Van Dijk Makes Positive Statement ! But Liverpool Fans Still Salivate
Tuesday, 7th Nov 2017 10:02

Virgil Van Dijk has spoken about his current situation at St Mary's but Liverpool fan web sites still see it as a come and get me statement !

Virgil Van Dijk has said some positive things about Saints, he is quotes as saying.

“Firstly, I don’t think it’s appropriate to comment on anything that happened before.

“But I am giving 100 per cent for the club. I work hard every day, I help my team-mates, I’m positive and I want to win every game."

"I am happy and that’s the most important thing so we will just see what happens."

Now this seems an innocuos statement from the Dutchman but it seems Liverpool supporters do not see it as a positive one towards Southampton, but are making much of the final words "Just see what happens"

That is enough for them to read that as "come and get me please"

Empire of the Kop website, in fairness seeminly a bastion of what they would call on Merseyside "Wooliness" headlines with "Virgil Van Dijk Changes Tact In Attempt To Force Liverpool Move"

That is straw clutching of the highest order, although to be fair judging by this websites comments over the past six months it would not surprise me to read "Virgil Van Dijk Changes Milkman/Paperboy/Underpants/TV Channels* In An Attempt To Force Liverpool Move
(* delete as appropriate)

From a Saints perspective this is the first time Van Dijk has said anything vaguely positive about Southampton Football Club in a very long time, if we had a website called Empire Of The Northam, it would probably see this as so positive that it would say

"Virgil Van Dijk Changes Tact In Order To Force Lifetime Contract At Southampton And The Stadium To Have Its Name Changed To The Virgil Van Dijk Superdrome"

But we are not like that down here, we merely see it for what it is, a positive statement from a player who is accepting his current situation (at last) is the last words mean nothing, they could mean he is waiting for Barcelona, they could mean he wants to go to Liverpool, but more likely it is "I am a contracted player to Southampton Football Club, it is their decision what happens"

Empire Of The Kop and other Liverpool websites including those of their reginal newspapers would be well advised to read Van Dijk's words , take them literally and wait to see what happens, they should have learned by now that the bullying tactics don't work, the more they demand we let him go, the more we dig our heels in and are backed into a corner.

Virgil Van Dijk could be leaving in January, but if Liverpool want to have any chance of landing him they need to keep quiet, stop arrogantly assuming that they can do what they want and then and only then will they stand a chance of us backing down from our current stance.

The fact is that we have cover for him at centre back. We need the money to buy another striker and a decent keeper, so we will choose to sell him. He knows that.

We've won at Anfield before...and the thought of beating a team that includes some Ex-Saints ,,,and maybe have van Dijk head the winning goal is an interesting prospect.

We'd have a much better Prem. placing if we'd only managed to score at least one goal in some of this seasons games, so let's see our strikers finally get some form and score a goal or two. Surely this goal drought can't go on forever?

The thought of Shane Long finishing his career without scoring another goal, or Boufal waiting another year to score his next is just too depressing.

I take the statement with a complete pinch of salt. He will go tomorrow if he gets the chance and all he is doing is playing to the audience and trying (belatedly) to be the diplomat. Unless he says he has no intention of moving/leaving Southampton either now or next summer, then I do not see a change of heart. His statement is meaningless.

I think he might be suggesting that the Captaincy should be given back to him. Obviously, he sees flaws in our attackers that could be corrected during play by firing rockets up their backsides during a match and get them performing. Neither Davis nor Yoshida seem able to do that and he probably realises that. He may be right too.

Of course it is also possible that he was forced under duress and through torture to read a prepared press release for the club...

His well written speech means nothing - he will jump ship for any club in the top 6 at the drop of a hat if he could. We could do with the money to buy a big striker and a pacey one to replace Mane and Pelle.

International break yet again, I fear. Expect even more meaningless football drivel that normal. "Obviously, he sees flaws in our attackers" - yep, and in the next interview he'll tell us the Pope is a Catholic...

I feel he is already leaving, hence the I am happy statement, as he knows his future has been sorted and is just paying lip service till January.

Guarantee he will be here until next Summer. I don't suppose there is one Southampton player who would not leave right now if the right opportunity presented itself so don't be too harsh on VVD.

I was very pleased with the stance we took. Very pleased but has it really been worth the hassle ?would we have conceded anymore with Hoedt and Yoshida ? . The right offer in Jan and the right players coming in and I would prob sell but please still to anyone other than Liverpool.

of course there is the scenario that it was only the Star/ Mirror / Mail /Guardian etc who were giving out transfer talk. After his infamous meeting with Klopp, the transfer request may have been just "dipping his toe in the water " , if ...(as someone suggested) no club had actually put in a bid, then he 'd be daft to continue screaming "gimme a transfer ".... if no-one (other than Liverpool) was really interested.
