I see he's now condemned the violence etc - maybe he's realised there have been people killed. But how can you believe anything he says is with sincerity? Not saying he wanted people to go out and murder people but it may be an interesting few weeks for him now
I think he has suddenly realised the gravity of the situation and with people resigning from his administration and leaving him to his fate he is now trying a bit of damage limitation.
Whether that lets him get away with it I don't know, but I think those in power in the USA will prefer to let this fade quietly into history rather than see it be recorded as a president being impeached or removed from the office

The worry is the following he has created. Watching the interviews last night they seemed to be proud of what they had done and achieved and gave no signs of giving in now
Trump will surely have been advised to make that statement but as you say, when the likes of Pence and others very close to him immediately going against him will have made him realise he is not the Almighty that he thinks he is
Interesting the Iranian (I think) TV was their president or whatever his title is was highlighting the fall of Western democracy. It certainly doesn't help that philosophy

You're probably right in your second para. But they will also have in mind that if they can impeach him quickly, it will stop him pardoning himself, friends and friends, so that the prosecutors can go after him in a more leisurely manner as part of the overall review of what happened.
Also, now that a policeman has died, I get the impression that the more and more people are thinking that enough it enough. I think we will find out today whether there will be another impeachment.

Apparently he can pardon himself of federal crimes but not against charges from any individual state That could be interesting

Has he created that following or just enabled them? I think they have always been there on what is a divisive polarised country despite the greatest country in the world narrative that is constantly churned out.

That's right and there's a big tax case against him in New York.
But the potential charge here is sedition or seditious conspiracy and he's been doing what he's been doing nationwide so would guess it would need to be federal.
There's a lot of uncertainty about whether he can pardon himself, so at the very least they could try to prosecute him and the issue of the validity of any pardon would have to be dealt with presumably by the Supreme Court ultimately.
On a lighter note, the front page of the The Daily Start today has a picture of him and the question: 'Why am I such a massive bellend?' Gets to the point that one!
He summoned the mob to Washington, telling then is was "going to be wild". He sent out his idiot lawyer and son to wind up the crowd suggesting the use of force, then told them that they had been cheated, and said that "WE are going to walk to the Capitol and let our feelings be known." Even after one person was shot, and 3 others taken to hospital, he only said, "We understand your pain, time to go home, we love you."
Nobody believes this mealy mouthed chastisement is genuine, least of all him and his family, and he need not think that pardoning himself is going to work. He has already talked of maybe having to leave the country, because he knows that there will be retribution for his misdemeanours once out of office. Biden's scathing denunctiation is only the begining of it.

Did you see Don Jr riling up the crowd it was almost comical if it hadn't been so unhinged and scary He has done all he said he would and next he will pardon himself, unless the Senate can have him removed first, today is a big day
What scares me the most is how similar these events have been to the black and white newsreels we used to see from the 1930’s and the rise of far right factions in Europe. I used to think thank goodness this will never happen again, yet here we are, nearly a quarter of the way through the 21st century and it is all over our TV screens again and from the US of all places. It isn’t just the attempted coup but the fact that so many millions of US citizens think that it is ok.

Timothy Snyder, speaking on C4 news (from about 4mins here), explains what Trump is doing and has no hesitancy about referring to what is happening as fascism and all about race.
And for anyone who wants to denounce him as a nutcase leftist he wrote 'Bloodlands' one of the best (and most harrowing) recent books on the horrors of both Nazism and Stalinism, so (a) he knows exactly what he is talking about and (b) he is no communist.
I've read that he is currently focusing on giving himself a presidential pardon for any crimes he's committed so he can avoid future court cases. As it's never been done by a president for himself before, there are questions about whether it's legally possible.
Perhaps it was his intention all along to create such a volatile situation that he could use a last minute agreement to a peaceful handover of power as a bargaining chip to obtain that pardon.

I think there is a danger of giving Trump too much credit for clever strategic thinking.
I personally don't think he's that bright. He relies a lot on winging things and then blustering/bullying his way through them. In a lot of what he does - look at all those bankruptcies - there is a final denouement which brings him down.

Not going to the inauguration Cowardly narcissistic pr1ck
Probably for the best. It's going to be a massive 'good riddance to the fat f*ck' party - who wants him there putting a downer on the whole thing.
He may even have relocated to Moscow by then.
many reports coming out that one of those who died, tasered himself in the balls and died of a heart attack
As for Trump, shows a total lack of class being first outgoing president in nearly 150 years not to attend the inauguration, but from what we’ve seen from him recently no surprise

Death by accidental ball tasering. Shouldn't laugh but what with four seasons total landscaping, Guilliani's hair dye and the drunk witness they put up, there has been a large element of slapstick associated with this coup attempt.

Prior to Nixon's resignation, the Supreme Court assessed that it is not legally possible to be a judge of your own actions, so therefore it would not be possible for Nixon to self pardon. Nixon's resignation meant that this point was not tested in law. It is true that the USA constitution does not preclude the use of self pardons, as it does not refer to self pardons at all. If Trump tries it, it will be extremely unlikely that the Supreme Court would not find in favour of a legal challenge.
The terms of donating to Trumps war chest after the election were that he could spend it however he sees fit. Expect him to use it to defend himself to the hilt and or pay off the Trump Inc debts so that he cannot be attacked on that front for being in hock to dodgy overseas interests.

Yes, he’s done well with his grafting to fill his pockets but having lost the Senate, Biden could theoretically ‚pack‘ the Supreme Court with judges he knows would not allow a self-pardon.
I think he’s f*cked unless he and his disgusting brood do a deal to leave the country.
He wouldn’t be the first corrupt leader to see out his final days in a Paris apartment.
