Have we ever beaten the Skates before with 10 men? 13:53 - Oct 12 with 579 viewsPatfromPoole

This game will be talked about for many a year for that reason, I suspect.

Poll: If we were today re-instated to the play-off final, would you go on Saturday?

I read on SW that we beat them 2-1 in 1974 and had Jim Steele sent off
The more senior contributors to this forum can hopefully tell me if this is correct

Yes we beat Pompey 2-1 in September 1974 with both goals from Peter Osgood eitherside ofa penalty equaliser from Saints legend Ron Davies.

Jim Steele was sent off in the 81stminute shortly after Osgoods winner.

I remember that a Saints fan invaded the pitch to remonstrate with the ref at one point as he was seen to be so biased against us.

I think the referee that day was Clive Thomas who was controversial at the time and he went on to referee the 1976 FA Cup final

In the 1978 World Cup he disallowed a winning goal for Brazil in the final minute of thegame by blowing for full time just seconds before it was headed home by Zico

Thanks for confirming
That game was 4 days after I was born
We beat Notts County 1-0 in the league cup on the day I was born, I bought the match programme on eBay

Clive f*cking Thomas the sheep shagger from Tonypandy ...WAC..

Back then, we denizens of the Milton Road End would buy a programme and take up our position.

First order of business was to check the team sheet and the Ref...If Jimmy Melia was playing and Thomas was the ref we knew our chances of winning were in the same category as the chance we could get to jiggle Raquel Welch's boobs.

The 78 WC final was classic Clive "look at me" Thomas, I'm the referee and a star! A little bit like Mike Dean of recent times
CT was however strictly correct as the time up occurred as the corner was taken to the second and he turned round to face the centre circle as the ball was kicked and blew the whistle
Sometimes wish refs nowadays would do the same although it seems to be to wait until the passage of play is over despite being beyond the 90 minutes plus official added on time with no reason for increasing that (as yesterday)

The thing is no one knows the exact second so as there is always time wasting going on in injury time, so it would be best to either end the game before a corner or afterwards, not as the ball is travelling

That's the common sense viewpoint. Thomas always had to be the centre of attention and he would have known of the controversy his decision would have, and did, create
