The atmosphere for such a big game was utterly abysmal. Sorry, and it pains me to say it but it was terrible. Our fans at Fulham were incredible, so loud, so proud, it was brilliant and proud day for this club. But some of the St Mary's atmospheres have been so poor. So many left from about the 80th minute and I can't believe so many can go home when such an important game is in the balance. So many in the ground just sit there in silence. Are they depressed and tired like most of this nation? Miserable that they have work in the morning? Not bothered or just shy? It's just so quiet and empty.
The moving of the away fans has not helped, but the empty seats everwhere, and those who do turn up just don't seem bothered. Very disappointing. I bet there is a sell out for Arsenal at 8pm on a Saturday night. A lot of snobish fans, who turn up because it's Arsenal and a quarter final? We have some passionate fans, you see that at away games. But a big game under the lights, many don't turn up and those who do sit there in silence. What's going on? I remember some crackling atmospheres under the lights, Hoiveldt scoring the winner in a sell out crowd against West Ham in the Championship, that Friday night game against Reading in the championship that we lost but they were crackling atmospheres and sell out crowds. Why is it so quiet and empty, especially evening games? [Post edited 19 Mar 0:14]

It's very strange because the Northam were much louder today, sitting in the Kingsland singing about Eckert, they also asked him to give us a wave and he did, so Tonda could hear them. I could clearly hear the Oxford support from the other end and at times the Northam seemed loud but you can't hear them at the other end? |
No could hardly hear the Northam, but there was quite a lot of noise coming from about a hundred saints in the Chapel who sang more or less non stop, masking anything coming from the North.
As somebody said the acoustics at SMS are weird. | |

The chapel is great, doesn’t need to be forced just let it do its own thing. Noticing more and more of the old itchen north moving over which is a good thing, if it becomes a rush and you get the kids there who just want to run at the away fans the club will shut it down |  | | |

Well it's obviously not going to be heard the other end. If for large periods you can't hear thousands in the northam in the chapel you're never going to hear 30-50 people outside of the immediate area.
It doesn't need to be heard elsewhere either really, just needs to do its job of offering something different and making sure the away fans aren't surrounded by silence.
It'll be interesting to see what happens next season. Whilst it definitely needs more numbers we don't want loads of nippers from the northam who are only interested in the away fans heading over. | | | |

Personally I am quite excited by seeing how Blocks 19 to 21 the Chapel are going to evolve.
Really enjoying games in there.
That said, I am a little concerned that there may be a fair few Arsenal followers there in home areas on Saturday week. | |

I think the big thing is not to make a big deal and splash it all over social media as that'll attract people who just want to gesture at the away fans.
It's good at the moment because it's own thing and evolving naturally, also it seems to be a slightly older generation of supporter compared to the Northam which helps keep it less try hard | | | |

Yes, St Mary's has been designed to reduce noise pollution to the surrounding area. I assume sound absorbent materials were used to make sure sound doesn't carry far. If we had an old style end with a tin roof, the sound would be twice as loud.
You can only hear noise all around the stadium, when all 4 sides are singing. When our 'home end' was in the Northam/Kingsland corner, 80% of the stadium couldn't hear them at all. Even most of the away fans next to them couldn't. In fact, if you're at the Northam end of the Kingsland now, you can't hear the away fans, even though they're in the same stand. I didn't hear the Saints' fans in the Chapel sing or chant once on Saturday and I wasn't far away from them; not their fault, just the way the stadium's been designed.
The gently sloping sides at St Mary's certainly help muffle any sound. To have a noisy stadium you need to "go steep, and go high. Steep seating means your shouting goes out into the air, and not into someone’s back, making each possible output as clear and unimpeded by interference as possible." The noisiest stadium in the world is reckoned to be La Bombonera in Buenos Aires. I've been there and it is so steep that when you lean forward you feel you are going to topple down onto the pitch.
