I dont think Tankard can be counted he only played 5 League games in total and as one of them was in a 6-1 defeat at Everton when with Shilton & Kite injured we had to play youth team keeper Keith Grainger in goal it would be unfair to judge him on that one.
He couldnt have been that bad, after leaving Saints he played 209 games in what was the old Third Division and then helped Port Vale to promotion from the 3rd tier then playing 249 games for them in what was now the First Division (Now Championship)
In 2001/02 he helped Mansfield to promotion to the 2nd division but didn't play any games due to injury
After leaving Southampton he played 514 League games, nearly 300 in the 2nd tier of English football.
So a bit harsh on judging a youngster who was still 16 when he made his first two appearances for the club and only just 17 when he made the final two | |

An unpopular opinion but I never rated Frannie, a saving grace was when he ironed out John Fashanu in about 1990 at Plough Lane, not sure if he's come back come back down to earth yet from that challenge [Post edited 7 Sep 17:01]

Benali was alright until you gave him the ball, at which point those in the West and East Stands needed to duck for cover.

My Uncle Fred who took me to The Dell nicknamed him 'Gentleman Joe' in the way he approached the attacking winger, and then gave way, gestured his arm to one side and said 'After You' to allow his opponent the freedom of the by line!! I would argue the opposite of the Allen Tankard point and say that Benali should be disqualified on grounds of longevity.
He can’t have been that bad as he played hundreds of games under a succession of Saints managers and was as fit as a flea.
He couldn’t pass to save his life and was much maligned for that but he did used to shit up the opposition a bit so there’s that.
Also, he’s raised a fortune for charity and had a great moustache.
