Brexit was important for Putin to weaken the EU and pave the way for the reestablishment of the Eastern Bloc, and that's why he financed it. With the UK in it, the EU was a power to be reckoned with, which stood between Russia and the the USA and was almost their equal. Russia would not have risked invading Ukraine or the surrounding countries but now the balance of power has been tipped in its favour. If it could prise just one more country away from the EU, it would undoubtedly invade and reestablish control over Eastern Europe. It's certainly poised to do so.

I watched an interview with him today on CNN and he basically said EU and NATO bullying won't be accepted and he will defend as he sees fit the rights of Russians living in Ukraine...
He fully knows that there will be zero retaliation to every little incremental step he takes into Eastern Europe.
He's exactly where he wants to be...not great for those former soviet countries that turned to the west.

Let's see shall we. Russia's is not a super power economically. The Soviet Union was brought down by it trying to keep up with Reagan's 'star wars' plans and then bankrupting itself. And tbh both Biden and Johnson could do with making themselves look strong on the world stage. Let's see what sanctions are imposed and what Putin's response is. It seems he doesn't have the resources to occupy the whole of the Ukraine, so he doesn't hold all the cards.
It wouldnt surprise me at all that Putin and his acolytes were happy when the Uk left the EU to provide some instability within the bloc.
I think he was probably more pleased when Trump was in power and threatened to withdraw support from NATO.
Without US power, European countries are weakened and prone to buying by Russia which has spent a good deal of their money on upping their manpower and weaponary.
All western European countries may now have to spend more on defence which will mean finances diverted from other parts of the economy,
