Can we change our losing mentality? 15:31 - Nov 20 with 1310 viewsfelly1

Will Nathan Jones be able to inspire a change in our fortunes?
Currently the players look a beaten lot, the fans are going into the SMS resigned to yet more disappointment.
Will one signing change things?
Or is our malaise more deep-rooted and complex and will be a too big a challenge to change and we're destined for the Championship?
I think we need to bring in at least two more attackers to give us a chance.
Kiefer Moore cost Bournemouth 5 million and has 3 goals in 3 games. He'll never be prolific but he has that big game presence that lots of our players lack.
Our scouting system has mainly failed to bring in these kind of players.
I think this is our biggest failure as a club.

Attitude is all. If you don't think you can be beaten then you probably won't be and the converse is true.
Putting a side out that thinks it is beaten already is a self -fulfilling prophesy. If NJ can break that mindset, he is half way there because the players have enough talent to stay in the premiership (just,) but what they don't have is the belief that they can do so.

I think the attitude is mostly OK.
Just uncoaching the defensive mindset and the sideways/back passing, slow build up from the back/eventually losing the ball crap would surely help.
The strikers appeared to be so shocked at actually getting the ball at their feet against Liverpool there was some hasty trigger pulling....

The piece from the Luton contact that Nick posted on here recently suggested that NJ's first move will be to get in a tall striker, who can win things in the air.

That could potentially improve things. Whenever Shane Long came on as a sub, our ability to win balls in the air increased considerably. All sorts of things would become possible for our existing strikers if they had a 'big man' alongside them.

Poll: Should we try to replace Selles for the final seven games?

Thats hit the nail on the head, we have virtually no aerial Prescence in the box, last season we still had Bednarek who could pop up from a corner and get a goal or two and the previous season, Ings could time a good header even Vestergaard headed a couple.

It was starting to show last year when Broja had no aerial prescence at all

But last now we dont have Bednarek, we have no one who is a danger from set pieces and we wonder why JWP is not so effective this season.

None of our central defenders have scored for us this season or ever for that matter and more worryingly is the fact that Salisu, Lyanco & Kotchap only have one goal each to their name in League football, that is a combined total of 3 goals between them in 249 appearances, roughly speaking they have shared the number of games at around 80 each, so their average is about the same a goal every 83 games.

There is one ray of light, Duje Caleta-car has scored 9 goals in 194 appearances, his goal every 21 games is prolific compared to his team mates

I think a feature of Ralph's team was the almost pathological desire for ball retention.
OK it looks good for the stats but results in players that don't want to take a chance to create something so we saw a lot of probing and going backwards and sideways. I expect RH would dig out the player that tries an ambitious pass.
To score goals you have to take risks with the ball in the final third and we rarely if ever do that.

Hopefully Jones will give the players the message that we keep the ball at the back and in midfield but it's ok to try and be creative when we get forward.

Agreed.
Our strikers must get so frustrated because
there is nothing creative coming from midfield.
JWP is the worst culprit he just plays safe all the time, he needs to get his head up & look to play the ball forward, his first thought is sideways or backwards.
When we get either KWP or Tino back to play right back then that should release AMN to play alongside RL, if think that would be a good central midfield combo & add a bit of vision/ creativity.

About the same as most of the rest of the midfield and attack.
