - solid game so far
Edwards - played well bringing the ball out of defence up to the half way line and beyond
Kemper looks decent and scored a good goal
Chair - been ok - one shot wide but has passed well
Smyth - one shot wide - has been ok and won the penalty
Madsen - was excellent until he went off injured after around 35 minutes scoring a penalty - his passing is critical for us
Vale - has covered ground and passed the ball well - seems to play well with Madsen
Kone - only lasted five minutes before going to ground with no one near him - a worry
Burrell - playing out wide - done ok - but would probably be more effective up the middle now Kone is off
subs
Lloyd - puts himself about and missed one reasonable chance from edge of box - where is Kolli?
Varane - he is no Madsen

Overall a positive first half aside from the worrying two injuries to two of our most important players

I think Varane's done well since replacing Nico. Looking to go forward more than usual but he's being given a fair amount of time and space on the ball, which is unlikely to be the case once the season starts.
