Sheffield United Reflection 18:17 - Feb 28 with 2972 viewsbluenwhite10

Was it a poor performance or an alright performance with what players we had available?

I think this might be a bit controversial but I believe it was somewhere in the middle.

Take out from your starting 11.

Norrington-Davies
Dembele
Chair
Burrell
Poku
Madsen

Loan out your utility player Field

Play 70% Clarke-Salter and a rushed back Varane
Bennie
Morgan
Vale
Bennie
Esquerdinha

You are going to struggle.

Sheffield United have a strong team and bench and due to poor management are in a wrong position, but are turning it around.

No surprises today with the result, thought it might of gone to 3 or4

Not sure why Kone’s header was chalked off.

Referee was very poor today missed a load of minor offences.

You can only put what bodies are available and it is clear to see the Bennies need a loan spell to get upto the rigours of English football.

Second half much better than the 1st.

I think next week will be more of the same.

MOM Jimmy Dunne and Kone battled well.

Come on you R’s

I thought there was no lack of effort but players started off unsure of their roles, hence the finger-pointing after the goals. I think you can get away with having one or two young inexperienced players in a side, but we have gone beyond the tipping point where having too many at the same time means no one can perform well, no matter how hard they try.

Quite a fair reflection, I'd say. A couple of lapses first half and thereafter a mountain to climb. Felt really sorry for Jimmy Dunne. He is giving 100% to the cause and leading the team well but something is going wrong alongside him every game it seems. Mbengue, when he came on was good. Also, Vale second half at left back much better than Esquerdinha, who, I'm afraid, doesn't have the bit between his teeth as yet. Vale at LB next time RND cannot play please.

Agree with you, could be more of the same next Sunday. Especially if we don't score in the first 25 minutes or so.

First half was embarrassingly easy for them. We had one shot on target apart from the disallowed goal that I can recall - Vale's free kick which was routine. We might have equalised if the goal stands but the first half was dire, injuries or no injuries.

And the crowd is definitely beginning to turn. Was surprised how voluble the cheering was when Varane got subbed. If they're on the beach already, it's going to be a tough last 11 games.

yea agree with this - atmosphere was pretty subdued right from the start I thought. Definitely a feeling of going through the motions both on and off the pitch

Centre mid devoid of any leadership or brains. Morgan has good energy but I think he's not the smartest bloke in the squad. Varane doesn't have the guts for championship football. He's not brave enough and almost always passes backwards (you can see why with his awful assist for their second goal.) Vale is okay but needs more technicians on the pitch to play alongside.
With Chair instead of Saito, Burrell instead of Bennie and Madsen instead of Morgan or Varane we could have expected something from todays game.
Can't see us winning again until several of these injured players return.

Thought we were in for another hiding but we had chances to get back in the game and was thankful we didn’t concede more .
I think it was Varane who gave it away for the second but it was an awful mistake regardless of the decent finish .
As Clive said , all these sides who struggled early in the season who have the parachute payments are finding another gear and so it proved today .
Put our three best players Burell , Chair and Madsen back in the team , probably a different result .
Hamer and Bamford came on as subs which puts everything in perspective

For me the game was done at 2-0 down, thought Esquidina (Heverton Santos mk 2) was awful again, to blame for the first done over by Chong the Championship journeyman, Varane terrible, compounded by giving the ball away for the 2nd goal. I was just suprised that we were not tonked in the 2nd half. Looked much better with Smyth and Mbengue on the pitch, both should have started. Don't know why our goal was disallowed. Can't see us doing anything against Middlesbrough they are at another level.

In my opinion we lost the game with the starting line up and our approach to the game.

As with Blackburn we gave United too much time and and space to ping the ball around, play their football and of course this breeds confidence.

We played a back 5 for the first half Vale was playing right wing back, I'm guessing because Stephen does not trust Esquerdinha, abandoned after the second goal, I felt if we could have got through to half time we might have been in with a chance but Varane's miss kick leading to 2nd goal killed us off

There was a lot of musicality about the game.
They had the rhythm, we had the blues.

Whenever we play Sheffield Utd I see comments that they are a strong team but never see that said about us. It doesn't feel that we ever do anything about this and just pick up more small waif like types who are injury prone. Pompey brought in a couple of signings who have scored whilst our January signing appears to have got injured arriving and can't play. We pay peanuts and get faulty goods cast off by other clubs like Saito.

Perhaps it's my imagination but whenever we play at Bramall Lane early in the season we do ok but always lose the return at home as by then we usually find ourselves in another crisis by the time the Blades show up. Like I say I might have that wrong brought about by a crushed belief that it will ever get better.

The first half showed the gulf between the two teams. Sheffield Utd were well coached, with every single player knowing in detail their role and the team as a whole being well structured and working as one. Their players were fit, fast and strong. They gave away good fouls, if that makes sense, when they needed to. They played the game on the front foot, knowing like everyone else does that if you put QPR under pressure they wilt, and that harassment led to both goals. QPR on the other hand, looked like they didn't know what they were doing, both collectively and individually. The players were slow, weak and easily pushed around. The gulf was stark.

The second half may have appeared closer but that was an illusion. Sheffield Utd had won the game convincingly by half time and they played at half pace from then on. It was very reminiscent of the Warnock Championship winning team tbh, start the game right, do the hard work, get in front, then see the game out for a perfunctory 2-0 win.

There was nothing to like about QPR today.

Some of the difference will be down to the fact that Sheff Utd have better players too. A quick look at a few of the transfer fees paid shows that.

Agree. Was a nothing performance. We offered little with or without the ball. Reminded me of games under Ainsworth. Now, we had a lot of players out injured, so not necessarily Stephan’s fault. However, he could have started JCS at left back, Mbengue at right back, and Edwards at centre half. That would have helped.

Totally agree with what we have. Worry for me is it's the defence thats gone.

It's being so happy that keeps me going.

I wondered if Mbengue only playing a half is Stephan trying to get him to the 37 game cut off without receiving a 10th yellow.

At one stage, Sheffield Utd looked so comfortable, I thought stewards were gonna roll on a few sofas and armchairs for them.

I just don't know what we were trying to do. We seemed to start with a back 3 with Saito and Bennie as number 10's but no one seemed to know where they were playing. Vale was so poor for the first goal just not tracking his man, massive gaps between the 3 centre halves and and the two midfield players. It was just rubbish. I'm not sure why Mbengue wasn't picked as the right wing back with Vale in the number 10.

Second half when we went back to 4-4-2 it was marginally better but I didn't really get Vale at left back, Sheffield United eased off so we came back into the game without ever really looking a threat.

Just poor from players and manager, basically back where we were a year ago. Promosing position wasted and now 2 months to get 4 points to ensure we stay up. Just depressing.
