Agree. It’s blindingly obvious. And what some of us have been calling for since before the squads were named. Every football-going fan I know who I’ve conversed with thinks the same. Bellingham at 8, Foden at 10, Eze/Gordon on the left, Saka on the right, Rice holding.
However, it’s clear that Southgate is going to die on the hill of the double pivot. Even if it means playing one of your top players out of position and playing a very young lad or a right back as the other deep lying midfielder.
One thing I would say from today, that perhaps isn’t getting enough comment/critique is the back 4. They spent the entire game at least 5, if not 10, yards too deep. It was inexplicable, especially when you have the pace of Guehi and Walker in that back line. That meant back to front we were far too spaced out. This makes the press much harder and higher risk (everyone has to cover more ground), but in possession it also means you’re playing longer passes through the lines, which is much harder, and you have more ground to cover with forward runs to get in support.
Countless times there was no urgency to push out and get up the pitch. I’m a fan of his but Stones is not at the races. He has to command that back line and get them up the pitch. I don’t understand why Southgate wasn’t bawling at them all game to push up. |
As much as midfield is an issue it's just mad not to go with a fit left sided defender - with Trippier there you're basically only using about 75% of the pitch when going forwards.
On the plus side - we've got four points, top of the group, and almost certain to qualify for the second round.
On the negative side - playing like this, we're unlikely to progress any further than that!
Can only assume Southgate is trying to channel the spirit of Greece at Euro 2004 and bore our way to the trophy 
PS look at how Spain played with speed and energy - was like a different sport. |  |

I find it all so frustrating and it's almost always the same. Start slowly, results Ok but team look disjointed, we then make some changes and look better before losing to the first good team we play.
It was the same under Robson, Venables, Hoddle, Sven, Capello, Hodgson and now Southgate and will be the same under the next one as well. I just don't think we are ever going to change it. |  | | |

It was dreadful, Connell. It was also hod and very humid. These are all factors.
What I found more worrying was the body language in the tunnel beforehand and at half-time, where the players looked flat. On the pitch there was far, far too many shrugs and hand gestures. The team looked slow, disjointed and frustrated.
Plenty time to turn it around 1990-style but the post-match analysis might have to be frank and honest first. |  |

England were absolute wan k last night. I’m someone who wasn’t too stressed about the performance against Serbia, but last night was much, much worse. I was really hoping not to see TAA starting against Denmark. We’re now firmly back into Scholes/Gerrard/Lampard territory, where we try and shoehorn our favourite players into the side at the expense of putting out a balanced team. Experimenting with player a RB in CM during a tournament seems mental when there are good players available who actually play in that position.
I hate playing with square pegs in round holes, so I would sooner have a 6/10 specialist LB playing at LB, than play a RB there who may be a better player and may have more experience, but who’s clearly uncomfortable and goes inside every time they receive the ball. I get that the hope is that Shaw will be fit sooner rather than later, but what if he’s not? I would have taken someone like Tyrick Mitchell, just to ensure the team had balance. Foden always comes inside too, so there is almost no width at all on the left.
The whole midfield was a disaster zone yesterday – none of them played well individually, and certainly not as a unit. It was just a mess. If Shaw’s not fit and we stick with Trippier at LB against Slovenia, then we surely have to play Gordon or Eze out on the left to give us some width. |  |

When Southgate got the job back in 2016 we'd been buried by Iceland + had that Allardyce fiasco, it was a low with minimal expectations, anything was a bonus. He took a team of Lingard, Ali, Young, Sterling, Maguire to a world cup semi, come on... people actually thought we had a god-given right to beat Croatia, they were a much better team.
Favorable circumstances have seen top class players develop since then and with that expectations. The reality is we now have a group of players with much more talent (and ever growing egos), but a manager with a basic skillset and almost underdog mentality that's fast losing respect of the group. He's tried to make everyone happy but when it starts rocking has nothing to fall back on.
Southgate is a championship manager at best, interesting to see where he ends up in a few years. |  | | |

It's so frustrating to see England go backwards like this. There have been so many improvements under Southgate compared to what came before, but we've had glaring issues for years, none of which seem any closer to being addressed, and now we're regressing on the stuff we'd previously done well too.
Unless there's a massive turnaround in the rest of the tournament, the drop-off in performances over the last few years does suggest that Southgate's methods aren't as effective with this group as they've been previously, and that it's probably time for a change. | | | |

Southgate was a great manager when we were in our transitional phase – trying to bring through some of the younger generation, putting pride back into the shirt, making us much more competitive etc. We’re now at a different point in our development – we have an abundance of talent, the like of which we’ve not had since 2006 or possibly earlier. I just worry whether it’s a tournament too far and the role of managing such a talented group of players and the massive egos which comes with it, needed to be given to someone else.
But it’s not an easy job, everyone has a different opinion, as others have said, there have been many before Southgate that have had the same experience. Personally, knowing it’s my last tournament, and the number of people getting on my back, I’d go out with an attacking at all costs philosophy, give the people what they want, at least if/when it goes to sh*t you can give it the ‘are you not entertained line’…
Gordon on the left to support Kane. Kane desperately needs legs around him and Saka and a 3 of Foden, Bellingham and Rice. Give the people what they want and you won’t die wondering.
Alternatively, take the hard decisions and drop some big names to get the right balance. At the moment I think he’s neither doing what he thinks is best and picking the most balanced team (probably because he doesn’t’ want to p*s off some big egos) or going full ‘man of the people’ Manager mode. He needs to take some decisive action, and quickly. | | | |

Definitely a tournament too far, and he's definitely improved the role/team since taking over.
However, while he's great at group football, once we're in the knockout phase, he seems to deflate. For me, he would be ideal at running the FA, I just couldn't see any top-top team going for him.
When it's all said and done: he'll leave it in better shape then he found it should he move or is moved on. | |
