 | News Comment | Portsmyth Or Portsmouth Innit ? Take Our M27 Derby Weekend Quiz by Bowlercow at 20:39:30
Nick there is a more modern argument between Southampton and poppy dockers In the early 1970s ship owners wanted to take the chanel island ferries away from Portsmouth and bring them to Southampton As Michael Foot han introduced the National Dock Labour Scheme Southampton dockers said no and under the scheme they had to stay in Pompey The only regular ferry service from Southampton at that time was to Santader and when the employers wanted to take it to Pompey they said yes That caused a lot of animosity |

I read a posting that mentioned " loyalty ", a word that had disappeared in the Saints vocabulary after MLT retired. So will THB wait until the end of the season, or has he already accepted we don't stand a chance of a quick return to the Prem. and will go now. The answer to that one will be clear after Feb.2 in which case we will need to sign a new CB from somewhere PDQ before the window shuts. The fact that the interest comes from Burnley (who like Saints) have twice yo-yo'd between the divisions in the last 4 years. In their first promotion Burnley had both THB and Nathan Tella on loan. Tella was their top scorer by a country mile, and THB showed up well, but Burnley then insisted they would only pay 9 million for Tella (Saints wanted 14), and so they let both return to their clubs. We later sold Tella to Germany (for a reported 22 mill.) and then we bought in THB in at the same time. Both these mistakes led to Burnley's instant relegation in the first season. Burnley may have learned the lesson, because if we do let THB go, we must be sure to get a good deal in the process. |

THB is a prime example of how out club has faded. We have taken the England U21 captain who has a senior cap and gradually erroded his confidence and performances buit trying to make him fit ours system. We have some great players at the club but we soarly miss leadership on and off the pitch. I have no issues with Jack Stephens as he should and probably is good enough for this division b ut he is knowheer near the leadershio we need. In the same way that we have needed a senior forward since Ings left we have needed a senior defender and midfielder. Past thier prime options clearly havent worked will Walcott , Lallana and now Romeu. THB would have florished next to a compitant experience pro. He still could if we ever got one in. I cant see that happeneing and I imagine THB cant and will soon enough be looking to rescue his career. |

I would have been ok with selling THB this window on basis we had Ronnie Edwards there and waiting to play in his position. Now we've sold him for a bargain price will look ridiculous if we sell THB - even if its for £20m - and then have to spend £10m+ on someone worse than Edwards... |

THB has been the best performing CB this season. So unless we have someone better in our sights to replace him, selling THB could be the difference between looking up or down for what's left of this season. I would hope that THB and another developing talent (i.e. Not Wood or Stephens) would build a partnership. So probably Quarshie right now and maybe Sanda for next season, who for some reason Eckert is currently blind to. So on that basis, with Sorts Republic, I expect we'll sell THB and Sanda before next season and go with Wood and Stephens as our starting CBs. |

I've always thought that THB is a decent player who would have blossomed in a better side than ours (for the last two seasons). As for recovering our outlay of £20m for him, I think in today's mad world, we should be asking for £30M. It would then be another example of our not having to be in the EPL to make a profit for the shareholders, which many suspect is Sport Republic's main objective. |

Nick, I think you will find that the current transfer window ends on the 2nd of February ? As for us playing in The Premier League any time soon. On the basis of recent performances I sincerely hope not because it would turn out worse than our last pathetic effort. We need to avoid relegation this season and try and stabilise, hopefully with new owners. |

Played well for us the last time we were in the Championship but poorly since then. Let's face it , less CB's, less ability to play 5 at the back. Possibly, a win win. |

Re Ings: he didn't know how things would play out when he left. Easy for us to talk about chasing money, but do we know that we would have done anything different than Ings given the incentives? |

Were we really watching the same game? Yes H1 we did pretty well, but let’s be honest Leo’s shot was going nowhere but took a very fortunate deflection… and thanks very much. But H2 I thought was no better than 50/50 in terms of better performance, and probably a lot worse, and were it not for Lady Luck and the Blades not having their shooting boots on we could well have been two or three down. And even if they missed a few sitters, my God so did we - Aziz, AA and Leo at least a couple each… Look, I am not trying to do a downer on the team. And a win is a (very welcome) win. But is that really anything like required playoff, let alone automatic promotion, form? No prizes for guessing what I think… |

Agree with much of the above. Just to add that as well as the formation and personnel changes a noticeable difference was an improved attitude to get stuck in. It was Ross Stewart who set the tone by hassling the Utd CBs. The others seemed to respond and both Jander and Downes had their best games for a while. Whether that was due to the changes on the pitch or in response to the “home truths” expressed after the Hull game we won’t know but it was welcome and will be needed for our next match. |

Pluses where the clean sheet,3 points and a back 4 I enjoyed the link up between Wellington and Scienza It looks like a pairing to develop.Other than that the defence, the m/f and the forward line where like 3 separate units Nobody had a poor game but nobody stood out for more than the odd move I hope it has given confidence to the team for Sunday but to me they didn't look cocky enough |

One swallow doesn't make a summer is the old adage but, this win was huge for morale and in readiness for Sunday. The back four with Jelert and Wellington both contributing positively (in fact, I thought Wellington was MoM) was much more effective than the three and wingbacks. Downes benefitted from being freed up to attack in this system and Stewart showed how much we've been missing a useful target man. Having listed the plusses I should mention that Sheff Utd looked a really weak side and, until we made changes towards the end and they added Bamford and Ings, they offered very little in attack. Although our play wasn't that joined up we did create a fair few chances but, spurned them (especially Fellows who needs to keep his head down). This meant we had to rely on our GK to rescue three points. A nod to Peretz for his save from Bamford. It's a start but, we'll see if the players really want it come Sunday. |

Well a back 4. Finally this Manager has seen the light and long may it continue. What a difference proper defenders like Wellington make. His selection has been long verdure. Having a target man like Stewart will always gives team outlets and change our predictable pattern of play. In the championship a team needs all players showing energy and grit and although Azaz is creative his work rate is poor and don’t start me off with the miss which would have given us breathing space. I like a good number of supporters have been very negative of late which is born out of total frustration. I sincerely hope this is a turning point. Finally SR make a couple of signings that could make a difference and I don’t mean peanut money!! |

More than enough rain before the start turned accurate passing into a lottery, but we kept a clean sheet in the nd. A "flukey" goal from Scienza was enough to get the points. Had we had VAR we might well have had a penalty for the "double fouling" on Fellows. Whatever the tactical advantage of playing 3 at the back, I agree with others (above) in that I prefer playing 4 at the back - at least you know who should be where . Good to see Stewart back on the pitch -even for 60 mins- as his height gives us a target man who can shoot, or hold up the ball when necessary. |

There really aren't that many sides that can play with a back 5. You need specialist players to do it in particular very fast aggressive wing backs. We don't have that. A back 4 is completely familiar to all players. They all know their roles inside out and that adds extra confidence from not having to worry too much about your team mates going out of position. Superficially I think coaches are attracted to it because in transition the wing backs go up the pitch and that in theory creates an extra attacker. However a) we don't have specialist wingbacks who can put that amount of coverage in and b) our CB's and CDM's never radiate confidence that they know their own roles, which leads to the inevitable howlers The sooner this failed experiment is cancelled the better. Now we have shown we can win with a back 4, let's stick with that. COYR |
