| We have more chance of going up now than next season 08:32 - Jan 27 with 636 views | PatfromPoole | For the club to just write the season off now, as Nick indicated on Solent last night, is madness. Even with the big points gap to the play-offs, if we can somehow get 3 or 4 wins on the bounce, it puts us in with a chance of finishing in the top 6. The Championship will be much tougher next season, in our final year of the big parachute payments. Burnley, Wolves and (probably) West Ham will be strong. Birmingham will be stronger, probably Sheffield United and probably Wrexham would as well too. Even Norwich may have some impetus. If we don't go up this season, we could well lose Scienza and Harwood-Bellis, and would we really replace them with superior players???? If we can get in the play-offs this season, I don't think there would be anyone to fear. We are in danger of looking back on this in years to come as a real chance wasted. | |

Sometimes you need a season to rebuild, and we certainly did. However, I don't think we will compete next season either as clearly all is not well at the club.
| We have more chance of going up now than next season on 10:11 - Jan 27 with 462 views | DorsetIan | Watching the game on TV on Sunday, it crossed my mind that Tonda might turn out to be a 'steadying the ship' type manager. We didn't look like world beaters but I felt that we were doing the right things and I didn't have the same sense of hopelessness as when watching the Jones or Still teams. Let's see if we can make some king of useful/sensible signing this month and then see how the next 19 games go. 57 points to play for and getting into that final play off slot is all about momentum /form in the final part of a season and winning on the final day. And let's worry about next season when it comes. We are where we are. | |

Baring Scienza we haven't got a single player who is anywhere near PL level. To stay up we would need to bring in a whole new squad of players and we won't have the funds to do this and SR don't have the football intelligence to do this. It would be another season of trying to reach double figures of points and I don't think many fans could stomach this. If we stay in this division at least we will win some games next season and the league table shows that teams who do not have parachute payments can still be very competitive. Next year is the last year of the larger parachute payments. The following year sees a much reduced sum coming in. I agree that we are not currently anywhere near having a good enough team for the Prem, but then neither did Sunderland when they were being outplayed by Coventry and Sheffield United in the play-offs, and somehow beat both of them.

If we reach the end of the season and we're looking at poor teams like Wrexham and Millwall in the play offs, it will underline what a criminal waste this season has been and what a mess SR have made of it. There is no doubt that a club with our budget should be challenging for the play offs. One of the biggest ironies is that SR have consistently gambled in the transfer market (on inexperienced, untested, foreign and injured players) when they shouldn't have done. But now, when they really should gamble, it looks like they are going to fold and pass up the opportunity. Now is absolutely the time when they should be taking a chance on a young striker who can't get in to a top team (like Broja was say) or a veteran goal scorer who can't play 90 mins week in week out. These are gambles that could easily fail but are still worth taking now. Instead they've gambled when they shouldn't have done, on the likes of Downes, and now seem to have lost all ambition.

I'd be more than happy with play offs and miss out on going up, in fact for the reasons you state, that would be the preference At least then we could possibly build on that next season

We've made just one signing in this window ( apart from Bree coming back off loan). And it was a typical SR gamble, we've got Peretz on loan, he's totally unproven & possible Inferior to both Baz & Macca. I wouldn't bet against Macca coming back in at some stage & replacing Peretz. SR have mastered the art of replacing half decent players with rubbish. But providing it saves us money SR are happy, we know that their philosophy is to make money & not winning football matches. A very, very short sighted plan & doomed to fail.

However, as GRIM points out, football success is not what matters to our current owners and their employees at Sports Republic. Us fans want a competitive team who whatever league they play in will at least “ give it a go “. They want ( and reluctantly to their credit have achieved ) a Player Trading Business and Entertainment Business based at St Mary’s, that at best makes them money and at worst doesn’t lose any. In my opinion our and their objectives are currently incompatible. Thus until Sports Republic depart, we have many years of mid table mediocrity to look forward to with us becoming very similar to Preston North End, a team with a considerable amount of history that nobody outside of Preston ever considers or thinks about.

| We have more chance of going up now than next season on 14:55 - Jan 27 with 17 views | 1885_SFC | With the transfer deadline fast approaching, any word on a new striker yet? AA just isn't up to it lately (he's so out of form it's untrue) and with Cam Archer being guff, it leaves Ross Stewart as our only real threat... and who knows how long he can remain fit. Surely some of the Premier League clubs have a young but capable striker on their books that they'd like to see being given playing time? We must have contacts at said clubs, surely? We can plough on through the rest of the season with other positions for now - but if we don't improve our options up front, we are going nowhere this season. | |
