So Little Britain has been removed from our screens. Fawlty Towers, Royal Family and Only Fools and Horses will apparently also be removed from Netflix etc. Little Britain took the p out of everybody, not just black people. And it was a joke to be enjoyed. They took the p out of gay people, and one of the lead characters, Matt Lucas is gay, so was all meant in good taste.

So any of us who like a bit of "edgy" comedy, will soon be going underground and buying dvds on the black market to sneak in an episode of a comedy classic!

Come Fly With Me was superb, if you’ll pardon the pun.

They used to give a warning before Game of Thrones to say that it contained scenes of a sexual nature and extreme violence. That is why I was watching it!

"Contains scenes of violence and an extreme sexual nature"

Me: Brilliant, I need this after working all day! :)

Probably about 30 years ago, I remember seeing a documentary type 'extra' on one of my mate's Chubby Brown videos (yes a VHS !!).
He said that yes he swears a lot and uses 'cvnt' quite frequently, but he said that this was the language the majority of his (initially) North East working mans clubs audience used, so why shouldn't he, as they can relate to him more. Think he is from Middlesbrough anyway.

He also said that he wasn't in the slightest bit racist, but took this piss out of anyone and everyone. Any Sex, Race, Nationality, Gender, Fat, Thin, Pop Star, Actor, in fact anything that was topical he would make a joke about and even better if it was to do with sex as well, as that was perceived to be funnier.

I think Bernard Manning said something similar but was more like, I'm not a racialist, I fvckin hate everyone !!

Even Jethro has has black mate Denzil and used to come up with plenty of sexual jokes regarding his cock.

Exactly, that's what the BBFC is for, right?

But removing stuff from our screens and preventing it being watched without choice is not on.

Let people make their own choice.

The thing is with comedy, someone has got to be the root cause of the joke, most jokes will cause offence to SOMEONE, that's what makes it funny.

Comedians will only take the piss out of the likes of Trump or the tories now, all very safe and generic.

It is easy as a white person to tell a black person that it is only a joke. The problem is when you have been oppressed for centuries and the butt of the joke for centuries, perhaps the joke isn’t that funny to you. There is a line and it shouldn’t be crossed. We should be smart enough to find things to laugh at beyond what other people look or sound like. Humour can be a force for good, it can also reinforce prejudices. It is all about finding a balance.

I just find things funny or not , which of these comedians that make me laugh are balanced or unbalanced ?

The Big Yin
Tommy Cooper
John Richardson
Jefro
And my all time favourite Dave Allen

I think we should just have a dedicated thread to Dave , he literally makes my cry laughing.

I would love to see all Lee Evans content removed from Sky. Seems there is always a 'Lee Evans live' on some channel or other at any given time on any given evening. And not because he isn't PC enough - he's just painfully unfunny. I watch it sometimes just to marvel at how he gets away with it. Say something completely dull, sweat, jerk about a bit, and get stadiums to p!ss themselves. How does that work?

The Big Yin I could take or leave but did make me laugh. Tommy Cooper was brilliant. Can’t place John Richardson. Havn’t heard much of Jethros stuff but my wife’s step Dad (who is from Somerset) loves him to bits. Dave Allen was a genius.

Lee Evans should win an award for sweating.

My favourite comedian/comic actor is Michael Palin.

Thing is, if you have found something to be distasteful after you have watched it, it is too late. I don’t see anything wrong with a warning system before a programme or a rating system for films.

You're right, that's why we always get the "bad language, nude scenes, scenes that some viewers may find offensive" before so many tv programmes now

And then the Samaritans number after!

This is true. We have lost our sense of humour and everyone and everything is far too serious. A joke is exactly that, a joke and a laugh. If we can't laugh at anything or anyone (and these jokes arnt personal) we will have nothing to laugh about! I mean we might say northerners are pie eating foreigners. It's not personal to an individual, it's a joke!

I would have been more impressed if they had got rid of Little Britain on the basis that it wasn’t that funny.

I used to live with the daughter of a principal singer from the Black & White Minstrels. They gave Lenny Henry his first big break and said that he was more than happy to be in the show at the time. He was adamant that the show wasn’t racist but looking back it looks very bad. He used to tour with another singer without black face but was often asked to black up by the fans.

There were some shows like Love Thy Neighbour and Till Death Do Us Part plus stand ups like Jim Davidson that makes you wonder how they ever got on TV although we were supposed to laugh at Alf Garnett, make people didn’t get the satire and laughed with him.

I’m sure that The Two Ronnie used to black up for some sketches now and again. Peter Sellers turned up for an interview with Michael Parkinson wearing a German helmet.

Different times, the 70’s. Very strange looking back on them now.

I knew John Boulter, one of the principal singers of the B&W Minstrels when he lived in Gillingham, Kent.He never saw it as racist, but predicted it would be labelled as that in the future. He had a few black friends who never felt intimidated or offended by it at all.

There was opposition to the Minstrels show way back in the 1960's. The origins for the act came from the USA. During the Minstels show opposition was voiced by Civil Rights and Anti Racist campaigners in the US and the UK which the BBC chose to ignore. It was highly offensive then as it is now.

As for Little Britain both David Walliams and Matt Lucas have said there were parts of the programme they would not make now so times have moved on.

I agree though we need to careful with any censorship. The right to make jokes needs to be balanced with the need to avoid offence. I can't stand Jim Davidson and wouldn't want him on the telly but if paying punters want to go and see that trash then that is their choice I guess.

'Highly offensive'
I saw Reginald D Hunter a few years back when he started stand up.Just one of a few comments -
'You white English people - look at you! You so damn ugly, and you drink beer like somebody is trying to take it away from you!'
Every white person in there laughed, enjoyed his act, were not offended and gave massive applause.
I'm glad to see he's gone up the ladder as a comedian. He's FUNNY FFS.

The West Country comment was slightly tongue in cheek, but actually I find him quite funny and clever
Strange thing is looking at your list, my family are all Londoners but I find Micky Flannagan an absolute pain, alright in dribs and drabs
But that is the beauty of comedy. Someone's SOH can be totally different to another, but the gist of this whole thread is that nothing should be taken too seriously unless they get too personal and genuinely offensive
Top of my list of can't stand "comedians" is Frankie Boyle, but loads love him - no accounting for taste

Ah yes, that could also go back to the Danny Baker tweet about the royal baby Archie! I genuinely think that comment was meant in a comedic way and in no way racist or meant to be offensive which is as it was taken. From regularly listening to him as well as following his tweets, you do I think get to "know them" a bit
