Do We Need Another Forward on 08:45 - Aug 12 by Butty101
No square pegs never work, we need another big bruising centre forward
We have two bruising centre forwards in Larin & Mubama, it is having a contrasting 3rd striker as Archer was last season that we would need and from that respect Dobbin can play that role.

Archer never succeeded in that role. His last attempt was away at Leicester and we were 3-0 down at half time before he was subbed off. Same with Diaz and Downs. Same with Arma. Same would be true with Dobbin.
Tonda says he wants Dobbin to play "anywhere behind the striker". In other words, not as a striker. He's obviously not a centre forward, so let's not play him as one.

The second smaller striker ala Archer & Armstrong etc is not the way that Eckert likes of play, he has one up top with two wide men and a number 10 deeper behind the striker.
However sometimes he has to go off plan and go for it with two up top or a different style and that is where Archer came in last season, as at Birmingham, 68th minute sub and 71st minute equaliser, Swansea away 88th min sub injury time winner with two up top.
This is where Dobbin comes in he can play number 10, out wide or as a centre forward, he offers options.
So from this perspective we can get away with Larin & Mubama rotating up top and with Dobbin coming in to fill in as an emergency striker as he did with Preston at times last year.
The problem we would have is that any potential striker we would look to sign, would see that he would struggle for game time with Larin & Mubama vying for the one available striking role, he would be 3rd choice at best

Yes, I agree that Dobbin can play as a second striker, but to do that you need a first striker i.e. a centre forward on the pitch. So, Dobbin is not an option to replace the centre forward, he's only an option to play in addition to the centre forward. So, we still have the problem of only having 2 centre forwards.
This is a problem with the number of games we have to play. If if we don't get knocks, they get tired playing that number of games. Neither Larin or Mubama have ever played the number of games we're likely to have to play. If one gets an injury we've got a serious problem. Also, because he's young and inexperienced, Mubama is likely to be inconsistent. It would be a bad idea to put the pressure on him when he's struggling.
If we have 3, they'll still get enough game time. For much of the season we're playing twice a week, so even if all 3 were fully fit, they could all get 60 mins a week if time was shared equally. The reality is that one will be out of form, or need rest and the other 2 will get more time. Last season we saw the benefits of keeping them fresh.
To me, we can't afford to take the risk of going into the season with only 2 for such a crucial position. Last season we were great in every game we had a centre forward on the pitch and rubbish in almost every game we didn't have one. If we don't get promoted this season that will have severe implications for the club's future. We have the money now, so let's use it while we still can.

I wouldnt want to see Larin being roatated for Mubama. We need more experience than Mubama. Archer, needs a fresh start somewhere else and Dobbin isnt a forward. Dobbin wasnt great the other day in the number 10 role. I know early days........

With all due respect Nick, how do you know that Dobbin can plays many different roles or positions. I've personally have seen very little of him & I can't imagine that you have seen too much of him. It is total guess work at the .moment, we are working on the basis that Tonda etc have studied him & believe that he can do various jobs up front for us. But history tells us that what we call utility players are far less effective than players that specialise playing a certain role. I certainly wasn't impressed by Dobbin playing against Colchester, I think he will become a fringe player.

We have to hope that the loan player is up to scratch, otherwise we just have Larin. He might be up to scratch, it's just more uncertain. Vipotnik we know 99 per cent he would be up to scratch straight away. If Larin gets injured, the new loan player will be on his own and as I said, hopefully he is ready to be our main striker in that situation. We can't play small.players up front with the way we play. Playing a big man up front was one.of the first things Tonda did, when he took over and what a difference it made.

I quite like Mark Harris at Oxford, a bit of an old school No. 9.
He scored a lot of goals for Oxford when they went up from League 1.
I am sure he would be open to a move to us, even if he wasn't our first pick.
One of my closest friends of all time is a die hard pompey fan and that is his name. Him signing for us would be beautiful and I would rejoice in it every day for the sheer pain it would cause. Now I am imagining him getting the winner for us at the Fratton End

Personally I love to see a target man up front, a Peter Crouch, Ross Stewart type player. Good in the air, good with the ball at their feet, unplayable, finds space, holds the ball up well and intelligent.
How often does this type of player become available? Huge loss that we may regret imo.

I wonder if we went for him before Mubama.
I thought probably not - the reports says that last week he turned down the Russians, now Saints, in that order. Saints agreed Mubama early last week, so the timing suggests this happened afterward Mubama was agreed.
Of course, I could be leaning towards what I hope to be true!
