Bizarrely almost exactly 49 years to the very day when both clubs were semi finalists in the FA Cup and we met on April 3rd 1976 at Stamford Bridge

I was in the Shed end, where Saints' fans were packed in like sardines. That was my all-time favourite Saints game. One national newspaper reported that it was the noisiest Stamford Bridge had ever been. I preferred it even to the final, where the atmosphere was spoilt somewhat by most of Wembley being taken over by Man United fans. In those days 'winning' off the pitch was important as winning on it. Another memorable game v Palace was our 6-0 victory on a glorious, sunny evening at the end of the 1970-71 season, when we qualified for Europe with what was Ted Bates' best ever team. Mick Channon and Ron Davies both scored. [Post edited 31 Mar 11:08]

Whos Going On Wednesday on 10:53 - Mar 31 with 911 views | MytchettSaint | The hassle of trying to leave work early, do battle with the traffic and getting home late afterwards all to watch us roll over isn’t worth it. Will probably come down for the Villa game if the trains are ok that weekend.

Trains are disrupted on the Villa game around Winchester/Basingstoke and indeed the Bournemouth direction. I thought about coming down for a day on the piss but I’ll wait till the Arsenal mauling now.

The trains are far from OK that weekend. Fun and games on the trains for most weekends in April. Something else to put those off who have had enough.

Ditto, although I've really enjoyed having the last couple of weekends off and haven't missed watching us at all.

I’m glad I didn’t bother getting a ticket for the Villa game then.

I was also there for both games dirk. Semi final, in a seat which was inline with the big box. I remember thinking Gilly will never score from there and in a split second later the whole stand around us erupted with joyful Saints fans. Second goal, Micky was outside the box when fouled for the penalty and the ref bought it. Peache’s penalty went straight down the middle of the goal and as you say the noise after he scored was the loudest I’ve ever heard at a Saints game. 6-0, I had a Palace neighbour who gave me stick all week long before the game and was conspicuous for his absence when I returned home. Happy memories that keep me going even though currently our wonderful club is in the hand of a bunch of incompetent doughnuts.
