Saints At Tottenham Hotspur The Verdict
Monday, 9th May 2016 09:12

Saints recorded a glorious win at White Hart Lane to jump into sixth place and officially become the second best team in the the second half of the Premier League season.

It was a red hot atmosphere at White Hart Lane as Spurs fans turned up to acclaim their team and found that Saints were not sticking to the script.

In the first 25 minutes Tottenham threatened to blow Saints out of the water with a scintillating display of one touch passing and all out attacking football with Son Heung-min scoring a superb goal that left Fraser Forster having to pay to get back in the ground.
But that was the only goal that Spurs managed in that opening burst and it was a pace that they could not keep up and Saints slowly but surely dug themselves back into the match and Steven Davis brought them level on the half hour.

The Saints supporters were superb, driving their side on and showing Spurs fans who really owns Oh When The Saints Go Marching In, indeed the home fans only had one rendition of their version with Saints fans out singing them and perhaps shaming them into singing a song of their own for a change.

Even after the equaliser though it was always going to be tough and a case of getting behind the ball, digging in and taking our chances whenever they came our way, Spurs had 70% possession and 20 shots exactly double our total, but they only got 6 on target and Fraser Forster made several decent stops to make sure the home side didn't add to their goals total.

Saints only had 2 shots on target, both from Steven Davis and both were goals, but if Davis was the goal scoring hero this was truly game that was won by team work and hard work at that.

At times it seemed that Saints were playing 12 men with the referee determined to give Spurs all the help he could, every split decision went to the home side and Saints couldn't make a tackle without getting penalised.

But Saints dug in deeper with every player working as hard as the next man to make sure we won the game and kept our Europa League hopes alive, this being the case it is hard to name a man of the match, every player ran his socks off and Ronald Koeman made the right substitutions at the right moments to keep the momentum going.

There was a scare in added time but again Fraser Forster made himself big and saved the day.

A great day out for the traveling Saints supporters and a great result which shows that not only have Saints been better than Spurs in the second half of the season, but they can look towards next season with confidence, Ronald Koeman has built a great squad with a great spirit in it, we marched on at White Hart Land and we will march on going forward.

This jumps us to sixth, we now need to look towards Upton Park and Anfield in the next two days, if both teams drop points then sixth place is in our hands on the final day.

a great, really surprising, result! As you say, now we hope either one of west ham and Liverpool drop points mid-week. We should, in theory, crush Palace, so the Europa spot is looking a real possibility. COYR!

Both Liverpool & West Ham dropping points would be superb, defeats for both even better

5 hours on a coach, 2 hours of non-stop singing (it felt like a home game), a great defensive performance with 2 clinically taken goals and then highlights on Match of the Day after a couple of drinks in the evening. Honestly, does it get any better than that?

P.S. Spurs goal should have been offside!

The referee was awful

Brilliant all round. I hope both do drop points in midweek because I refuse to cheer on either Man U or Lpool in a cup final.

Lord Lucan's P.S. point is an interesting one. Would that goal have been scored if Kane had have been miles away from the action? If the answer is 'no' then he was 'active' and interfering with play or whatever the terminology is now. Everybody on the pitch bar the scorer was certainly affected by his presence...

Tremendous win and brilliant day out.

I just hate the fact that the media don't give Saints the credit they deserve. It is always Spurs had an off day (no they had 20 shots), they miss Alli and Dembele (everyone has injuries ans suspensions to deal with, get over it) and my favourite, they were feeling the affects of Monday night v Chelsea (the 9 yellow card dirty gits had a whole week to recover and the fact they were 2 up and fvcked both that game and the league up is only down to the team and the manager !!)

My Spurs mate has been experiencing problems with his phone, strangely enough, since Monday night !!!

His response to me this morning was they were unlucky, but at least secured a Top 4 finish, which was their aim for this season !! I just said that having had Pochettino as manager, we learned that goals win games, not possession and chances !! 2 points out of 9 when it mattered most, proves you bottled it big time !! ;-)

Always great to beat Spurs! A very good performance against, admittedly, a lacklustre and knackered Spurs. Davis was excellent again and is improving with age.

I thought we rode our luck in the first half a bit, and for me Forster was at fault for the first goal. He's a great shot-stopper but is so slow (and reluctant) off his line. He looked like he was running in slow motion - there's no way Son should've got to the ball first. Also, I have no idea what Fonte was doing when he was disposed by Kane on the by-line.
Sorry to bring up the negatives but this is the stuff we need to eradicate to become a top 4 team.

Anyway, what a great way to end an excellent week

Saints should already have been 1 up by the time spurs scored and that was purely a defensive howler. Not like Dusan to miss that pass. Great performance by Saints, keeping it tight then breaking with pace. I remember spurs having a lot of the ball but no real chances, a real top team performance by everybody.

As Ron said wryly a month ago, all we can do is win all our remaining matches and we should be in with chance of Europe. We can do nothing about other teams and other results.

So far we have stuck to plan. Realistically, it is improbable that all our dice will turn up as a six.
