At close of play yesterday on both Betfair and Betfair Exchange Middlesbrough were priced at approximately 6/1 against to be promoted.
This morning on both platforms their odds have reduced to 2/1, the same as Hull’s odds.
Whilst Saints odds remain at 8/11 having drifted out from 2/5 it’s concerning that Betfair’s traditional odds makers and their spread betting clients have Middlesbrough chances equal to Hull given that currently they are not officially in the competition. |  |

Spread betting is very different from conventional betting with a bookie.
In very broad brush terms it’s people betting against each other using the internet on the outcome of a particular event. The bookies provide the platform for people to do so and take a cut of the total amount wagered. To all intents and purposes the bookies don’t have a dog in the fight.
In this instance some people are betting that Boro will be reinstated and go on to be promoted.
The likelihood of any one event occurring are quoted in decimals.
At the time of writing this and converting decimals back to fractions the odds on Boro being reinstated and going on to win are 6/1 against. The odds on Southampton staying in and winning 4/6 on. Hull are 11/5 against.
As cockle breath has posted a relatively small amount of money against the total amount wagered can alter the market substantially and very quickly. The total amount wagered on this event is relatively small at less than £300000. In events such as General Elections it’s usually multi millions thus small amounts of money wagered don’t have the same effect. [Post edited 19 May 11:56]
