| Southampton At Bristol Rovers 1978 09:35 - Jan 28 with 1036 views | SaintNick | Not a good day in the FA Cup in 1978's 4th round on this day. Paul Randall scored twice to put us out of the cup in a game that saw 12,000 Saints fans in attendance and a pitch invasion from a section of them to try and get the game stopped. Ironically 3 years ago I played for Eastleigh in the Walking Football FA Cup at Weston Super Mare, we went out 2-0, both scored by a now 64/65 year old Paul Randall. | |

I recall the semi riot afterwards and getting charged by a police horse…

It was embarrassing. Southampton at Nottingham Forest the year before was much better. We always had a massive away following at FA Cup games in those days. [Post edited 28 Jan 11:10]

I was one of the twelve thousand. If anybody thinks we have had some bad away days lately they should have been with us. As I recall:- The weather was atrocious, cold and rainy with an away end with no roof. We put out a full strength team on a pitch which was like a ploughed field which negated any skill advantage. The two goals scored by Randall were the highlight of his career and he quickly faded into obscurity. To say the least the police weren’t pleased to see us. A throughly depressing F A Cup exit only surpassed by Adrian Heath’s last gasp goal when we played Everton at Highbury.

As a Scouser, Paul Randall will probably remember his last minute equaliser v Liverpool and his goal at Old Trafford in the 1980-81 season more. Scoring 2 goals against another Second Division team wouldn't have been such a big deal for him. He was scoring goals for fun every week in the late 70s. [Post edited 28 Jan 12:21]

Possibly, but neither were winning goals against a team that a couple of seasons previously had won the F A Cup when winning it really mattered.

Shocking weather, shocking game. I think the location of the old ground can be seen from the main road into Bristol now, | | | | Login to get fewer ads
