I couldn’t agree more mate, there are only two local derbies in the UK which have these measures in place and they have killed it for us fans, when will it end? COYS!
| Less Tickets For Away Fans At South Coast Derby on 07:35 - Aug 5 with 3920 views | FredTheLeg | Not sure I agree with the following line: "for as long as most sets of fans could remember, the only games between the clubs that had been free of major trouble had been the four fixtures played using the Bubble, the two back in 2011 & the two last season." No major trouble at the St Mary's league games in 2003 & 2004. Nor at the Fratton league game in 2005. Can't remember the FA Cup game in 2005 that well. The worst incident of major trouble was Fratton 2004 and that didn't involve both sets of fans so could easily happen under bubble conditions. Even the 2019 game I wouldn't class as major trouble. Mostly pantomime. | | | |

The major talking point last night was that many people are scared to go because of the trouble, you might call the 2019 cup game a pantomime, but there were plenty of issues pre game on Goldsmith Avenue with a group of Saints fans walking down to the ground Not every game saw massive punch ups as did the 1984 cup tie down there, or the 1987 League game that saw one of their fans slashed with a stanley knife or for that matter the League cup game in 2003 that saw a pitched battle in St Mary's street. But all of the fixtures had their issues, the two Premier League games at Fratton were well policed and stopped major disorder, but anyone who went by train to either of those games know that it was not a pleasant experience, kettled in by the police, Pompey fans hurling abuse and worse from all sides and a slow walk down the road getting to the ground well after kick off. If anyone thinks you could go down there and walk down the street wearing a Saints shirt without abuse, they are living in cloud cuckoo land. The bubble is draconian, but at the moment it is needed. 1. To keep everyone safe 2. To get everyone down there quickly 3. To be efficient in the policing, it takes less police manpower, which means it probably costs less money From a personal point of view, when I went down there on the train it was even more draconian, kettled in missing kick offs, being held in for an hour afterwards, basically effectively in a police bubble for around 6 hours from getting to Southampton central station at 6pm for the Carabao Cup game in 2019 until arriving back there around midnight, two hours after the game had finished.

Many people are scared to go but the games this century prior to the bubble always sold out? I don't think anyone is suggesting you could walk down Goldsmith Avenue in a Saints shirt without getting abuse. Who has said anything remotely like that? Seems a bit of a strawman to me. That's par for the course for basically every derby in the country yet very few have restrictions like this imposed. If they can do it without a bubble in the NE with much bigger crowds they can do it here. If people don't enjoy the experience getting the train then the coach or driving is still an option. For what it's worth I got back from 2019 much earlier than midnight so not sure how you got back so late. I honestly find it astonishing that any Saints fan can support these measures. This ain't the 80s anymore and treating football fans like sub human scum shouldn't be tolerated. [Post edited 5 Aug 9:18]

The thing I still don’t get is the police manage to cope with games like Rangers v Celtic, Liverpool v Everton, Liverpool v Man United and even the tasty London derbies with one really tasty one coming up in the Championship this season when West Ham face Millwall home and away. None of these games to my knowledge have measures in place similar to a full bubble where away fans can’t make their own way to the ground so why can’t Saints v Pompey and Cardiff v Swansea be the same? It all comes down to how the logistics of controlling both sets of fans can be implemented and it shouldn’t be impossible in 2026 to achieve that. COYS!

Spot on Nick. I just don’t understand why so many fans get their knickers in a bunch about the bubble. Over a season thousands of our fans get on coaches at ridiculously early times, to travel all over the country to support the team, watch the game and return at equally crazy times. Yet asked to do the same thing to travel the short distance to Portsmouth and back, half the fan base goes into meltdown. The bubble works, it’s here to stay as long as we have fixtures against Portsmouth, get used to it, stop moaning or don’t go, after all attendance isn’t compulsory is it ? [Post edited 5 Aug 9:48]

Maybe I don't want to have to leave my house earlier for a game 20 miles away than I would for one over 100 miles away? Maybe I don't think it's fair as a law abiding person to have draconian restrictions placed on my movements just for attending a football match? You're right we don't have to go and I probably won't. Sadly my seat will remain empty. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

