Salaries, quality of player and the market 14:00 - Sep 6 with 1170 viewssaint901

There seems to be an increasingly vocal theme emerging on these threads which (in my view) colours the views of many when considering whether a new recruit or an old hand is actually adding value to the team.

The message is that some players will join our club, get paid what will often be paid 10X the average UK salary (circa £32k) - or more - but do so to enrich themselves and not increase the quality of our team. Worse, the fact that somebody is seen to be making the most of their talents and take an opportunity to earn the market rate for the short period in their life when they can, is somehow unfair or immoral or hypocritical.

Whilst some of this may be driven by a personal agenda, players do not set the market rate of salary in their chosen industry. In their world, player salaries are a trade off between what the clubs will pay and what the agents want.

What a club will pay depends on their income which in turn depends on their profile and brand,. What an agent wants will (eventually) be driven by what the club will pay.

There is a supply and demand issue here because players good enough to play even at our level are not that common (less than 1,000 players in the Champ on pro contracts perhaps. That's 0.00013% of the population of Europe. That's about 5x the chance of winning the lottery.

So why do we - the fans - think that a player becoming wealthy is somehow ripping us off?

I've worked and work with players current and now retired. I can, hand on heart, say that the majority are comfortable in terms of their economic situation. A small percentage are very wealthy because they used their money wisely. A bigger percentage however are often facing some heavy tax bills, have no assets and no significant income or pension.

My message here is that there is no correlation between a player taking a market rate of salary and improving our team.

Let’s face for the past few seasons saints have ended up paying for players who are stealing a living.

I don’t see any correlation on this site and what you are suggesting. Personally I know I dear what any of them get paid . I just think they are all sh it!

It's only ripping us off if they don't work hard (and that goes for the CEO down to the tea lady). Some players simply don't seem to be trying hard enough, hence the fans get pissed off with them.

Possibly fresh evidence that footballers are often not the brightest when it comes to financial affairs.

Expect to see him eating kangaroo anus in the jungle in a couple of months….

I’ve worked in football for the past eight years and spent time on a lot of the clubs up and down the country. My overall view of players and salaries is the short term thinking/planning of their finances and future from 18 year olds to players coming to the end of their careers.

Players are, by and large, Molly-coddled (is that a word), with all of their needs taken career of as long as they perform for that club. The lack of career planning is limited, most players don’t do anything with their vast amount of free time and then call on the PFA if and when they fall on hard times/are looking for options. The PFA for their worth are most reactive than proactive.

There are exceptions obviously.

I thought I’d read it all on here, but this takes the top 3 biscuit.

Here’s an idea if they spunk their fortune that they should have invested, get off your arse and get a job.
Work like the rest of us have to to pay the bills.

Ralphie and Nath got it sussed!!

We thought that we had the answers, It was the questions we had wrong.

'So why do we - the fans - think that a player becoming wealthy is somehow ripping us off?'

I think generally this is not true of the majority of our fans.

Most wouldn't care how much they were earning as long as they put in a shift and produce what they are paid for.
