Sport Republic should never have let him go in the first place.
Unlike Stewart, he would at least have been available for a whole season, and also knows where the goal is.

What I like about Ballard is that he is not just a good finisher but creates a lot of his own goals.
He'll almost certainly be one of the top scorers in the Championship, along with Wolves' . Raúl Jiménez and if he is, at £5 mill, he'll be an absolute bargain. He's only 21 and is going to be worth a lot more in the future. Will we have any striker who'll score as many goals as Ballard? We have to hope so.
No wonder Bristol City fans are excited "absolute baller and huge we've got him".

Why only in my head, if we signed a striker only proven for one season at League One level for £5 million would you feel that we were ambitious ?
Would you be asking why we weren't spending twice that, would you be asking why Middlesbrough have spent £11 m on Will Lankshear from Spurs for £11 million, that Stoke have spent more on a centre forward, ?

We signed Leo for £ 7mill last season and I don’t remember reading of effigies being burnt of the recruitment team.

Football is about opinions Dirk, but his quality is as of yet unproven, he has just last season with 23 goals for Orient, a very good tally but his previous record was not great, this time last year in 3 separate loan spells just 6 goals in 45 League games.
Funnily enough Lorent Tolaj who was runner up in the League one scoring charts got 17 in 29 League games ie .59 goals a game, slightly better than Ballards 0.58 ratio, Bristol City have also signed him for £4 million.
My point is that most Saints fan have not seen him play for Orient, they have just seen the stats, but also most I have spoken to talk about signing a striker proven at this level, something Ballard isn't.
I hope I am proved wrong about Ballard, but I am basing my judgement on that he would be a gamble at this level.

Dom Ballard also picked up player and young player of the season at the PFA awards. He scored all those goals in a terrible team. He’s joint a decent championship team so has every chance of making it.
I wouldn't sign him. He's a good player, good finisher and lively around the box, but where would we play him? We need a centre forward to make Tonda's system work and Ballard isn't a centre forward. He's a second striker and we now have a long history of trying to get second strikers to play as centre forward - and failing every time. We could maybe play him instead of a no.10 but we have Azaz, Dobbin and maybe Matsuki in that role, do we want another one? We need to take every penny of transfer funds we have and land a centre forward.
One thing that a centre forward gives us is the ability to defend set pieces. We still have a small team and without a proper centre forward on the pitch we may be forced to go back to playing 3 CBs, which disrupts everything else.
Good luck to Ballard, he's a good player, but he's not what we need.
