I dont think it was Man Utd not competing one season that devalued it, it was the fact that the liks of them and other big clubs constantly put out second string teams and youngsters before putting out the big guns for semi's & finals.

With regard to the Bridges & flags, I think that was the work of those who hadn't been to Wembley so went out to welcome the fans home

I was a 9 year old and went to both with my Dad. Can remember how steep the Wembley steps felt at that time and that small.
Loved the Cup final ( probably because I have more memories from watching it back so many times ), cant remember much about the Charity Shield.
Remember much more clearly from the League Cup Final in 79 and the chant of we'll be back again in May - sadly we weren't!

I was 18 on that famous beautiful day. No one gave us a chance (like tomorrow) but we f*ucking did the cocky f*uckers.

The parade the next day was also memorable (although I can’t remember much of it as I was so pi*ssed).

Yes I was there - it was a battlefield outside afterwards. As for the Charity Shield you're right Salisbury. I remember Keegan and another player (Toshack?) actually using it as a shield as they left the pitch and were pelted by Saints fans.

I was fortunate to be there when England beat West Germany to win the World Cup in 1966 and back at Wembley 10 years later to see my team beat Man Utd in the FA Cup.
Boundless joy that day and throughout the scorching summer.
I also remember walking up Wembley Way for the Charity Shield game and seeing a message painted in the side of the Stadium in big black letters...Harefield and Thornhill welcome Weston Wa**ers!!....and wondering what that was all about.
