As someone mentioned Tonda seems to have changed his tactics slightly in that we are driving forward less and are spending more minutes playing it around the back. Some people are calling it a return to Russel Martin tactics, but when we do break through the lines we are fairly deadly.
Around 70 minutes in the Swansea game we were giving the ball away in our own half and the crowd were screaming to get it up the pitch, but later Tonda and Azaz both said that we have to stick with that tactic.

Yes I’m not sure why we’re starting to play like this but I have noticed that Peretz has gone from a very confident keeper who now seems very nervous when playing around at the back. I can’t stand it it puts me on edge and I’m expecting a howler from Peretz at any minute and it wouldn’t be his fault as he’s suddenly be asked to play that way. |  |

The reason we do it is supposedly to avoid what happened at Lincoln where we hoofed the ball up field and it kept coming back. I get that, but I'm still not convinced and I think for a lot of Saints fans, the experience of watching the Russ M team take this tactic to stupid extremes, has made us more nervous of it than other fan bases would be. That's why it gets booed.
For me, I don't think we've got the platers to do this well. Peretz, Wood and Kev are never far from a mistake when they're playing tippy tappy. But at least with Tonda, it isn't a matter of religion. So long as we still hoof the ball when we need to then I can live with it. | | | |

Its the Pep curse, encouraging pressure then breaking thelines with quick incisive passes and pace
every manager thinks he can do it but not everyone has the players too
We invite far too much pressure and dont have the players to play throigh it, or the pace, i think its a dangerous game
I find Peretz very frustrating, we NEVER seem to break quickly when he claims the ball, he always looks to release it then never does, we have had an issue breaking quickly for years | | | |

Totally agree, we've lost THB's passing ability which was a real asset last season and started many of our attacks
Wood's through ball io Bree in the build up to the goal against Swansea was excellent, but that was a rarity as he always looks very uncomfortable when he has the ball at his feet and passing out from the back.

I'm with 1teem on this, and am always nervous at goal kicks.
When it works it's great, when it nearly works I'm sh1tting myself and we get a recovery, but when it doesn't work and the passing is not as accurate as it should be and the ball goes straight to an opponent there is generally no time to recover and 1 down |  |

I personally think Tonda has got this part of his game more or less right, he's not wedded to playing around the back at all costs like Martin, waiting for the inevitable mistake, Tonda uses it in a more methodical way. I'm not saying we're perfect but we're pretty good, and better than any team I've seen this season.
For me, it's great to see us take control of a game for periods when the opposition are relentlessly attacking us, it takes the sting out of their attacks as it did against Bristol City.
Also it knackers fast attacking teams like Bristol and Swansea leaving us more attacking possibilities later in the game. If we constantly went toe to toe anything could happen, so I think he's got the balance right.
We played out too much at the end of the Swansea game and made some mistakes that luckily didn't hurt us, and the team looked tired which made it even more dangerous, so is was good to see them hoofing the ball at the end.
THB was good at starting an attack, but I feel Shlottenbeck can also thread a good through pass. | |