I really don't know how you post this stuff with a straight face, you have been active in things like the FSA and fans rights as long as i've known you Nick but you support a ridiculously draconian solution that criminalises us before a game is even played. It's just making a mountain out of a molehill, you say about trouble in 84, that's 42 years ago the vast majority of our away support wouldn't even have been born then, same with 87 which 39 years ago. Even 2003 is almost a quarter of a century ago now. It's just not true that there's been any significant trouble in the last few meetings, and as for people being scared does that mean that Millwall, Cardiff, Birmingham or any number of others should be bubble games? Plus like others have mentioned if people are scared to get the train they can just not get the train and get the club coach instead. It's utter bullsh*t and shows the disregard Hampshire police and the clubs hold for the fans, like others have said we are one of only two games in the country who have to put up with this sh*t, are we really that special? Because i don't believe that's true. Anyway i'll make my point by not going, but i feel disappointed in our fan representatives who didn't make the case that fans aren't criminals and this is unjustified and over the top
| Less Tickets For Away Fans At South Coast Derby on 10:06 - Aug 5 with 3623 views | PatfromPoole | There's probably more chance of trouble this Saturday. Quite a few different parts of London which the dibble may be wanting to keep an eye on. Personally I think they should put more resource into this Saturday, and divert some away from the derby games, which seem to me to be ridiculously over-policed given the presence of the bubble. | |

There will be zero trouble on saturday, the game has changed and large scale disorder doesn't really happen anymore, even when the fans meet both sets are more likely to jump up and down like zebedee than do anything these days. Yes you will always get a small amount of trouble makers, but you get worse on a friday/saturday night in town than you do at the vast majority of football games

I am telling it like it is, it is a draconian situation that is needed, as I said in 2019, going by train was even more draconian. The older games are mentioned to give context, there are those my age in both cities who have children and grandkids who were brought up by them to hate Southampton, there are 80 year olds who were Skinheads when there was trouble at friendlies in the late 60's, it is a culture of hatred that has now been bred into both sides for the best part of 60 years, it is more than just football. If we go back to the last 5 meetings, you are right little trouble as 4 of them were bubbles, the one that wasn't saw a Southampton group go down there early doors and disorder on Goldsmith Avenue, I wasn't there but I have seen the footage including the police horse getting punched. It was draconian after the game as well when we were held in for about 45 minutes, a slow walk back to the station with missiles being thrown, admittedly not many, but that is no consolation if you were hit by one. Cardiff and Swansea is a bubble game, the Villa/Birmingham game is a same City rivalry as is Liverpool/Everton, Utd/City etc, in those games there is not the cultural animosity, as both sets of fans live next to each other and work and socialise, but there is still trouble. Newcastle/Sunderland has been a bubble and effectively still is given that those who travel by train are policed to a station and then marched to the ground by the police London is different, again not the cultural divides and people coming from everywhere I stick up for the bubble because at present I don't see any other option, going by train is actually more draconian than going by coach, try getting off the train and walking out of Fratton Station, they are looking to pick off stragglers, I know people who have tried it. The mood at the meeting from everyone was that no one liked it but there was no other choice. Being blunt Southampton has no fan representatives, everyone likes to have their say , but no one actually likes to get up and do anything about it. The old FAB has been disbanded and a new one is being set up, it will probably be no better than the old one. This is not aimed at you as you arent living locally , but at our fanbase in general, it is not pro active it is reactive, everyone is now having a moan about the bubble, but who is , actually doing anything to change it, who has applied to join the new FAB, who is forming a supporters association etc. Pompey had about 6 organisations represented, we had none, aside from me who could be said to be representing the viewpoints I see on here, the other 5 were just fans invited along, they had no agenda other than there own, the main points brought up by others were about disabled access, fair points, but not the major ones. Again to be blunt, personal view is that I don't think we are being treated like criminals, I felt more like a criminal going down there on the train and being kettled in both ways from the station and being delayed on the train so the police could clear the streets and get us there 20 minutes into the game. It should also be pointed out that part of the bubble is aimed at stopping tickets being bought by lets say non combatants and passed on to those who want to cause trouble. Despite the bubble there was trouble last year with all the seats being ripped up and thrown, something started by our fans so im told, hence both teams get 200 less tickets this year, It's hard to argue against the bubble when that is happening Anyway not going is not making a point to anyone, it is the same as not voting in an election. Perhaps form a committee, drive down to Portsmouth and stand outside the Fratton End with a banner saying " Southampton Fans Against The Bubble" I am sure that you will soon be joined by like minded Pompey fans and it will kick off the resistance (LOL I am of course joking we all know what the outcome would be)

Out of 9,000 Skates buying tickets at £10 a pop, there are likely to be a fair few idiots about on Saturday. If it was 9,000 of our lot, I would agree with you.

