As voted for by Muddy Stilettos. Petersfield is in a great location if you like walking.

For their beauty, I'd probably choose East Meon and Rockbourne, which both have lots of good walking country around them..

Anywhere with easy access to the South Downs Way is fine by me and, of course, the winner, Winchester, is at the western end of it. I've walked the South Downs Way both ways and although the best sections are in Sussex, the stretch leading into/out of Winchester is one of the best parts in Hampshire. I've also walked the length of the Solent Way and a few places along that, like Keyhaven, Bucklers Hard, Hook and Emsworth, are good if you like coastal scenery

A nice place in the New Forest would be my choice if I had one.

Agree with you there Dirk. I also like stretches of the River Test, especially down Chilbolton, Long Parish, Wherwell area. The Mayfly pub by the river near Stockton is a nice setting on a warm summers evening, as is the Waterwitch pub at Odiham.

The problem with Hampshire is that many locals became out-priced by the spill over from London. My parents became quite bitter as what they saw as the Cockney invaders changing the environment, the language, accents, etc. Winchester is a classic example of a lovely city that is way out of the price range for most locals - even indeed there are any locals anymore. That said, the issue is repeated across the south and southwest.

But, there are many beautiful locations in Hampshire and I am proud of my county - even, dare I say it, bits of Portsmouth (by the waterside and view across the Solent to the Isle of Wight - which used to be regarded as part of Hampshire as was Bournemouth and Christchurch when I was a child)!!!!!!

I have lived in East Yorkshire now for 20 years. There are some similarities in the scenery but Hampshire will always be home.

Of course, John Petersfield Westwood and his parents were 'Cockney invaders' although most people appreciated his parents' bookshop if not their son.

I agree with you about Wherwell and Chilbolton. Mottisfont is another good location.

Yorkshire is great walking country. I've had walking holidays in both the Yorkshire Dales and the North York Moors. I'd probably move there myself but my wife is too attached to our home area

Hampshire is not as attractive as it was. There has been far too much housing development eating up the countryside, and the traffic here is some of the worst in the country, outside of London. Driving in Yorkshire is a breeze, in comparison.

Ask Darren Reddick (Planet Rock presenter) of his thoughts on Basingstoke

I'll give you a clue - he was there last weekend and said "Avoid"

Emsworth has the most pubs of any village in Britain, great coastal paths behind it. I live in Petersfield it has some great walks, our dogs love it.

The perfect night out in Basingstoke begins with walking to the train station and getting the train to Winchester, it ends with getting last train back and walking home.
