| Taking a knee on 20:54 - Jun 17 by Sadoldgit | All four teams have done it this evening. Given the number of black players in the a Premier league it makes sense that everyone does it. If you have one white player still standing that wouldn’t look great. |
Burnley have no black players in their first team squad, coincidentally or not. It will be interesting to see whether they kneel down.

Thing is, it's all about what looks good isn't it. Do you think all the players, taking a knee because they have been forced to, is going to stop a racist being racist anymore? If not what is the point? Just because it looks good? We all know they are only doing it because they have been told they have to. [Post edited 17 Jun 2020 21:09]

It wasn't that long ago that FIFA deemed poppies on shirts unacceptable because they didn't want "politics" creeping into football... not that the poppy signified politics in reality. Now every player has to wear shirts with "BLM" on the back. To coin a phrase; it's a funny old game.

It was a specific protest against the US government’s race handling that took place during their national anthem. So how does that work when the only music played when all the players are out is the premier league theme tune? I’d ‘take a knee’ to that tune.

Yes, it’s odd isn’t it. Hopefully the kneeling thing will be a one off for all Prem teams. Did they used to wear Kick It Out on their shirts at all?

Kick It Out shirts are worn in October normally as part of their week of action. I used to be a member of the Saints Racism Just Ain’t Saintly campaign. Christ, that was over ten years since I left to move to Spain, and things still haven’t improved one jot.

Really Toffs? Nothing’s changed at all - absolutely nothing? I might have the wrong end of the stick here, but I honestly can’t remember the last time I heard a racist comment at a Saints home game. Sexist yes, but not racist.

Fair enough, not nothing but it’s still way off where it should be in terms of eradicating racism out of the game. Like you I’ve not heard any racist comments at Goodison for a while (Everton were one of the worst when I was growing up) but I’ve still heard it away from the ground. I did report a section of fans to Kick It Out a few years back after a group of ‘supporters’ spent the entire match abusing Everton’s own black players. There was an investigation, I didn’t go back to that section again and that was that. People know they are being monitored and condition themselves accordingly for 90 minutes. Also the lack of BAME fans at Goodison as opposed to the demographic locally is still very low. I don’t know it’s like at Saints? To be honest, as a white male I find I am completely out of depth when talking about whether there is racism in football especially with other white men. I don’t feel I am qualified to.

It's a very coherent contextual statement. It isn't in anyway hyped or over the top...seems you have no problem with the award of the worlds football showpiece being held in a country with such an horrendous human rights record.

Times have changed. Didn't your fans infamously used to sing "We are Everton, we are white"? One of the problems with all of this is that people are frantic not to appear racist and almost fall over themselves to appear to do the right thing. It just wouldn't occur to me to treat a black person differently, but I don't feel the need to 'advertise' the fact. That said, would I feel mildly uneasy if I was walking through town at night, turned a corner and saw a group of black kids loitering? Yes, I probably would...BUT I'd also feel the same if I saw a group of ANY youths in that situation. Other than being a wimp, I'm not sure what that makes me...probably a fascist in 22's eyes.

'Nauseating' - as in it makes you physically sick? Sounds like a load of cry-baby hyperbole to me. The award of the World Cup to Qatar was wrong on pretty much every level. No one is arguing with that. I just don't understand why you have to be such a delicate flower about the fact that the world is full of hypocrisy. Good luck in your idealised world where everything is sweetness and light.

I watched a YouTube clip earlier showing highlights of Liverpool v Everton in the 87 league cup, throughout you could hear Everton are white being chanted, especially when John Barnes was in possession. Sickening stuff. The problem ‘the right thing’ should be the ‘normal’ thing and the colour of someone’s skin shouldn’t be an issue and I reckon for most people it isn’t, most football fans couldn’t care less who scores or who is a great defender, who is rubbish and who gets stick. But racism is still about. Chants last season (or was it this season, I can’t keep up) the way the media portray black players and the lack of black people at the top table of football, can’t be a coincidence given the demographic of black players in the game. I think it’s an uncomfortable conversation for most people as you can’t put your finger on it, but it’s still there. That’s my take on it anyway.

What's the context got to do with anything? Who cares why your overly sensitive constitution caused you to be overwhelmed by disgust at the thought of a teeny weeny bit of hypocrisy. Ooooh, the world is so unfair Mummy...

If you can find and name anyone important who thinks Black Lives Don't Matter (not counting the far right thugs and morons surrounding Churchill's statue) then perhaps there would be some point in making some kind of gesture, otherwise, why?