It rather depends on an individual’s definition of draconian. Living in China and having different views to the government’s leading to imprisonment, or in this country arrested for holding a sign related to the current situation in Gazza, perhaps ? Being asked to voluntarily travel on a bus to and from Portsmouth once a year with the opportunity to decline without punishment, perhaps not ? Each to their own I suppose.

| Less Tickets For Away Fans At South Coast Derby on 11:41 - Aug 5 with 3434 views | PatfromPoole | My main issue with the bubble is that it means shelling out for a hotel in Southampton the night before the game, as you can't get a train early enough from Bumpkin-land on a Sunday morning. Though that is of course my choice (or fault) that I would prefer to have a drink on the day of the game. As it turned out, a few of our lot did this and we had a decent night out in Southampton on the Saturday night; it was quite a good way to dampen the pre-match nerves, which I always get at these games. The rest of the bubble doesn't upset me too much. It is a balls-ache missing a large part of the first-half if there is no bubble and you catch the train. | |

One of our lot did apply to the FAB and was rejected, the club don't want normal fans like us on the FAB they want yes people and sanitised fans, they see us as a problem they'd rather not have, in fact i know for certain from people in the club that when the Itchen North was at it's height it was referred to inside the club as "a necessary evil". As for living outside the city now i'm the only one of my group that does, everyone else is in the city and hates the bubble with a passion. I also don't buy the need for it, and haven't for years, I was at most of those games you mention (not 84 sadly), and the policing even in the 90s was very, very different. For both alan knights testimonial and the game in 96 at ours there was virtually no policing of note, certainly nothing in comparison to later train journeys, and to compare them to recent trips by train is frankly nonsense. It's like comparing seated stadiums to old terraces. As for the 2019 the horse being punched was well away from goldsmith avenue, and could still happen with a bubble, proximity to saints fans had nothing to do with it. Yes a train did go down early but there was very little trouble - other than one lad breaking the cordon, running into theirs scattering them and losing his trainers before getting back into the cordon - and after the game i don't remember a single thing being thrown, in fact i commented to Wints at the time it was the easiest walk i'd ever done from Fratton to the station. We are not in the 80s anymore and the only reason this much fuss is made is because the media (and some fans on both sides) overplay this game.

Why was their no trouble walking back to the station in 2019. I would say because we were held in for 45 minutes, before a long slow walk back to the station surrounded by police, given that there were around 800-1000 fans being walked back there werent many missiles thrown, but just because you didnt see one, doesnt mean it didn't happen given the numbers. Contrast that with those who went by coach, who were kept in 45 minutes and then back on their coaches 50 yards from the ground and home before we had even got on the train. Thankfully trouble has subsided at games, but it is still there at certain clubs even ours.

| Less Tickets For Away Fans At South Coast Derby on 09:36 - Aug 5 by CARDIFFSAINT | The thing I still don’t get is the police manage to cope with games like Rangers v Celtic, Liverpool v Everton, Liverpool v Man United and even the tasty London derbies with one really tasty one coming up in the Championship this season when West Ham face Millwall home and away. COYS! |
Cardiff Swansea will be a Bubble like Saints Pompey. I went to the Old Den Millwall with a mate from Barton Peveril coll who was West Ham in 1979, told him to keep his mouth shut as we were in Millwall end. This will be a bubble game for sure, and difficult to police this season. Guessing Wolves v West Brom and Burnley Blackburn will keep the boys in blue busy

