Red Lion on Newgate which was knocked down for the shopping centre. 1s 10d for a pint of mild.
When I came back after uni I used to drink seven nights a week in the Healey Hotel when Donald Hayes was the landlord.
Robinson’s mixed and good company.

I remember Donald Hayes very well. He gave off a sort of " Basil Fawlty " type of image but when you got know him he was ok.

Can I just ask where The Brunswick was?

When I was your age, I used to enjoy the odd game of tennis. Or was it golf?

Pub names have always held a fascination for me

Just googled Brunswick and it comes from the German town we 'Anglicised' as Brunswick - meaning "Bruno's town" - and now known as Braunschweig. So how did it end up as a pub name?

I ventured into a pub in Mossley recently, the Tollemache Arms, which is apparently named after a family in Suffolk who still hold land there, owned by the Baron of Tollemache. I mean, what the suffolk?

Hare and Hounds, Bury Road.

Oulder Hill 6th Form were not the clientele some regulars (in there and on this forum) approved of.

What year was it when you started in the Hare?

My first pint was in the Hare & Hounds and regular was the Hare also, in the Lorraine period when it was "open all hours".

I actually applied for a job working on the bar there when I was 17, we'd been drinking in there for a year or so regularly; she leant over the bar and whispered " it's one thing you lot drinking here at your age, but don't push your luck - working here till you're 18".

I think that the Brunswick has a royal connection following the Hanoverian succession; I believe one of Queen Victoria’s family held the title Duke of Brunswick.
Other similar pub names were the Prince Albert, the Duke of Clarence, the Princess Royal, the George and the Dagmar.
Don’t ask me about the derivation of the Bishop Blaize or the Bonnie Dundee though!
