Saints greatest players - according to GiveMeSport 18:01 - Jan 31 with 1008 viewsLondonSaint76

GiveMeSport have put out two lists of what they think are our greatest players and greatest Academy players - what do you think?
Anyone missing?
Anyone who should not be there?
Bale a higher rated Academy product than Le Tiss?

I would always put Le Tissier top of the list as he brought the most joy to the fans over the years than any of those other players. But I know this list just says "best players", regardless of who they played for.

Shearer was a great player, but most of his career wasn't at Saints!

The Wallace brothers arn't on the list. Wayne Bridge as well.

Did Benali come through the academy? He would be on my list but he wasn't a great player! My list would be biased with loyal players on etc.

Danny Wallace should be on any list of our greatest players, but not the other two, Rodney was pretty good but bailed out after only a couple of seasons as a first team regular

In terms of what he achieved as a team leader with Saints, Lille, Braga and Portugal, José Fonte is one of the greatest. He organised a defence, read a game, and guided young players better than any captain we've ever had. I wonder how many more goals we'd have conceded and whether we'd have done anywhere near as well in the league without all those interceptions he made? Puel leaving him out of the Europa League games certainly cost us.

2 promotions and 4 consecutive top 8 finishes with Saints, Ligue 1 title with Lille, League Cup with Braga, 50 caps, European Championship and Nations League winner with Portugal; he's a great example to all the youngsters he plays with and he's still the captain of a Portuguese Primeira Liga club now at the age of 42. 746 first team appearances, 30 in the Champions League & Europa League, 288 for Saints, and still going strong.

We've not had many players who've won a European Championship as a Saints player nor a captain who's led us for so many years as a top 8 team.

I was at Millwall when he made his debut for us in league 1
Couldn't believe we'd managed to convince a player of his quality to drop down a division, he just glided through that game

Whilst I appreciate that there may have been reasons behind the scenes at the time, I thought it was a real shame that he played no part in the Europa League games.
I felt quite sad seeing him doing the warm down on the pitch at the San Siro after the match having taken no part in it

Puel made some big mistakes. Substituting Gabbiadini at Wembley, when he was having the game of his life, cost us our 2nd major trophy. Who knows what might have happened if Fonte had been in our Europe League team? We'd at least have got past the group stage. He captained Lille through to the knock out stages of both the Champions League and Europa League.

At least he got his glory at the San Siro in the end. He captained his Lille team to a 3-0 victory over AC Milan there. Ironically, Milan's No. 9 was Ibrahimović.