But you were saying there was trouble on the walk back in 2019 and that justifies it? And what's the difference between being held in for 45 mins then a walk to the station compared to be cramped onto buses and driven back slowly? Oh and as for the lack of trouble, well we beat them 4-0 and loads of theirs left early, it pissed it down with rain so people didn't loiter, there was a decent police presence (though i'm not convinced it was smaller than the bubble) and it's not the 1980's anymore I normally agree with you on most stuff nick but on this mush you're being ridiculous, surely the start point should be personal choice, for those scared take the club coaches that'll go anyway, for those that want the train take the train. If you're worried about kick off times get the bus that get there on time. If you want a laugh with you mates get the train. A bubble isn't needed and criminalises us for no reason

| Less Tickets For Away Fans At South Coast Derby on 13:19 - Aug 5 by hedgeend61 | I first went to Fratton in 76 just before the Cup final age 14 with our uncle in the Fratton end as there was no real segreation and pay on the day, wearing red and white scarfs we soon mover round to the other end Pompey fans weren't happy when we scored late to relegate them Did anyone else go? you'd need to be old |
Yes, I was there and given that fact it’s fair to say that there are a lot more days behind me than in front. I recollect that some of the first team regulars had miss behaved before the match and Lawrie dropped them as a punishment. Like a lot of local derbies it was an awful game and accordingly I left with about five minutes to play. As I started my walk back to the station I heard a roar after we scored ( Channon ? ) so another evening wasted. My receding memory recalls that as the train left it was pelted with bricks from disgruntled skates.

1. I didn't say there was trouble on the walk back only the odd missile and insult thrown, the difference between train & coach was that the train got back at after midnight(if my memory is correct) & the coaches about 30-45 minutes earlier. The trouble was before the game 2. After the game saw little trouble because of the result, that is true, last night the Police Game Commander said when asked by me, that there were less police needed for a bubble game and that more police were deployed in 2019 than last season. 3. Disagreeing with each other doesn't change friendships, I didnt agree with all the things that the police or club said, but someone in the audience said that people had personal choice they could either go or not. If the police said yes you can make your own way there but we won't be providing any sort of escort to and from the train station, that would probably put a lot of people off going for sure. I take the personal choice point, but the fact is that if we follow football clubs we don't have personal choice, we can't have a beer watching the game for instance, we get held in when we want to leave the ground sometimes, the police decree that a train is dry and you cant drink on it, there is actually little personal choice in going to a football match. Yes it's a better laugh on the train, but only because there are so many police kettling you in that you can't be got at, it wouldnt be a laugh otherwise. There are pros & cons for the bubble, the seat throwing after the game in January won't have helped the cause for those who say the bubble isnt needed.

| Less Tickets For Away Fans At South Coast Derby on 15:23 - Aug 5 with 3110 views | Southamptonfan | There are reasons why we have the bubble. Although I don't particularly like it, I understand why. It's a way for the police to keep everybody safe, without too many flashpoints. The police know where we all are, so it makes it easier for them. I can understand that they don't want violence or too much hassle. They can plan the day with certainty (i.e. they know a group of fans won't be meeting at Fareham station for example, so don't need to plan for possible trouble there or any other other station on the way). Yes, it does sanitise things, but I understand why we have it. However, it's over the top. I really hope we don't need to be on coaches at 7am again. That really is not necessary. Coaches could easily be escorted in en masse from 9am not 7am! Yes, we leave for other away games at that time, but we don't get to the ground 3 hours before kick off with nothing to do! You can't walk round the ground or go.to the pub. 3 hours sat in a seat with nothing to do is over the top and unnecessary. And we were asked to be on the coach half an hour before departure. So again, just sat on the coach with no food and drink looking at a wall in Britannia Road, just waiting around! When we got to Fratton, there was just one.burger van outside with massive queues. Remember some people hadn't eaten or drank for about 5 hours. At least have more options available, if you can't eat or drink on the coach. I know that not being able to have a flask of coffee with me, (which I normally do.for away games on the coach) , a sandwich and a packet of crisps, was an unnecessary restriction on me as a human being i thought. Thr throwing of seats, again, I am.not sure how having 100 less each side will stop that. There were some.good throwers from what I can see looking at the footage! It just means even.less.fans get to enjoy the derby. [Post edited 5 Aug 15:33]
