I've just been dealt a hammer blow at work after losing out on a tender I put everything I had in it and really don’t understand or agree with the reasons given.
I don’t think I’ve ever felt so angry and gutted about something to do with my job.

That sounds really tough! The trouble with tenders is you never know what’s going on behind the scenes, who has vested interests etc such as giving their mates the job or having put themselves put on a limb for one of the tenders and not wanting to back down.
I’ve got two: one where I joined an organisation that completely lied about the structure and how I’d be supported. It was awful with all these different factions trying to undermine me. As well as two bosses that hated each other, one of whom wanted the other’s project (mine) to fail. I’d recently come back from overseas and had to stick it out for my CV. Added to that there was casual sexual harassment. Hideous!
Another was a project I was involved in where a colleague was supposed to set up all the appointments and set up all the database for the data capture for a big survey. My boss was managing him but wasn’t involved in the actual project. The colleague didn’t do anything he was supposed to and just sat there on his computer for months. It was horrible as we had to pull it round but it never really recovered and my boss put all the blame on me.
In both cases I took way too much personal responsibility for what went wrong. Now I would be much more conscious of the external things I had no control over. I also learnt not to get in similar situations again and get greater support at an earlier stage. |  | | |

Another dept reshuffle in four years being announced that will probably be just as disastrous as the one before.
I’ll be reporting to one of four people of which two are not very much people-persons despite their job requiring them to be and two others who have just been promoted to that role (I decided not to apply as it’s a poisoned chalice where it’s expected you work weekends and early/late during the week because we report to the US and they do that despite everyone there hating it and being burned out) where one is ok and the other is just ladder climbing and a real ‘yes’ person to the bosses and I think will not realise the enormity of what they’ve brown-nosed their way into.
Edit: plenty of others in the past… got promoted into a job that had a company car only to be told there’s no company car. Fought it tooth and nail to no avail. Few years later got promoted again to head of department and had to speak to HR about company car again (this time opting for the allowance) and they said they forgot (yeah, right) about it and duly sorted it out, this time finally.
A few years later there was a centralisation of departments and i effectively got demoted despite passing the test for the senior job I applied for and it seemed clear to me it was pre-decided who was getting what job.
Couple of interim mini-promotions followed by another effectively demotion four years ago which brings us to tomorrow. My job has been like snakes and ladders!

It depends whether you mean career wise, but my biggest regret was leaving a job I loved to join a company I detested from day 1!
If only somebody had explained to me at the time that the additional salary I was offered didn’t even match the pension contributions that my old company made into my pension (there was no pension at my new company).
That’s cost me tens of thousands now over the 25 years since and having been able to retire at 60!
I too am a Building Services estimator (now) and to lose a project you’ve put a lot of effort into is really disappointing especially when you suspect you’ve just been used as a pricing exercise. |  | | |

Biggest disappointment: Having to take leave due to stress from a bullying manager. Horrible to suffer from ill health due to a vindictive manager but a lesson learned in that no manager who pushes his weight around is going to get my services again. By and large most managers understand that if you want to get the best out of people then you manage them well though. | | | |

Biggest disappointment comes around once a month when I compare hours done to pay earned.
Most recently is the ludicrous hoops to jump through to bin off a pisstaking performer and the absolute joke of a process so clearly weighted against the manager.
I was brought up in the era of the DCM being dished out on a Friday (that’s “Don’t Come Monday” not decondensed milk). You had to perform or be bombed out. There’s no fear in corporate or biggish companies now, there’s a whole genre of people who expect everything for little effort.

Worst was charity that I was third person in.
Problem throughout was overall manager, embarrassingly and openly pursuing his female staff, some willing, others not, but his so called friends were paid much more and often their mistakes consistently overlooked and allowed and those that put in the work seriously undermined and underpaid when doing majority of the work.
When he took a dislike to someone despite it only bring a small organisation, he made it impossible for the people to continue so they left oe he found a way to say cheerio.
Massive impact on my personal confidence and like many there we did not leave as our confidences been so undermined, looking elsewhere was impossible.
Couple years later it was investigated and the three main protagonists all were removed by the watchdog body regulating this industry.
But set me back personally and professionally..
Made me heck of a lot stronger but a few years I would rather not have experienced. |  |

Left a stable and well paid job on London Underground that I hated for an unstable and low paid job in a sector that I had a passion for.
It drained me completely and I’ve never been so disillusioned. Now trying to get back on the Underground.

Sorry to read of your plight Dixie, it really is a cnt when you invest time and money into a fruitless bid, I know, I've been there occasionally, but fortunately a long, long time ago.
I grew up in a self employed environment, surrounded by many like minded individuals, put my first price in at 19 and had developed the 'radar' for bona fide customers long before I ever emigrated to the States.
I take on very few new clients these days, not giving fee estimates, (except to established customers), because estimating is one of the services I offer / perform for other companies, gets rid of the chancers, but you have to have built up fck off money and strong business credentials to achieve that luxury.
Never give up mate, your work ethic and professional standards will win out.
Oh yeah, the time wasters looking for strongly descriptive estimates, I call this coaching. All they want is direction on how much and how to perform whatever project they have in mind, then have 'Uncle Tommy' do it for peanuts.

