On another thread Pat from Poole has been waxing lyrical about Taylor Harwood Bellis and expressed the opinion that he was surprised that Burnley didn't snap him up, I tend to agree with him on this and I think it deserves its own thread.

Im surprised that Burnley didn't sign THB, but sometimes players are excellent in the championship and not so good when it comes to the top flight.

In 1977/78 Mike Pickering joined from Barnsley and then played 41 out of the 42 games in the then Division 2, missing only the final game against Spurs at the Dell

He had formed a solid partnership with Chris Nicholl who himself played 39 out of the 42, ironically in the 4 games they missed between them, 3 of them were clean sheets.

However back in the top flight Pickering would play in the opening 3-1 defeat at Norwich and pay the price he was dropped and Malcolm Waldron came in, he played only twice more, both 2-1 defeats and was sold to 3rd division Sheffield Wednesday in October 1978 barely a year after he had arrived at the Dell.

Likewise when were promoted back to the top flight in 2011/12, Jos Hooiveld joined on the last day of the August transfer window and would play virtually all of the remaining games in the Championship 39 in total and scored 7 goals.

In the Premier League he was not up to scratch and although he would play most of the early games, after the signing of Maya Yoshida he was no longer first choice and he played more than he perhaps would have if Jose Fonte hadn't missed 17 games through injury etc.

In 2013/14 he would play just 3 Premier League games and in 2014/15 he would join Norwich on loan followed by Millwall in the 2nd half of the season, he left Saints in the summer of 2015

England under 21’s captain and eventually when he steps up to The Premier League will get a full international call up.

There is a massive gap in class between The Premier League and The Championship as the current PL table shows.
If we go up and are to survive some reinforcements of quality will be needed that is certain.

<Prepares to be told I’m wrong>

WE MARCH ON

We thought that we had the answers, It was the questions we had wrong.

I said on the other thread that I think he’s the leader that our back 4 have been crying out for ever since Fonte left.

I’m sure if we did go up he would be able to step up. Unlike the other 3 centre backs we have.

I agree.

I think he is improving the players around him, particularly Bednarek and Bazunu.

Haven’t Saints got an agreement that he will sign for 20 million if they get promoted? I wouldn’t mind him coming to Everton when Branthwaite leaves in the summer to either City or United.

I agree, I think Harwood Bellis is very composed & easy to play
with.
It's not a coincidence that both Bednarek & Holgate look better playing alongside
HB.
It's important to develop partnerships in the team, particularly between ctr backs & goalkeeper.
Game time in a settled side us critical, WS & FD are improving weekly by playing together & are starting to look a good partnership.
Just need to find best pairing up front, perhaps RS will help that situation.

Me too.

He never stops talking to those around him. Not what you’d expect from someone so young and inexperienced, but it’s great to see.

We’ll see whether he can step up but he looks very very good to me.

I believe so.

It’s the main reason I want us to go up.

I think he’s really excellent, albeit obviously pretty much unproven at Prem level.

So what happens to Jack Stephens, the so called leader that Russell Martin was praising so highly as a leader and pivotal part of our defence ?

I can't see him getting back in and will be consigned to the bench, but will play a role given likely suspensions through yellow cards..

Back on topic, THB has done very well so far and still getting better with each game,
