I didn’t see that coming. Pathetic stuff.
I’m tempted to say we need to give the manager and the new style of play time, but if a team like Gillingham can work us out, it’s going to be another long season.

Oh the ghost of Grimsby, hopefully not! But just remember those players out there are hopeless. They were last year, under three different managers and were tonight. It could be a good thing for RM to see that they should never play for Saints again. | |

It was a style of play with terrible players - Not surprising. Don't overreact. Those players are dreadful. Mara is the worst player I have ever seen. Let's see what happens Saturday with Smallbone, Stephens, Manning, Tella etc who are much better players. [Post edited 8 Aug 2023 22:14]

Some interesting insight from Jo Tessem on Solent tonight, who is light years ahead of Merrington in his analysis.
His last comment was that 15 of the squad of 30 need to find somewhere else to play their football. Brutally blunt but absolutely spot on. |  |

Not the end of the world to be knocked out from what is, after all, a Micky Mouse competition.
However, I can’t help but wonder wether the nature of the loss will only increase the desire of some of our better players to want to leave. Some who may of thought “ I’ll give it a go for a season “ are more likely now to think “ sod that for a game of soldiers “ given the nature of what sounds like a capitulation tonight. | |

Depends which way you look at it of course but I actually hope and think that tonight is a good thing. I don't care about the cup, we won't win it anyway. RM will now be aware of how bad some of the squad members are and will never wear the shirt again - that's a good thing. Tonight we played the reserves. The first team will know that. | |

Regardless of the opposition, making 11 changes will always have it's problems. It's the youngsters I feel sorry for. Look at Ballard for instance - scored on his debut v Cambridge last season. This time he got a half, which could be has last appearance of the season, as we failed to advance in the competition he gets to appear in.
We went out in the semis of this competition last season, yet went out this season in a round we didn't even compete in last season !! :-) |  |

I think we have been lulled into a false sense of security by that late goal against Sheffield Wednesday. They are losing at home to Stockport tonight and may very well turn out to be the worst team in the Championship.

Yeah well we’ll get to see which of the two games was more of a fluke on Saturday with whatever the result is against Norwich, but even then when you make 11 changes to the starting 11 and only keep 1 player on for the majority of the game who should be playing on Saturday, then it’s never gonna be as good as the one we saw on Friday night.
And even the Wednesday did win that game on pens, which is more than can be said about us! | |
