Anyone on here knows I have banged on about the need for an experienced manager for a while and I and others couldn't deny the fantastic turnaround when Tonda took over, so I thought maybe just maybe, this guy has it. Southamptonfan, you and I were the only ones who said it from day one about Still.
I didn’t comment about Tonda, wishing at least to give the fella a chance but it grieves me to say it the doughnuts who own and run the club appear to have made the same mistake again.
The only other feasible explanation is that the experienced players at the club are running the club from the dressing room up rather than the other way around.Player power did for Still and I won’t be at all surprised that it will do it for Tonda.
As I pointed out when Still was appointed, experienced players ask a new manager when things are going wrong, “ where are your medals ?”. If you have none to show them they quickly revert to their previous easy street comfort zones with losing games being an acceptable result. [Post edited 26 Dec 17:48]

I think the Jury's still out. I don't want to condem him too early. He did after all find a winning formula for 5/6 of his first games. All he needs to do is find it again.
I do think teams have studied us and worked us out though. The manager's job is to change up things to outsmart the opposition. We seem to have just gone back to possesion driven sideways bullshit that we had before TE. It makes me think senior players in the squad are an issue in influencing a young manager that we need to play the RM way. They need to get rid of that style now or TE will face the same oblivion WS did. [Post edited 26 Dec 17:44]

Exactly right. The problem when things go wrong in particular, is that an experienced manager can point out his previous successes to show the players that he knows what he is doing - "I know what I'm doing. I have won promotions / titles / cups. Trust me". The Still's and Tonda's of this world are still learning, haven't won anything in the past and the players know it. Let’s face it when they sacked Still no way did they plan to appoint Tonda permanently. It was only when we won those games on the bounce that Dragan and his clowns appointed him permanently slapping themselves on the back in the process.

Tonda is a way better proposition than the uninspiring Will Still who was taking us down probably. But Tonda needs an experienced assistant, target man and decent goalie and the fans need to show some patience.
After the chastening season last year and the Russball habits that seem hard to shake off, the players appear to be quickly demoralised and soon resort to sideway passing as their default. This is a BIG job! | |