Thing about this commission is that we lead on a consortium bid and now I have to tell eight other organisations that we didn’t get it. I am a bit shocked at the rationale given, some of it is so far off that it doesn’t look right.
Considering our options on this because I think the rival bid broke some competition laws by including a partner from our consortium on their bid so details about our proposal could have been shared.
This was to deliver a youth work contract and I know the other bid will not be as beneficial for young people because the cu nts hoover up the money and don’t deliver what they are supposed to. | | | |

Been working in construction recruitment for over 20 years now , with present company for 18 of themn , we supply towercrane drivers and guys assoc with heavy lfiting on building sites acorss the uk. used to be an ok job money was ok , in recent years post covid its awful daily grind to get guys on to site , and when ur commision based every guy you dont get out means less money in the pocket.
work 7 days a week sometimes hard to take time off as who ever is covering dosnt rwally bother so you end up on the phone , anyway when trying to take some down time spent months on tenders and have performed excellenty on previous jobs for the same company only to be told sorry using somebody else . so less money comes in each month , now each day is a grind , work from home luckily so dont have to sopend time with some of the W@nkers t who work for us in other fields who really coulnt give a to$$ .
the worst part is the sunday feeling that feeling you used to get when u had to go back to school , this menas zero sleep at weekends esp sunday nights as you dread getting up on a monday morning to do the same $hit all again .
its so bad when my mum passed away late last year i let the boss know the funeral plans time etc and said can this person cover me , yeah all sorted day of the funeral person was no where to be seen so had the choise of losing potentially thousands of pouinds of work as the phone wouldnt be covered or turning the volume off and dealing with it after the funeral ended . |  |

Sorry to hear that, Dixie.
It can be hard to maintain the right work-life balance. Incredibly difficult. But it may well be the most important aspect of our life to get right, because if we fail to get that balance right and if we over-emphasise work then our health suffers and our human relationships suffer.
There comes a day in all of our lives when we realise that work is merely there to serve the parts of our lives that are actually important - to put bread on the table, to pay doctors' bills, to put our loved ones through school, and that beyond that (for most of us with non-vocational jobs) work has no intrinsic value at all. Once we've realised that, it can actually be hard to maintain the ferocious drive to work that we might have had as young adults.
My only advice is to try and work with people you enjoy, doing something that you respect, try your damnedest, and after that walk out the work gate every evening and leave the work behind the gate. |  |

Some tough reading here; all of which I'd sum up as a global phenomenon to be the first to reach the bottom.
I've worked all over the world and frankly, who hasn't endured frustrations and disappointments along the way. If anything, it makes you.
However, given the area I mainly worked in, I've seen a lot of the worst and plain nastiness that man can subject his fellow man to. Dealing as I often did in human misery, it certainly made me grateful for what I have, and it lent perspective when I started to think about moaning about my lot.
Which is why I'd like to change the tone and maybe proffer some advice.
The greatest lesson I learned during my working life: was to learn and develop the ability to leave work problems where they belong. Work!
Hard, didn't always succeed, but I did in the main. Kept me sain and ensured I enjoyed my life outside of work.
I was someone who 100% worked to live. Regularly fcuked off travelling; always took my holidays - ensured everyone under me did too; never contactable on holiday and weekends and was not shy on being first out the door at the end of the day. Why? I never worked for any employer - including leftie law firms or the UN - that wouldn't stiff you if it suited them.
Might have been easier for me, and we're heading for economically choppy waters soon, but if I didn't like my job or employer, I just left! Life is too short to be living under the yoke of work misery.
Failing all that: have a really good pasttime* that justifies why you're doing what you're doing, brings pleasure and unfetteted enjoyment.

d) save and invest. Start planning your retirement now. If you're 20 now, your pension age is 68. David Bowie died at 69 and he was David motherfking Bowie. He was rich and had the best doctors. His doctors were probably fans of his. Get in, get paid and get out. |  |

My skill set means I don't often work on clients that do dead sexy stuff, which I'm fine with. But one day I got one. I totally owned it (was known as "Rob's domain" in the company) and did incredible work. Huge results, positive changes for society, won a heap of awards. My work was cited in industry reports as new best practise.
Then they appointed a new lead client, who basically just immediately fired us and brought in the agency they used in a previous role. 4 years of the best work of my life taken away from me for literally no reason.
Took me about 6 months professionally to get over it. Luckily I'm a petty guy so was eventually able to foster a "I'll show you" attitude, but 5 years later in genuinely still rankles with me |  | | |

In my experience, you're absolutely 100% correct about HR departments.
Which is why you should join a trade union. Stopping little boys going up chimneys; healthy and safe work places; holidays; payment of wages so on and so forth, didn't come about because of the benevolence and goodwill of the forebares of the Rees-Moggs and Rothschilds of this world!
You're also totally right to advise on retirement planning from the earliest day possible. Albeit I fear many people entering the work environment from now on will have to contend with regular periods out of work.
