Gary O Neil suddenly becomes favourite 23:14 - Nov 6 with 8720 viewsSouthamptonfan

Interesting that Gary O Neil 's odds have shortened dramatically. Perhaps he will be in the stands Saturday. He has a house down here, having been at Bournemouth. It could be him couldn't it. But has an affinity with Pompey. Could we get over that? Not sure it's a good idea!

Ouch! Nothing like digging up some sh1t on our new manager to endear him to our fans
I do remember approx 2004/5 a certain Sandbanks resident saying he would never join that lot down the road (us!) and that didn't exactly go too well

If people aren’t concerned a potential manager celebrated us being beaten in our most important game, said he’s a fan of our rivals, said he likes going back to watch them, said he had a bond with their fans and said he dreams of managing them, then why f*ck do you call yourself a Saints fan?

Because I’ve been watching them for nearly 50 years. Next question.

It took me a very long time to get over that performance.
I watched it round my mates house in utter silence.
I do not want Gary O'Neil anywhere near our club.

I think he’s an intelligent manager with a bit about him.

I am unconcerned that he played for Pompey.

Why do you say 'he’s an intelligent manager with a bit about him'?

My opinion. Thoughtful coach who won’t take any crap.

I’m not saying there aren’t better options out there though.

What has he done that makes you think he would be the answer to our problems?

If we employ him as manager,I will live with my memories of Saints from the past and try and forget we have a Pompey fan who celebrated our biggest defeat as 'A Great day on the South Coast'

Have to say, I have a lot of sympathy for this stance.

Gary O’Neil is nowhere near a high enough calibre manager to risk having a large proportion of the fan base alienated by him.

I would rather have kept Will Still. Or even Nathan Jones.

An increasing amount of saints fans saying they don’t care about the Pompey links etc like they are above any kind of rivalry, pretty much sums up our fan base.
I don’t want him because he’s a filthy skate and he’s not very good, if the choice is him or someone just not very good I’ll go for the latter.

Grumps. Given that in my opinion Sports Republic are a Player Trading and Fun Fair Business rather than a Football Club I doubt they are remotely concerned about any division they cause.

I don't think anyone should pay any attention to Gary O'Neill being current bookies favourite.
1. This is one of those novelty markets that only one or two bookies price up and it is purely a PR exercise for them - getting a bit of cheap publicity for their brand.
2. A very small bet eg £25 will shift the market enormously and I suspect one person has had such a bet based on nothing more than a whim.
3. No bookie will ever take on a big bet on this because they all know 100% it would be based on inside info.
4. GO’N may nevertheless become the new manager but at this stage I wouldn't take the betting market as any guide
(No doubt then he will be announced as new manager in the next hour…!)

This is so true. What do you think Pompey fans would say if Lallana got his first managerial job with them…
He might be a nice guy and a half decent coach but he’s a skate all the way through.
He’s not someone who’s just had the misfortune of playing for them, he’s a fan.
I’d even prefer the arrogant b@stard RM over this slug..
The closest he should get to Southampton is doing some shopping in Poole.

Sacked by Bournemouth
Sacked by Wolves

What has he achieved?
Am I missing something?

Celebrated when Pompey beat us in a Derby.

Why is he even considered.

Kept Bournemouth up.
Kept Wolves up.
Both were in the mire when he took over.
Will deal with a problem dressing room.

Couldn’t give a toss who paid him to play football.

I can discuss at lot of opinions on here. Having a skate manager though is not one of them .

Forget all these losers.

If Dragan and Sports Republic really mean business they should go for Patrick Vieira.

He's the man who has the leadership and presence to take charge of our mob and get them, the fans and owners all on board.

I thought I was grown up ..
Grown up to know you don’t have a skate as manager of our club.
Thankfully it won’t happen now. He can work his wonders in the north east of England now.

If you have been watching Saints for over 50 years then you would know the hatred doesn’t go back that far. When I was a kid my family used to sometimes go to Pompey on a Saturday if Saints were away just to watch football. And lots of players have played for both clubs. If O’Neil came in and did a good job no one would give a shite about his Portsmouth connections.

If you love the club, you love the club, it's not conditional on who the manager is, or even the owners, they all come and go, but the club is permanent (hopefully!)

I wholly disapprove of what you say and will defend to the death your right to say it.

Even though I have been a fan for 50 +years I was answering to what the previous poster wrote.
He/she said they’d been a fan for over 50 years .
That’s just like me.
If memory serves me right over 41 years ago I went to Fratton park in a FA Cup game, something told me with my experience that day that the animosity and hatred towards them, would be with me forever. If any Saints fan thinks otherwise then they’re a fool. He’s a skate and always will be.
No self respecting Saints fan would want to be associated with the slime trail that comes after the slug he is
