Southampton City Centre 14:39 - Aug 24 with 1739 viewsSaintNick

Sat in Southampton City Centre and had a cup of tea for the first time in about 2 years and it is changing dramatically in terms of the shops etc

This is normal throughout the years the type of shop has been ever changing back in the 1960's & 70's you had food shops on the high street and it has evolved since

Hopefully it will now see the rise of specialist shops as rents have to lower to attract new occupants

I find it all very interesting. I think city centres are slowly adapting, or people are adapting to what is on offer. I guess there will always be smaller supermarkets in the centre for those wanting to grab a few things, but it has certainly changed a lot.

In Winchester, there is a small Sainsburys but you couldn't do your big shop there anymore. Also, there is nowhere to buy a pair of trainers and no male clothes shops other than Primark or the higher end red trouser outlets in the square. But you can still buy a CD, unlike Southampton!

Think it would benefit cities of the large vacant Debenhams buildings that most cities have now were given over to independent stalls selling local goods and units like you'd find in The Laines in Brighton selling bric a brac

Don't know how the number of coffee shops are supported though ffs

Whenever I drive through Shirley in the day it always seems busy, lots of people out and about, a bit of a throwback to older times.

The pubs, at least the outdoor front sections, always seem well populated, even at midday in Shirley as well.

CD? What are they??

Seriously, i blöody miss good old record / music shops. I know there is Vinilo and a few others in the area but boy do i miss these establishments the most. Always used to love a day out in the big smoke as a nipper spending the days in Tower Records, Virgin, Our Price, HMV when you could procure weird and wonderful rare 'import' items from Japan etc.

If i had a choice of going back to the Dell and watching Saints / football (pre PL destruction) or old music stores it would be a tough, tough decision.

A long time ago now, but does anyone recall a shop in St Marys Street that used to sell dodgy bootleg cassettes / recordings from places such as the Joiners etc??

I remember the shop that sold the bootleg cassettes, bought a few myself from there, was it called Weasels records or something like that, it was on the same side of the road as the Kingsland Tavern I think

I remember Henrys Records ,don't know about anything dodgy.
I count myself very lucky to have spent so much time going to the Dell, Top Rank, Pier, Lido etc.
Southampton had so much Character in those days.

Yeah deffo on the same side of the road as the Tavern like you say. Not sure if that (Weazels) was the name of not though to be honest.

Always preferred HMV as well when it was down below the Bargate along Hanover Buildings. Great store in them days.

Have almost considered crunching the numbers on a vinyl / music store to see if ig would earn a modest living or not, but probably could never afford to take it on. If i won money i would do it as a hobby though.

Used to do the same go up to Tower etc in London for the day, listen to albums on the headphones in the shops, then read the album sleeves on the train home. Good little buzz that was as a kid.

HMV was top range expensive from memory but there was Wax Records which was either the one opposie C&A or Plummers and wasn't there a small place upstairs by the Warrens where the busses were near Above Bar?

Incredible news to hear Nick hasn't had a cup of tea in two years.
