Sad news… a true legend 😥

Poll: Prediction League ... Continue or have a World Cup Break?

Not unexpected, but a sad reminder of how the beautiful game used to be played. I'm sure we'll see loads of *Charlton's* goals being shown on tribute programmes, and he rarely scored a tap-in

When he played in the friendly at Spotland (around 1980?) he was still spraying the ball around the pitch with perfect timing, and of course he had to score to send the crowd home happy. There was a "parting of the Red Sea" in our defence late in the second half to allow him to blast the ball home at the Pearl St end - not unlike watching our defending today, in fact

An absolute legend of the game, one of the true greats, and a great man of football too.

RIP Sir Bobby. Great player and a true gentleman.

How he found the strength to carry on is testament to the man.

One of the most naturally gifted footballers I ever saw.
And one of the most unassuming. I was told that he became more taciturn after Munich but who wouldn’t brood after losing so many mates.
It’s worth while remembering that an awful lot of those goals were scored from midfield rather than upfront which makes his tally all the more remarkable.
I remember that friendly against Derby. Was Uncle Stan Milburn influential in asking him to play.
I’m sure that he whacked a trademark pile driver from outside the penalty area at the Pearl Street end which smacked against the crossbar and rebounded way back towards halfway. The bar was still reverberating minutes later!

He would occasionally be spotted at some of our midweek matches at Spotland, way back when. Did he know Fred Ratcliffe or something?

I always thought it was because he was Stan Milburn’s nephew.

Perfect game next week to celebrate him.
He was from an era when people from Manchester went to both venues.
Not the same kind of people as we have attending football matches these days sadly
Just MPOV of course 😞

A player who represented everything that was good about football in the 1960s.

Cannot forget how he controlled beckenbauer in the 1970 QF and Ramsay taking him off in anticipation of a semi final led to der kaiser taking over the game.

What a wonderful contibution to the game the Milburn/charlton family made.

He loved sport of any kind.
I saw him on various occasions at the other Old Trafford watching the cricket and also watching rugby league at Salford.

Whatever happened to his nightclub in Rochdale?

When I was your age, I used to enjoy the odd game of tennis. Or was it golf?

I met him at Spotland years ago, he was with his wife and they both took the time to have a chat. Came across as lovely people.

Pete Madden, Fred Ratcliffe and maybe Brian Kidd also in that picture. I have an abiding memory of that game, Southall made the best save that i have seen, right in front of the Sandy Lane.

Fred Eyre
Roy McFarland
Russell Bromage
Len Cantello
Bobby Charlton
Bryan Hamilton
Brian Kidd
Brendan O'Callaghan
Bobby Downes
Mike Sweeney
Jim McCalliog

Yet another team that FRMSE’s dad player for!
The friendly I was reminiscing about earlier in the thread was in the 1970’s I think.
Dale were skint and I’m sure Tommy Docherty, manager of Derby County, brought the Rams to Spotland for a friendly and Bobby Charlton guested for them.
I might be completely wrong of course.

That was the game i was thinking of when Charlton scored

The report says he was "put clear" which is something of an understatement by LB

Also why i thought the keeper was Felgate, since he played in that game and there's a resemblance with Southall
