Pound climbs to €1.20 13:44 - Feb 21 with 13286 viewsloftboy

Good time to start getting your holiday money together, last year when I went to Rhodes it was almost parity.

But my pint of Mythos on holiday is going to effectively be 20% cheaper than last year which is all that matters 🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺

Not factually correct. The exchange rate is at basically the same level year on year. Also, if you go back to the period pre referendum, the pound is significantly weaker against the euro

I’m not sure what you’re basing your projections on, but I’m going to assume it’s not a phd in economics. Anyone projecting future exchange rates here is guessing

If you’re trying to save 20% on your holiday, I suggest you buy a cheaper brand of beer

The holiday is already paid for I’m talking about the cost of a pint which in our hotel is €3. So last year I got near parity on my spending money which meant the pint cost me a touch under £3 at the current rate would be about £2.70 thus saving me approximately %20

Pound tanked against the Aus dollar after the referendum and has yet to recover. The Aus dollar itself is at its lowest level v the USD in many years and yet still the rate is below two AUD to the pound. Long term it has always been well above $2 and was even $3 in the early 2000s.

I have a pension fund in the UK I want to move out here at some point and the rubbish exchange rate, compounded by brexit, is delaying this.

By 2030 you wont be able to find anyone who will admit to voting remain. It will be like those who wanted to join the Eurozone .

This time though its all there online ......

Isn't this all a bit silly? Sterling is still performing considerably worse against all major currencies than it was prior to the referendum, so I'm not sure exactly what this proves?

We've now left the EU, and although I think that will have all sorts of detrimental repercussions for us and Europe as a whole, it's happened now, so obviously I hope for the best and want my country to prosper. I don't personally know anyone who voted remain who doesn't want that to be the case.

If people are gonna post "Told you so" messages every time there's some positive economic news, are you happy for Remainers to spend the rest of their lives posting similar messages every time Sterling slips, growth slows, the deficit widens, we fail to sign trade deals or sign deals on unfavourable terms?

I don't remember any groundswell of support for us joining the Euro, so other than Dyson, I can't think of anyone who wanted in and has since changed their mind. I'll be delighted if 3-5-10 years from now, us leaving the EU appears to have been a masterstroke, but I certainly won't be denying that I voted to remain.

Well, that's a depressing prospect. As is premature gloating because £ isn't quite as sh it against the € at the moment as it's been since the referendum. I'm not confident about our immediate prospects and I feel our global standing/influence is diminished, but I have absolutely hated how divisive the whole affair has been, so for me, the sooner we stop viewing our country in terms of 'Remainers' and 'Brexiteers', the better.

PS. I reserve the right to think "Well, that was fu cking inevitable" with every bit of bad news, but will keep that to myself!

People that voted to leave have endured 3 years of "despite Brexit" being added on to every report of investment into the UK or full employment . I dont expect that to stop until it becomes blindingly obvious that we have done the right thing .

Its a failing project , they are already scrapping about having to increase their contributions . Varankar "useful idiot in chief" is offski . ,its "three wheels on my wagon" stuff .

Your last paragraph makes my point , there is not many online records of pro euro supporters so they have walked away whistling .. not this time . I think their judgement is flawed and will be easily available for all to see.

All of the financial indicators that you mention rise and fall for lots of reasons, the current virus for example , the proof will be how we do against the EU 27 that remain .

Both sides engage in the same behavior

When suitable, both sides attribute positive or negative economic indicators to Brexit. When its not suitable, they attribute it to some external factor like global macroeconomic trends, coronavirus, trade war, etc.

Not sure my last paragraph proves anything - I genuinely can’t remember there ever bring a clamour for us to adopt the Euro. That’s not revisionism as most people I ever discussed it with (a) didn’t feel qualified to hold a strong opinion either way, and (b) there was less than 0% chance of Labour or the Tories pushing it. Therefore the only person who springs to mind for changing his position is Dyson. Whether we win or lose economically, I think we’ll lose out in other unquantifiable respects, so should people still be banging on about this in 15 years, I’ll happily say I voted remain. Not being a fortune teller, and with no means of knowing what Brexit would look like, I voted in what I believed was the UK’s best interests. No need for shame or embarrassment there.

The last three years of Brexit have been utterly depressing - and now that it’s happened, life will be beyond tedious if we keep at this bollocks every time sterling moves 2 cents against the Euro in either direction.

FWIW, comparing the current performance of GBP v EUR is I think a bit like watching Arsenal v Everton last Sunday and imagining that it was in some way relevant to what's going on at the top of the Prem. However one team performed against the other, it's two clubs whose best days are behind them, and who are dropping further behind the real pacesetters with every day that passes.

Regards the impact of Brexit, well if it was so easy to prove that it would be a winner for the UK, the proof would have been hung on the front pages of the Fail and the Express on a daily basis. Truth is, the winners and losers from Brexit will only become apparent over the medium to long term. It won't stop people having their opinions in the meantime, and it won't be determined by single events like currency movements, but by statistical analysis of long term social and economic trends. So anyone sitting at their computer thinking they've got a definitive answer right now is just kidding themselves.

For the record, I was a remainer, but like most others here, I've no desire to see the UK go down the toilet just so I can say I was right.

If my career has taught me anything, it’s that currency forecasts are as reliable as palm reading and water divining. Nobody knows anything. A friend of mine worked for a financial spread betting company. If a punter lumped on equities, bonds or gold, they checked if they should hedge the loss, but they never worried about FX. 70% of bets lost money.

There was always going to be a squabble over the EU budget, with or without UK contributions. Countries that have benefited over the previous 7 years aren't going to want to reduce/reverse the benefits. Nor, are the net contributors keen to increase when they see so many beneficiary countries growing economically.
Varadkar lost the Irish GE due to Irish domestic issues - not his stance over Brexit.
There's no doubt that the UK economy has performed better than expected since 2016, especially the unemployment rate. But growth is anemic (also in EU), productivity is poor and, relatively, getting worse. Business investment has fallen. The last 2 are probably related.
The full effects of quitting the EU are unlikely to be revealed as dramatic shocks. Even Honda closing Swindon barely caused a ripple. However, as a Remainer, I think there will be slow, steady decline in the UK economy - relative to the rest of the EU. It was economics that was my main reason for voting Remain. And, if the economy doesn't work, you don't have the monies to invest in public services.
Short term movements in the currency do not affect many people. Unless you earn in £ and spend in Euros (like me) or your income is £ related (my pension). If the £/Euro rate was the same as on 22 June 2016, I'd be 100 Euros per month better off.
