I think it's because those teachers who are in high risk categories or who have coronavirus in their family are teaching their lessons via video link from home and people who are doing manual jobs probably don't consider working from home as real work. I just looked up my area's local secondary school website and the occupations listed as key workers who can still send their children to school seem to cover the majority of parents, even lorry drivers so if OS had any children, they'd be at school today:
"Education and childcare
This includes nursery and teaching staff, social workers and those specialist education professionals who must remain active during the COVID-19 response to deliver this approach.
Key public services
This includes those essential to the running of the justice system, religious staff, charities and workers delivering key frontline services, those responsible for the management of the deceased, and journalists and broadcasters who are providing public service broadcasting.
Local and national government
This only includes those administrative occupations essential to the effective delivery of the COVID-19 response or delivering essential public services such as the payment of benefits, including in government agencies and arm’s length bodies.

There certainly seems to be real hatred of teachers from a few of the Daily Mail readers on here. Have they been conducting some sort of campaign against them recently?

Yes they should make all teachers and kids wear face masks until a vaccine is found , if not close all the schools until further notice. Parents who can't work due to childcare issues should retrain as home schoolers and be paid an allowance. |  |

This is a fair point. But I suppose you have to consider that our wonderful nurses, doctors and emergency services are absolutely essential. They can't work from home.
Teachers, who can still teach via video link from home, probably aren't absolutely essential. You also have to take into account that parents especially of 11 to 16 year olds, won't want to put their child in a class of 30 others. This is arguably an unnecessary mix of people. Children can still learn from home.
But this slating of teachers, is just so wrong. My children have had very hard working, caring, passionate teachers who ring in the evening, send extra work by email etc etc. I know some in the family who work day, evenings and weekends.
There is also a shortage so why is that? Why don't people want to do the job?
Plus, don't forget, that not all teachers agree with the unions. When they went on strike as called for by unions, some teachers still went into work. [Post edited 14 May 2020 16:06]

Fair points, but...
Having serious questions about why teachers are pushing back - "do not engage with the govt". - when others are not!
This is whilst other govt workers are in the work space and some will have no choice but flounce 2m guidelines.

Once this virus is done, it will be the NHS staff, the care workers, the shop workers, bin-men, posties, delivery drivers etc who I will remember as being the key workers. There might be shortages in other areas too, but some people say teaching is easy or cushy. So therefore there shouldn't be a shortage right? As it is such a cushy job?
And not engaging with the government, not sure where that has come from really. The head of the union might have said that but the teachers in my family would be happy to talk to anyone with possible solutions. [Post edited 14 May 2020 16:20]

Actually, whilst retention of teachers is slightly down in the last couple of years ( less than 1% so nothing to write home about ) , the number of teachers in the UK is actually up. Overall numbers are very slightly down due to the rise in new pupils being more than the rise in teachers.
The 'shortage' is caused by people breeding like rabbits and immigration meaning an un-naturally high rise in the child population in the UK.
