| Infantino on 08:08 - Jul 30 with 6376 views | Heisenberg | Infantino has proposed, without any consultation or discussion, that 20 per cent of FIFA and future World Cups is sold of to a private equity company with direct links to Donald Trumps brother in law. It’s corruption right before our eyes. Uefa should pull out of the next World Cup. | |

| Infantino on 16:30 - Jul 30 with 6138 views | Ifonly | UEFA hold emergency meeting and threaten withdrawl from world cup: “Uefa and its national associations will not participate in Fifa competitions. Uefa and its 55 member associations stand as one. We unanimously and unequivocally reject Fifa’s proposal to transfer ownership interests in the World Cup and other Fifa competitions to private investors. " “As a result of today’s discussion, no Uefa national teams will participate in any Fifa competition for so long as these proposals remain alive, unless this proposal has been abandoned in its entirety and binding assurances have been given that Fifa will never again open its governance or competitions to private ownership." Hopefully they mean it. | | | |
| Infantino on 08:59 - Jul 31 with 5922 views | DorsetIan | I think this is all hot air. My guess is that Trump suggested the idea to Infantino during the WC (it's Trump connections involved after all) and Infantino has jumped to order because he wants to please with Trump. Pleasing Trump is what most people do. They do so in the knowledge that he has a short memory and attention span, and is never attached to any idea for too long. Infantino will be happy to drop the whole think, blaming Uefa etc. He's demonstrated his loyalty to Trump and that's the main thing. | |

He's been gobbling Trump's todger all through the WC, the snidey little slaphead. Infantino helped rescind that American striker's red card - and agreed to have a 30-minute half time 'Superbowl-style' break when it's always been 15-minutes. His right-hand man Carlos Cordeiro has just resigned this morning giving a scathing attack on Infantino in his resignation letter. Hopefully Infantino is a dead man walking now and will be gone too. FIFA raised $15 billion in revenue generated between 2022 and 2026. If Member Associations believe additional investment is needed to develop the game, FIFA already has the financial capacity to provide that support from its existing resources.

Fair play to Italy who have boycotted the World Cup for the past 12-years. That's commendable.

He'll ride it out now. He's done what Trump asked but was blocked by others. He'll be under a bit of pressure for a while but noone will challenge him formally. It's all just another nonsense Trump episode.

I see that he's Canadian. Trump won't allow that! Who are the presidents of the Russian or North Korean federations? They'll be more to his likely.

Infantino will still have support of many smaller nations, and those he cosied up to in recent years, but with Asiana,Concacaf, and UEFA coming out strongly against him, he will struggle to get re-elected. With regards to North Korea, they get 1 vote just like England, Spain etc. which is madness, and a voting system designed to make it hard to remove a FIFA president. Given Trumps links to the Kushner family (he had already pardoned the father - Charles Kushner), they wouldn't vote for anything that benefits Trump family members. Trump undoubtedly, played Infantino, and the moment we heard the Kushner family were involved, it just didn't pass the smell test. As for Trump not allowing Concacaf to vote against Infantino, it is very unlikely has that sort of influence outside of US.. He has bigger s**t to deal with, not least the US Mid terms, which could see him impeached, and the Iran war. The attempt to sell part of FIFA, was the final straw, after all all the other events that Infantino got away with without being officially unchallenged; e.g. Balogogun red card, Ronaldo, ticket prices, FIFA Peace award, negotiating without FIFA board in secret, Swiss Prosecutor and Platini case, Omar Artan - the ref expelled, hydration breaks in air-conditioned stadiums ?.... the list goes on. The sooner this slime ball quits (unlikely) or gets voted out the better. [Post edited 3 Aug 7:56]

I'm not usually in the 'they're all as bad as each other' camp (as least when it comes to politics generally). But I do wonder wether the president of a global organisation like FIFA necessarily has to be a bit of a slime-ball, simply in order to navigate all those member countries, some of which, inevitably, will be as corrupt at f*ck. I've also got no idea what a 'balanced score card' for Infantino would look like. Yes, all the Trump arse-licking and kowtowing is unedifying but in the grand scheme of things, does it really matter? The UK has rolled out the red carpet for Trump - everyone has to appease the big man baby! I don't get the impression that Infantino is personally bent like many of his predecessors, but I really don't know? But on the plus side, has he been able to widen the appeal of the game globally? Again, I have no idea??

Infantino tried to do this deal to prolong his tenure/relevance after his term ends and to line his pockets. He would have been set to receive millions, had he pulled this off. He also did it without consulting ANY football Federations or senior members in FIFA. This all despite his promises when appointed to be transparent. He is definitely as bad as some of his predecessors. This was no oversight or mistake. It was done for pure greed and power. As for whether his relationship with Trump really mattered ? I am surprised you asked. Of course it did. His Son in laws brother was an integral part of this secret deal. He also rented space in Trump tower, with all the proceeds going to Trump family business. Infantino also attended Trump's Board of Peace meeting, addressing World leaders. FIFA should be independent not trying to act as world state. He will go. It may take time, but he will be forced out. [Post edited 3 Aug 13:54]

Personally, I don't believe he had any desire to see this happen. It was all too amateurish and he could easily have predicted the response. I think he knew it was bound to fail and that's why he went along with it. That might sound ridiculous but this guy is a slippery as a slippery eel, so don't rule anything out. But I'm more interested in understanding his wider impact on World football. Does anyone know what that has been?

He didn't just go along with it. He created it and tried to ram it through. According to the Financial Times, JP Morgan and other serious parties had been working on it for over a year in secret. They wouldn't have done that if it hadn't been a serious plan. None of this has been denied by Infantino or FIFA. If he predicted the response, then why on earth did he do it? His reputation has been trashed, he may well lose his job, and if he doesn't lose his job, there are many people who will now be working against him every day until he goes. He put a lot on the line to get this through and he lost.

He did this idiotic thing because the idiot Trump asked him to. It's why a lot of mental stuff starts and then creates an unholy mess. I agree that he put a lot on the line. He gambled that sweeping up after himself would be better than refusing Trump, particularly in the run up to a World Cup. Let's see if he gets reelected. More likely than not still, would be my guess.
